1) I will be applying to a deferred MBA program. Given the lack of "big names" under my internship experience and lack of experience in the waste management sector (which is my post-mba vision), do I have a shot at HBS 2+2?

2) What can I work on to improve my deferred MBA application, given that I still have 4-5 months left?

Hi 9nishtha,

Your profile is "excellent". A very strong profile from a bit diverse background (as opposed to common Indian male engineer). Your achievements are amazing especially the one at the World Water Race but I must say each and every achievement says something about your personality and capabilities. Your stats are great (8.9 is quite good) and if you get your targeted GMAT, it's an icing on the cake. Your leadership experiences are mature, believe me, there are people with more than 5 years of experience but still not having the kind of leadership experience that you have now at this early stage of your career. Your goals of going in social impact industry totally make sense for me and if you can bring the right motivations of pursuing waste management sector, you are sorted. Because this, too, makes sense since you have been involved in a plethora of social impact projects and there must have been some motivation for you to reach this goal. And yes, people will tell you that the "big names" matter in your application, but believe me, they do not. Your experience and maturity speak for you and so, do not worry over this. So, overall I feel you are a total package and you definitely have demonstrated your potential but still, do not be over-confident over this. You still need to frame the right story (and that's where even the most stellar candidates fail). So, remember your presentation of your application matters the most and do not take it lightly. If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you to discuss your profile at length and try to address any of your hiccups and guide you for the right story. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

During his own application journey, he found the paucity of two things in the industry: TIME and PERSONAL CONNECTION both of which are very important between a consultant and an applicant to get a stellar application and so, Shantanu started coaching applicants, with his team, right after he graduated from INSEAD in 2017. Have a look at the unique process he follows to lead the unconventional candidates getting into their dream schools

Hi all, I am planning to apply to several deferred MBA programs. HBS 2+2 is the primary along with Wharton.
Would love to have some opinions on my profile and chances of getting in.

Indian Male Engineering background candidate.
Academics are:
780 GMAT(Q50,V47)
8.3/10(USA 4.00 equivalent) GPA in Information Technology from a Top10 Indian University
Consistently among Top 10 percentile throughout academic career. (Mostly 99%tile)

Work experience includes:
Currently working(Aug, 2020 - Present) at one of the country's leading E-commerce startup(considered among the FAANGs of India) on a high impact project affecting millions of customers and has lots of cross-functional interaction.
Summer Internship at world's leading travel firm(goes by Expe***) during 2019. There too I developed a service(sole developer) that affected 200000+ customers and brought $3.7Mn+ in revenues yearly.
Another summer Internship at a data analytics startup(not so famous) during 2017. Worked multiple roles to be honest.

I had a pretty good record during the 2019 internship as I was the only intern among 110 to do such kind of project and make it live. Plus I also worked on another high dollar impact project. Whole team is ready to recommend me (Including my manager, who is now at Director level).

Extracurriculars/Volunteer Work :
1) Involved for the past few years with an NGO providing education to underprivileged kids in the city.
2) Undertook a project to open bank accounts of hundreds of underprivileged kids to facilitate direct transfer of cash grants from Govt. to their accounts(the grants were to underprivileged kids for their books and nutrition). Earlier they had to collect cash from local office which caused delays and inconvenience. These accounts led to timely transfers and they no longer had to wait.
3) Members of the toastmasters club.
4) Involved in college festival planning.

Short Term Goal:
Work in tech investment division an Investment Bank or VC firm to gain experience in startup valuations/financing, M&A, valuation and corporate finance. I can use my tech background here.

Long Term Goal:
Work at a VC firm and focus on investments in the EdTech sector.

I am wondering are there any gaps or flags in my profile and what my chances would be at any of the mentioned schools.

Hi AdiBir,

Your profile looks great. Starting with stats, your GMAT is outstanding and your undergrad GPA is quite great as well done from a great institution. So, academically, there is no doubt of your potential.

Now, about your work-ex, it is amazing as well. You clearly have a very big impact on all the organizations you have been part of and you have worked in multiple roles as well, so this should develop your understanding of different functions in an organization. And you have great recommendations as well. Also, you have exhibited great community involvement. So, overall I do not see any red flags here but yes, one very small thing that I would mention is leadership experiences. From the details you have provided, I am not able to see any major leadership roles you undertook and it's okay if you do not have it professionally. You can mention some experiences where you have mentored someone or taught someone. The only point is Harvard is very particular about seeing a leader in you and you should not miss mentioning this trait in you.

