I just found out about HBS 2+2 so I'm a little late to the party, but should still be able to get the application in before R3.

I understand that HBS 2+2 is super competitive, so is there any idea in me applying?

B.Sc and M.Sc in Computer Science from top 1 technical university in Sweden. 4.7/5.0 GPA
B.Sc in Business (taken in parallell) from top 5 university in Sweden. 4.1/5.0 GPA
A couple of extra-curriculars with leadership experience, including one major project with 27 people reporting to me and a budget of $80000.
Internships in a global Swedish tech company and largest Swedish independent financial advisor.
710 GMAT
Job offers from several consulting firms (hopefully MBB as well, final round next week) for upcoming fall.
My passion is within tech, so the purpose of my MBA would be to get the foundation and credibility to start my dream tech company.

I feel like all the needed parts are there, but that everything is a bit too weak.
GPA good, but not stellar. Extra-curriculars good but too few. Internships not super impressive. GMAT a bit low. Etc...

What do you think?

I'd tend to agree with you that it's okay, but prob not HBS worthy. Consulting is great and all, but it's an over saturated pool of people with impeccable resumes, Ivy league undergrads, and sky high gmats. If you're dead set on HBS, boost up the GMAT and do something that they don't see every day. I think you're doing super well, but prob just come up a bit short for HBS. What's the harm in applying though? Spend the money and see what happens.

Your profile is pretty good but you are missing one thing to pop that will help you stand out from the crowd. I would recommend that you start in consulting, retake the GMAT and focus on a strong leadership activity. Then you can apply in a couple years with the regular cycle. You would have a better chance of getting in if you build a stronger profile between now and then.

Good luck and reach out if you want more early planning advice.

Best,
Scott

Very nice profile but at HBS very nice is not always enough, I think starting your career with a firm gameplan for setting yourself up for a successful app at HBS. The clear gap here currently is the one stand out thing in your profile that separates you from other candidates. Use your early career to secure this and you can position yourself for future greatness

I meant that I didn't have anything previously thought (I have done several Extra Act but I have to start remembering...), but now I'm tempted so I'll do my best.

internship and/or work experience: None. I'm from Córdoba Argentina, where there are a few bunch of big companies to which I applied for internships, but I couldn't get into any of them.
school, major, GPA: Universidad Tecnológica Nacional - Facultad Regional Córdoba. Industrial Engineering. GPA (1-10): 9.10 (which is high, not the top one but high)
test scores, GMAT or GRE: None. I expect to score a 700+ but I don't know yet.
language test scores: none, but I will start preparations for TOEFL in March. (My teacher told me that I will easily score 110)
country of citizenship: Argentina, Córdoba (It's not the capital..)
international exposure and languages: Spanish, English, One year of Chinese. I only traveled to Brazil several times for holidays with my family. I have applied for international exchanges but I still don't know whether I will get in.(pending of answer)
all leadership experience, duration and role: Last year, I've been in a non gvt organization which organizes congresses for students... we managed to bring an ex HBS MBA student... (I did). I was also in charge of talking in front of people to invite and sell them the tickets.(There were 300 participants). During the event, I had to do many activities (such as receiving the participants, the hbs graduate, and other speakers).
To tell you the truth, I was a silent guy (kind like shy) and I decided to get out of that comfort zone. That's why I entered the non gvt org. I wanted to speak more... and I was tired of getting nervous whenever I had to speak in front of many people. So I was literally the only one in the org who was always asking for speaking in front of many people. Because of that, I was the one speaking in front of 100-200-300 people. It was a really good experience..
In that same non gvt org, I represented my University as a subdelegate.
Maybe, this is the most significant experience...
I've also been in a catholic group, leading ,with a woman, 14 teenagers to improve their love to God... (not sure if i can talk about this, it was 3 or 4 years ago)
I've also played computer games, in which, as a member of teams, I had to coordinate several groups..
I've won the olympics of chess at school.
I've been in a "mission" to evangilize kids and teenagers from a poor neighborhood of my city.(just 15 days). Maybe, I will do so again on April 2019.
Now, I'm a councilman in the department of Industrial Engineering of my University (but there is nothing to talk about it.. very few things i've done, as the university is waaay too much bureaucratic).

all community involvement
goals: I want to work in Private Equity or in Finance for a while. Or in petro companies, mining companies or in entertainment companies. Apart from that, I want to run my own company (I have many friends who can't find a job and , as I had the chance to study, I feel that I have the responsability to give them jobs, you know what I mean) And I believe that an MBA from HBS will provide me with the opportunities and mental capacity to start a company..
unique background factors: coming from an small city (2 million habitants, very few applicants or none at all) and an average family in terms of money?
other diversity factors:
any other special or relevant info (special sauce): I've been training hard at the gym since I was 13. When I was 19 I decided that I was going to compete, but as soon as I did, I got my back injured. Since then, I cannot lift heavy weights, making me unable to compete...
your best guess at what you will discuss in your main essay: MMM not sure yet, but the experience in the non gvt org or my back injured...

+++ I've been dating a brazilian girl (when I was in my holidays) and it was a really nice to share personal ideas with someone who thinks very differently..

I hope everything I wrote is helpful. Just let me now If you want to know something else.

