Hi AkarshS,

Thank you for your post and for sharing your profile. And congratulations on a 750 GMAT score! Quantitatively speaking, you have a great background. However, the qualitative measures of the application need to match, and perhaps even supersede, the quantitative. As you prepare your application, focus on telling your story - where you have come from, why an MBA, and why do you require an MBA from these particular institutions. Do not overestimate the importance of story-telling, and each application and each school will have its own criteria and modes of assessing your candidacy. Assuming you are targetting R1 if you haven't started already, begin working on your applications immediately, so you give yourself ample time to prepare and submit an application that is fitting of your background.

If you would like to continue the conversation, please feel free to reach out and schedule a free consultation (contact details in signature).

Good luck!

Hello rhnbansal

Harvard is going to evaluate your profile on admission factors mentioned here.
If we dissect your profile this is what we get-
Past scores and GMAT check the box.
Would help to understand your achievements at work and whether you are currently doing a job. More than years/industry/role what will matter here is your story, career progress and content of your work ex.
Extracurricular also look solid, showcase the real stories and impact in all these activities.
Not very convinced with the career goals though- since you have already worked in the finance field and have been an entrepreneur too, why an MBA, that too in the US/Harvard. The goals will have to be a bit more specific here and the MBA must tie in with your long term vision of your career. You could add to hour research by reading here
Needless to say execution of essays is of paramount importance in your specific case (to show the jump from job to entrepreneurship to present situation to MBA).
Should you have further questions, let me know.

Re: Harvard Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hello! First off, thank you to the people here who are helping others get where they want to be!

I would appreciate it if you could evaluate my profile -

1) Indian, Male, 27.
2) Graduated with an Bachelor's degree in technology from one of the 7 older IITs (GPA 7.2/10)
3) GMAT - 750 (Q49, V42)

Career so far -

Worked as a software engineer at a blue-chip software firm for a year and a half. During my time there, I was introduced to the wonderful field of product design. I realised that programming wasn't what I wanted to do, and that while I was passionate about technology (and still am!), designing software products seemed far more interesting to me. Took a leap of faith and started a design agency, that specialises in Product Design (UX/UI Design for Web and Mobile Products) and Graphic Design. We've grown well over the last three and a half years. I lead a team of 17 people. We've worked on designing interesting products (and other projects) in fields such as e-commerce, travel, fitness, finance, robotics, productivity, and we've even built apps for really young kids (this was a unique challenge). Designed lots of other stuff as well. For example, we are the go-to company for a lot of global messaging apps for designing content (emoticons :D) specific to India. Some of our clients include - Facebook, Microsoft, Blackberry, The People Group (a large Indian Internet conglomerate), Flipkart (India's largest e-commerce company), Airtel (India's largest and the world's third largest telecom company). I've been fortunate to have got the chance to develop a fairly global outlook towards design - we've designed for users in Japan, the USA and several other countries.

Extracurriculars -

During my undergrad, I was the head of the placement committee for my batch, and my team (20) and I worked for a good year and half together, inviting companies for recruitment and organising all recruitment related activities on campus.

Was the head of the organising committee for the entrepreneurship summit at our college.

Was part of the core organising team for our college's technology summit.

I am avid runner (have run a few half marathons), and of late, have been learning Mixed Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Why an MBA and what after that?

Over the last year or so, I have increasingly felt that I want to move out of the services/consulting sector. As a services firm, you have little control over the kind of projects you take up, especially in a market which is very competitive. I've always been in awe of the tech sector and product companies in the USA. A top-tier MBA seems to be my best bet in landing myself a product management role at firms working on interesting technology products. I am keen on being on the East Coast - the hub of all activity for two domains I am particularly interested in - financial technology and blockchain (and it's applications) This is my short term goal. In the long term, (probably in the next 7-8 years), I want to start a product firm of my own. Designing products has taught me the value of understanding who you're building for, and what best serves their needs. If you're building a product for a global audience, you need a very global outlook. This is what I'm primarily looking for out of an MBA - being with, and learning from people from diverse backgrounds, and who probably have very unique, interesting experiences to share. I believe, being with very driven and very ambitious folks might lead to very exciting outcomes. Who knows? Maybe I'll find the future co-founders of my firm. I am also very keen on building on my own business experience, through an MBA's rigorous academic curriculum.