So, overall, it's a well-rounded profile and you are an achiever, definitely. Best of luck for your applications! If you'd like, we are happy to discuss your profile at length and will try to address your hiccups. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Work at a VC firm and focus on investments in the EdTech sector.

I am wondering are there any gaps or flags in my profile and what my chances would be at any of the mentioned schools.

MBAnBevaluations Hi Kashish, Thanks for a great analysis.
I needed to add one more point regarding the leadership issue you raised.
I was the lead for the project to open the bank accounts of underserved kids. It was partly my idea and mostly my execution. I coordinated with the bank staff, organised visits etc. Will this count as a leadership experience?
One thing I forgot to add was I provide 1-1 English language lessons to kids every week. This is a company led initiative but I volunteered.
And during my internship, I was the lead coordinator in a team of 3 interns, I didn't mention this. This project was completed ahead of time and offered significant improvements.
So in your opinion, will these experiences count? Considering I am a 2+2 applicant so don't have much in terms of full time experience.

Definitely bud, these do count and rather are great. These experiences not just show a good leader in you but also an empathic personality and an initiator. Also, there is another piece of advice from me. You will face a big competition considering your background in terms of work-ex, achievements, acads etc and so it becomes all the more difficult for you to bring a unique story. Do a lot of brainstorming in terms of how YOU are different from the pool and deserve that seat of Harvard and will be able to contribute UNIQUELY to the community. Again, if you need any guidance over you profile, feel free to reach out. Happy to help you! :)

All the very best!

Cheers!

Hi all,

I'm planning to apply to the HBS 2+2 program and wanted to have a profile evaluation. Here's my profile -
Demographic - Female, International student in the UK (University of Manchester)
Current GPA - 4.0
GMAT - Haven't taken yet but target is 750

Internships and extras
* Business intern
* Year long internship at one of the Virgin Group companies
* Started a pro-bono marketing agency on campus

Thank you so much for your evaluation. :)

It's obviously not enough to go on because your actual MBA application is so much more detailed than this! Also, GMAT is so critically important for 2+2s that a 'chances' for you is premature. If you get a 750 you have a shot, but nothing is guaranteed. There are tons of 750+ candidates out there and many still get denied. But if 2+2 doesn't work out, don't be discouraged! 2+2 is a very small part of the overall class, lots of more chances to get admitted once you have more experience :)

Very impressive background. Congrats on all the success to date. On paper, I think you should have a puncher's chance at many of those top deferred programs. There are two critical pieces remaining:

(1) GMAT score: You noted that you are taking it November 2020, so is that score in yet? If so, what did you get? That's a huge factor for these deferred programs which tend to rely on academic pedigree and scores compared to work experience for older, traditional candidates.

(2) Why do you want an MBA? If you have all this finance and investment analysis training and experience, how does an MBA make complete sense? The argument would actually be that you're lacking full-time work experience and could benefit tremendously from non-internship/part-time roles.

In any event, at Admissionado we work with many college students applying for their MBAs and would be happy to assist you. We also offer a Advanced Planning Program package that pairs a senior consultant, such as myself, with a candidate, such as yourself, on a mentorship basis. We would work together until you are ready to apply.

If you are interested in a more detailed assessment of your background and how we can help you get into these top schools, please reach out for a free consultation.

Hey AdiBir,

You have a pretty great profile,

Academically, you have a great GPA, which showcases your academic prowess and the brand of your undergraduate college is equally impressive. As for your GMAT, an overall score of 780 is outstanding and would bolster the AdComs confidence in your academic abilities and improve your acceptance chances. You can further boost this aspect of your profile by highlighting the academic projects you took up or any technical internships done during your undergraduate.

As far as your internship and work experience goes, you have pretty great projects and quantifiable impacts that would act as differentiators, hence you ought to explain and highlight the major projects of your work and how these experiences helped to develop and further groom your skills and knowledge. Highlight why you chose these firms, how you have gone beyond the role, the initiatives you took, and the kinds of impact created to establish a connection with your goals and portray the knowledge gained from these experiences. Properly highlighting this would allow you to stand at par with candidates with more extensive work experience hailing from the big 4 brands.

Talking about the extracurriculars, while you have a great balance of volunteering and other experiences, I see a lack of leadership roles in these initiatives. Since B-schools are looking for quantifiable achievements more than participation hence, you could be building upon this aspect by spearheading events. Furthermore, you could take up certifications like CFA or FRM to showcase your drive to achieve your goals.

Since you have made no mention of any international experiences I would like to inform you that for the deferred MBA programs International experiences matter as well as they showcase your broadened perspective and adaptability. You could be building upon this by either taking up trips and exchange programs or by focusing on the kind of international clients you have worked with and how it has added value to your experiences.

Coming on to your school choices, While you have a great profile, both the Wharton and HBS Deferred MBA program fall under the dream category, thus, your chances of acceptance for the program would be 40-50%.

To summarize, the Deferred MBA program is one of the most competitive programs and AdComs only tend to pick out candidates with outstanding profiles. Hence, you would need to prepare a very strong application in order to differentiate yourself and enhance your chances of getting accepted into your target schools. You would need to highlight your profile USP’s and how you can be a great addition to the school whilst posing the right examples to legitimize your claim. Additionally, you need to ensure that your LORs and Resume, equally depict the strengths of your profile since your application( SOP, ESSAY, LOR & RESUME ) will hold a 30% value in the selection procedure.

That said, if you are looking to target these top B-schools and want to prepare a strong application, you can check our comprehensive all in one solution that has helped thousands of applicants get into their dream schools including schools like Wharton, Stanford, and LBS!

Questions:

1) I will be applying to a deferred MBA program. Given the lack of "big names" under my internship experience and lack of experience in the waste management sector (which is my post-mba vision), do I have a shot at HBS 2+2?

2) What can I work on to improve my deferred MBA application, given that I still have 4-5 months left?

Thanks!

Hey 9nishtha,

You have a pretty competitive and holistically developed profile.

To commence your profile evaluation, I would say that your academic background is quite strong. Your GPA of 8.9 in a relevant program such as Business administration and commerce not only displays your academic prowess but also opens a lot of opportunities and doors to top business schools for you. The brand name of SRCC is the further cherry on top and aids in strengthening your profile.

Moving on, you have several international experiences in your profile where you not only have participated in events but also took charge and won accolades. All of these experiences not only highlight your broadened perspectives and horizons but also goes on to authenticate your strong business acumen and academic skills. More importantly, the international experience would aid in lifting your profile higher as b-schools look for such experiences in applicants.

I am also delighted to see that you have undertaken such vast and varied activities and positions of responsibilities. Being part of ENACTUS highlights your strong leadership skills and the ability to utilize theoretical knowledge in real life situations, your work for P-TAL showcases your incredible business acumen while the social entrepreneurship programme displays your strong communication skills and the intent to create a positive impact on the society.

Apart from this, you have undertaken several CSR activities and volunteering activities as well. These experiences highlight your ability to create a positive impact on your society through your exemplary leadership and skills and shows that you are an empathetic leader.

Coming on to your work experience, while pretty extensive, there is one major factor that is missing throughout your profile - big brand names. The brand name definitely plays a major role in an application as you’d be competing with applicants from the top schools and big4 companies. To negate the lack of big brand names, talking about the kind of projects you have undertaken, the impact you created and your career progression with major learning takeaways would definitely showcase the quality of your work and establish you as no less than a big4 candidate.

Moreover, as your extracurricular activities are quite impactful, you can utilize those experiences and craft a strong application that justifies the lack of any substantial work experience. Another avenue that you can explore to improve your profile is to get an internship at a Big4 company, preferably in the field you wish to make a career in. As you still have 4-5 months to your application, you’d definitely be able to gain some quality experience.

Coming on to the GMAT, as you are applying for a deferred MBA program, you’d need to score at least a 740 in your GMAT due to the program’s highly stringent acceptance criterias.

Given your profile, you definitely stand eligible to shoot your aim at HBS 2+2 deferred MBA program. However, since deferred MBA admissions are generally highly competitive, your chances of acceptance would be around 40-50%. Thus, when applying to B schools it is a better strategy to hedge your bets wisely and apply to a mixed bunch of schools. Hence, you should also consider targeting schools such as Stanford, Yale, Chicago Booth, Columbia University and University of Virginia etc.

Another important aspect that I should draw your attention towards is the importance of a strong application. Since you are applying to a deferred MBA program which has incredibly stringent acceptance rates, it is important for you to craft a strong application that highlights your strengths and gives apt justifications for your weaknesses to smooth over any flaws in your profile. Moreover, a strong application sets you apart from the rest of the competition by successfully highlighting not only your calibre but also your potential to add value to the school.