At this point, I do not intend to take up a role in consulting or investment banking, post the MBA (I've had enough meetings - wooing or presenting to clients, for one lifetime :))

Hello daljeet6586

You have an interesting and unique profile! I have seen and worked with a few MBBS doctors applying to Top b-schools but rarely do we come across someone from Ayurvedic medicine background. While this differentiation could be your asset, it might also become a challenge- in convincing HBS (and other top schools) about how the MBA is a good next step for you and why they should admit you.

To give you better feedback on your profile- I'd like to know your career goals and why you are considering an MBA.

Let's talk more. Feel free to email me directly at mail@vibranture.com, or connect with me on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/shea-rai-vibranture/

I'd also suggesting reading an article I wrote sometime back:

Good luck!

Hello ABBBCCCCC

The contours of your profile look good- acads, GMAT, extracurricular.
However, you will need to bring out quality details on two questions-
1. What has been your contribution and impact in these internships (and on a side note in the extracurricular too).
2. You wish to work in consulting, but why now? Why early MBA? You can follow that path by first working and then applying for an MBA in a few years and reaching the same goal. Establish a compelling need for an early MBA- not evident from your post. Why Harvard is equally important, as any good B school can land you there.
If you can showcase strong answers to these 2, you may have a chance. You can read here to know which factors to highlight in the application.

Hello alexguo0714

Definitely go for a re-attempt if you are targeting Harvard. Aim for a 740+ if possible.
In addition, more than just your role, achievements and progress at work will matter. Same goes for extracurricular- bring out your impact and contribution in these activities.
Lastly, be more specific about career goals- general management in what industry. How do you tie this goal to your past experience? What missing gaps will an MBA from Harvard fill?
The whole deal is supposed to be highly subjective- you can read more on that here to help you prepare a strong application.

Hi alexguo0714,

Thank you for your post and for sharing your profile. Providing additional details will make it easier for us to better evaluate your profile. Here are some questions: What is your academic background (field of study)? You indicate that you have a graduate degree. Is this a master's? If so, in what field?

While you have worked for global companies, what roles have you held? How have you demonstrated leadership?

As to your post-MBA goals, the question has already been asked - what sector are you looking to work in? Why do you need an MBA? Why now? And why from Harvard?

You have great academic performance, but indeed a boost in your GMAT would improve your chances at Harvard. However, keep in mind that Harvard's admissions approach is wholistic - they look for well-rounded candidates that can add value to the classroom. In other words, the qualitative component is equally important to the quantitative.

If you would like to continue the conversation, please reach out for a free 30-minute evaluation (contact details in signature).

Good luck!

As a longtime reader and one-time user of this odds thread on GMAT Club, I've been impressed by the generosity and thoughtfulness here. For some people, these evaluations have given them the courage to apply when they might otherwise not. For others, the answers they get here might discourage them. The truth of the matter though is that there are a lot of problems with many "Odds Threads", specifically the simple threads that essentialize candidates to the criteria below, and after reading and writing them for so long, I would be remiss if I didn't share the following:

The Problem with Many "Odds Threads"

Countless MBA blogs (including this one) allow applicants to post their admissions profile for others to evaluate their chances of admission at different MBA programs. Usually the criteria asked for will be rather simple and reductivist like the following:
  • GPA
  • Undergraduate Institution
  • GMAT Score

Of course, this is done for simplicity's sake, but reducing an applicant to the criteria above creates its own problems. Specifically, these “odds threads” fundamentally misunderstand and conflate several key parts of the admissions process. The users of these threads should be aware of the following limitations and take heed accordingly.

Problem 1: Many confuse checkboxes for sliding scales.

The trouble is that these forums breed the belief that the more “extra” someone is in each of these categories, the better chance they have at admission. Someone with a 4.0 GPA must have a higher probability than someone with a 3.8 and 790 better odds than a 750, right? Not quite. This is because applications are evaluated in a two-step process.

The first step is the sorting. The first four criteria in the list above are “check box” data fields. The admissions committee looks at these criteria first to run an initial screening of the candidate pool. The goal from this initial screening is to sort candidates as “highly competitive”, “competitive”, or “not competitive” for admission at that particular school.

A highly competitive applicant will have a GPA and GMAT that is at or above the business school’s overall average, earned a degree from a school well represented from among the student body, and worked at a firm that either places well at the school or (ideally) recruits a lot of MBAs from that institution to return. A competitive candidate will have most of those criteria. An uncompetitive will have few or none. Once this sorting is done, the top category is fast-tracked, and middle is evaluated, and the bottom is dropped.

The second step in the process brings us to Problem 2

Problem 2: Most ignore the key selection criteria of Narrative

Since there are far, far more “competitive” candidates than a school has spots to give in a class, the admissions committee needs a second screening to further winnow the class down. This second step evaluates a candidate’s Narrative. Admissions committees want to admit students who have great personal stories, who are going to make the most of their spots in the MBA class to accelerate their career trajectories, and who will change the world for the better. Once you make it through the first screen, regardless of GPA or GMAT, the best story wins.

Put another way, passing the “checkbox” criteria mentioned in Problem 1 will get the admissions committee to listen to you. The narrative is how to convince them. If your narrative lacks focus, clarity, simplicity, credibility, specificity, emotion, logic, and values, even an 800 GMAT score will help you – you will be denied.

You’ll notice that our MBA Odds Form asks for something not included on the list I pulled from the blogs above: personal narrative. Your personal narrative is the single most important factor for determining whether you will be admitted to an MBA program, offers the single biggest return on your time investment, and is the only part of your application that you control 100%.

In short, if you were to plot out the probabilities on each of these checkbox criteria, you would not see a smooth upward sloping line, but rather a step-function as candidates are first sorted, then evaluated individually on their narrative story, the quality of which has a more random distribution.

Problem 3: Many (sometimes even here) focus on the wrong things

Remember your college application? Remember how you talked all about your community involvements and extracurricular activities? That silly essay about your love of track & field and how it's a metaphor for your leadership style? Many people who submit profiles for evaluation devote as much real estate to their hobbies as their actual work experience. This is a huge miscalculation because while business schools care a great deal about your work experience, they care almost nothing about your hobbies. Here’s why.

First, strategically, whereas the admissions criteria for college (and law school for that matter) are retrospective (i.e. they ask what have you done to “earn” or “deserve” a spot in the class), business school admission criteria is prospective (e.g. what will you do with this opportunity?). This is because an MBA is an entirely elective degree. Whereas you need a JD to practice law, no one needs an MBA to practice business. Therefore, any good application needs to explain what the candidate will do with the degree on their professional journey, and even insinuate what negative consequences will befall them if they don’t obtain it. The answer to this question lies in work experience and narrative, not in your free-time hobbies.

Second, tactically, extracurriculars are just not as valuable to business schools. Colleges (especially elite colleges) really value the community experience and look for students to take leadership in this important area. That’s why they give steep scholarships to athletes, and little admissions boosts students who will round out difficult-to-fill community positions (such as oboe players in the orchestra). Talking about your extracurricular activities on your college essay made sense because you had something of value to offer to the school. In contrast, the whole point of business school is to secure an internship and later a full-time job offer. Almost all extracurricular activities in business school exist to advance that goal. For example, the finance club meetings will either be to network with prospective banks or to tutor students on building models in excel. Playing the oboe at business school gives you a lot of money in a worthless currency.

In your MBA application, your work experience is king. Give it the real estate it deserves.

That's just my thoughts. Look to get your odds evaluated from people and in places where these problems are corrected.