Since it seems like you are still in the early stages of your application, you must be looking for some professional help to guide you through the application process of top business schools in the world. Hence, I’d suggest you to book a free consultation call with our expert consultants who would clear any doubts you may have regarding the admission process and would help you chalk out a winning strategy that would definitely get you an admit in your dream school.

* Business intern google
* Year long internship at one of the Virgin Group companies
* Started a pro-bono marketing agency on campus

Thank you so much for your evaluation. :)

Hi there,

First and foremost, as you intend on applying for a deferred MBA program, you ought to take into consideration that this program is one of the most competitive programs and requires an all-rounder profile. Having said that, your overall profile seems quite impressive. Your GPA of 4.0 definitely showcases your academic prowess while your target GMAT score of 750 is exactly what you should be aiming for since the higher the score, the higher are the chances of your acceptance. Additionally, you also have a good college brand that is the University of Manchester under your belt which further enhances your profile as schools tend to pick out applicants from top schools of every country.

Further, on the note of extracurriculars, you must be cognizant of the fact that schools seek applicants having a holistic profile, and unfortunately, you have not mentioned many details about this. However, to give you a brief idea of how to go about this, you can elaborate on the clubs and associations you were involved in, the teams you led, certifications you undertook, and most importantly your volunteering activities along with NGOs. Here you can further talk about the kind of events you organized, duties you performed, and most importantly highlight what were your major takeaways. All in all, varied skills can contribute towards you being a great future leader which would automatically impress the adcoms.

When it comes to your work experience, you have interned at Google, a Virgin Group company and you also had entrepreneurial initiatives under your credit in the form of a pro bono marketing agency that you had started on your college campus. All these experiences are definitely praiseworthy but to further amplify your profile and to set yourself at par with your competitors, you ought to shed light on why you chose these companies, what kind of projects you undertook, impacts created, and the skills you’ve developed. This will also showcase how you are chalking out a path towards your goal while portraying your dedication and consistency.

All in all, your profile looks pretty good, however, an accurate evaluation can be presented through insights into every aspect of your profile, especially taking into consideration the fact that you are targeting one of the most coveted schools and programs. On this note, I’d suggest you drop in missing details of your profile such as your extracurricular activities and details of your work experience on our mail address info@mim-essay.com so I could present you with apt suggestions.

Alternatively, you can also Book a Free consulting session with one of our consultants for a more personalized profile evaluation, who will help you plan a winning strategy to overcome the particular weaknesses in your profile and highlight your strengths through tried and tested methods that have helped over hundreds of similar applicants win an admit from top-ranked B-schools worldwide!

Hi everybody! Very new to this forum so sorry if I'm doing something wrong here. I'm a senior looking to apply to HBS 2+2, as well as the deferred enrollment programs at GSB and Wharton. Here's some basic info about me - please let me know if I'm missing anything!

Undergrad school: H/Y/P
Undergrad major: Political Science
Undergrad minors: Statistics, Music
Extracurriculars: Singing group (Music Director), Music youth outreach program (Instructor)

GPA: ~ 3.6 (3.58) - consistent and strong upward trend
GMAT: 770 (49 Q, 47 V, 6/6 AWA, 8/8 IR)

Age: 22
Sex: M
Race: East Asian

2020 Internship: Strategy consulting and data analytics at F500 company (for external clients, not internal consulting) - returning to work FT after completing undergrad
2019 Internship: Engineering analyst at government energy agency

Post-MBA Goals: To either go into strategy at an established renewable energy company (could be anything from NextEra to Arcadia), to continue consulting at another firm and develop a focus on renewables, or to found/join a clean tech startup

Hooks (?): only conversational English speaker in family; neither parent attended grad school; only one parent completed undergrad and works; been responsible for operations of family business since childhood

Hi dumbathyp - I'm just seeing your question now and notice no one has responded yet, so am happy to offer my brief thoughts in case they are still helpful to you. You do have a strong profile, though there is a lot of additional information I would want to know. Your grades are good and your GMAT is excellent. The deferred programs tend to give preference to candidates who otherwise might not later apply to their MBA programs, so I'm thinking that would work against you. Your work after college, particularly in strategy consulting, tends to feed candidates into MBA programs after a few years. Having said that, if you can differentiate yourself though your experience and your plans, I think you still could have a decent chance. I would want to dive more into your hooks - particularly your operations work since childhood. And I would very much like to understand more about your renewable energy goals, why you have them, and whether they tie to any experiences you have had already, even if extracurricular or club activities. I'm happy to dive in deeper via one of our free 30 minute consultations - if you are interested, please sign up here. In any case, best of luck to you!