Thanks for taking the time to review!

I originally was not planning on HBS, I had identified Michigan, Darden and Cornell as my schools but after a free call with an admissions consultant they asked why I wasn't applying to Harvard, MIT and Kellogg. I pretty much laughed. I had a low undergrad GPA so didn't think I had a chance, but they seemed serious. Was hoping to get another point of feedback from folks on here. My feelings won't get hurt since I wasn't planning on applying originally anyway if you feel I'm not a good candidate.

Age: 27 Male (US Citizen)

Undergrad: Double Major B.S. Mechanical Engineering, B.S. Biomedical Engineering at state school

GPA: 2.7 Started well, poor middle section, ended well. No personal tragedy or anything I was just in the mindset of getting through it and spread myself across a ton of other things.

GRE: 168V 166Q first attempt, think I could bump up quant if I decided to take again. I think that corresponds to 760 GMAT on charts but I know it's not really directly relatable...

Work: About to hit 3 years, 4 upon matriculation. Went from associate product development engineer for top medical device company focusing on implant hardware design to managing a program of 10 people responsible for executing the integration of hardware and software on all new project releases. Work as a liaison across the hardware and software business divisions where I regularly meet with project teams, engineers and senior management. Get to work with and still do engineering design with some of the top surgeons in the field. Do a lot of philanthropy with the company and have been a part of a number of successful side initiatives. My favorite one was an MBA style project I lead in a company wide innovation competition to pitch an idea to help mitigate trauma pathologies in an emerging market, ended up winning 1st place and a few awards. Subsequent year I helped to facilitate 4 other teams through the competition. Have gotten a few work and professional certifications.

Extra curriculars: I logged about 1000+ hours of volunteering during last few years of undergrad and won outstanding service award, also worked in a research lab for 3 years and captained a club sports team for a few years among a number of other things. I currently volunteer with my dog as a therapy dog team at local hospitals/nursing homes, do philanthropy with my company, am involved in a fundraiser for a program taking inner city kids outdoors that I've been involved with since college and some other small things including being on a few boards at work. Have also been a part of some leadership programs, one was a year long where I was paired with a CEO of a major medical device company that was really fun to be a part of!

Goal: I really loved that MBA style project I did and have strong interest in medical device design for emerging markets and leading a global healthcare company in product development. My current role of working across divisions with senior management and leadership made me realize I could really benefit from a better financial background. I am targeting programs that have a dual degree in systems or design engineering.

Recommenders: I have 3-5 folks who I think would give me a very strong recommendation. My current boss saw the work I was doing and created an entirely new role for me managing a cross-division program, and one of the senior engineering managers I work with daily is one of the most well respected in the division and is an adjunct professor at a top school. Still choosing between others.

Overall I'm excited but worried the low college gpa will hamstring me. I am considering taking a high level math class but haven't had time yet with GRE.

I would really appreciate any feedback and thoughts on whether I'd be a good candidate for better programs, I was thinking top 20 but wondering if I'd have a shot at programs like MMM, LGO or Harvard's MBA/MS. Thanks! :-)

VCU will not be seen as an elite undergrad school but you did perform well so this will be seen as a positive aspect of your profile. If there was any doubt of your aptitude from your academic record your strong GMAT performance will put that to rest.

Hi Loanme,

Thank you for your post and for sharing your profile. You, indeed, have an impressive background and involvements. While you do have a low GPA, your GRE score counterbalances that, and your activities speak of someone that has a great deal to offer to the classroom and the world (post graduation). Based on your description, you seem to have strong leadership experience and great potential, corroborated by the role your boss created specifically for you. I agree with the consultant, you should apply to top programs as well. I recommend you address your undergraduate record in the optional essay. At this stage, focus on the things you can control, delivering a stellar essay and optional essay as well as request LOR from supervisors that can talk about your strengths and potential.

I am happy to continue the conversation. If interested, please reach out to coordinate a free consultation (contact details in signature).

Good luck!