Hispanic Engineer Profile Eval HBS 2+2  [#permalink]

Show Tags

New post 11 Feb 2019, 22:21
Background
Hispanic, US resident
Native English and Spanish speaker

School
Ivy League
BS, Operations Research
GPA: 3.60
GMAT: 740

Professional Experience
Venture Capital Summer Analyst at growing crowdfunding platform (sophomore fall, spring, summer; 12 mos)
Investment Banking Summer Analyst at Middle Market firm, M&A (junior summer; 3 mos)

Leadership
Promoted equalization of opportunity and start up founding across diverse founders in the start up space (mission of my soph internship)
Rush Chair and Philanthropy Chair of my Fraternity - partnered with La Croix and my Uni to send 2 tons of water and clothes to devastated Caribbean Islands after Hurricane Irma. // Could mentioning involvement in a Fraternity be harmful to my app?
President of Club Lacrosse Team - initiated efforts to bring a varsity program to the school, raised $50K.

Community
Brand Ambassador for Guayaki Yerba Mate - promoted yerba mate culture as healthy alternative to other caffeine products on campus, the company incorporates a market driven restoration model through enfranchising small farming communities in the rainforests of South America.

Goals
I am planning on pursuing a traditional route of either 2-3 yrs in my IB position and maybe some time in PE if that makes sense down the road. In either development, I want to tie in my Bachelor's and incorporate my experience in finance and an MBA at HBS to get into a product management role at a large tech company.

Story
I plan to write about how I was homeless for a defining period of my life and weave in how that has translated into my perspective on life and traits (resilience, perseverance, hard work) and why HBS is the sensible next step in my journey as I keep climbing towards my goals. // Also not sure if this is something to share for a HBS app and if I should change my essay.

Thanks in advance for your review.

Hi FlatCulture,

Thank you for your post and for sharing your profile. You have strong academics and good overall GMAT score (what's the breakdown?). I also like your internships, leadership, and community engagement experiences. I recommend you spend some time fleshing out your professional plans, and why HBS makes the most sense. As far as your story (mentioned below), it's an interesting one, that I would like to learn more about. Since a few bullet-points do not fully capture your experiences, I cannot say if your homeless experience is the best story to include in your HBS application. Happy to talk further.

If interested, click fill this form to coordinate a call.

Good luck!

patto It's a little bit difficult to say right now because you've given me a lot of the activities but I don't know enough about the impact or the quality of the leadership. They're on the lookout for charismatic leaders that create tangible results.

However the NGO experience indeed sounds like your best bet and could be potentially very interesting. I think that I would go that direction for the essay if you were to apply because that has the greatest applicability to what they hope for graduates of HBS. Leadership impact Etc that's the name of the game and I think the rest of your profile given where you are from is very high-achieving.

I don't think it's going to be a big deal that you're from the second largest city... unless you can find out a way to show how that has shaped you. I would recommend that you probably leave all the church stuff out of the application, there's such diversity of religion here it's really not something they can take into consideration too much unless you can articulate the leadership aspect of it.

I like how you're thinking about how interesting it is to exchange with those who think differently from us, stay on that thread.

I'm not positive but I do think you have a decent shot because you would be underrepresented and given where you live and what you've done so far you have some good stuff.

I do think that getting an internship will be key. Getting some more International exposure will also be important.

Also you should develop some goals that are specific and clear: a vision that they (HBS) want to invest in. More than just you want to have a company and hire people. Start doing some informational interviewing on potential paths that you can take.

jimmybananas I'm just absolutely astonished by your profile it is mind-blowing. It's I'm speechless swear to God. It's amazing I am going to be really pissed off at you if you don't apply. I strongly encourage you to apply to GSB deferred as well.

Your profile shows that you already have a strong sense of purpose which is exactly what they want to invest in! You don't just have this goal about democratizing pharmaceutical access in Africa but you've taken classes on Coursera, interned in healthcare ... you really have a direction already and they are just going to eat you up by the spoonful.

You've done absolutely everything you can in your young life to enrich yourself, develop your skills, contribute to others, better humanity, it's wonderful.

You probably have already done this but what I would recommend is that you track everything that you do so for each person you've helped get into college find out how much money they got in scholarships...so that you can quantify everything.

There's definitely leadership (HBS) and inovation (GSB) here you just want to make sure you can also back that up with impact.

I like that you seem to have a personal angle as well you're interested in poetry so that makes you someone accessible and not just the mainstream accomplishment junkie.

I hope that your test goes well, and that you are at least within the 80% range.

As for your essay you're going to need some coaching on that one LOL it's a bit all over the place

you're going to want to pick one theme about yourself and really illustrate that through one or two examples. Help them get to know you as deeply as possible.

Please stay in touch keep us posted I'm pretty excited to see what will happen here. Your profile is amazing for anybody but the fact that you're from Congo it's almost a guarantee that you will get in if you do the application well. ( not just the essays but really everything you submit)

FlatCulture I like your profile. I like the interesting leadership experiences that you've had on top of the straightforward accomplishments stuff like being in Investment Banking in college. Ivy educated Hispanic both of those are terrific, your stats are good GPA just a tiny bit lower than the average but your GMAT is a little bit higher, given that the Quant is at least 49 you're in great shape.

I like this piece about providing equalisation of opportunity across diverse Founders, you'll want to highlight that and really demonstrates this type of purpose that you have. There's no shortage of high accomplishing people at HDs but there is a shortage of people who are charismatic Leaders with a conscience and that's how you'd like to put yourself across.

I do like the charity work that you did for the hurricane and I don't think that mentioning that is affiliated with a fraternity will be a problem at all, it's appropriate to talk about philanthropy, and that is often a part of frats. I like that you tracked the 50 million dollars, and would encourage you to do that in every area of your life, so that your CV stands out.

Very interesting about the Yerba mate oh, I've been ingesting that stuff as part of a kombucha for a long time never realizing it was caffeine-ish LOL. That is interesting stuff and I like that, if there was some type of passion or purpose behind it even better.

I guess I'm not really clear on why you're jumping out of IB before getting to PE and you want to go into a tech company. It's almost like you're changing Industries before you're even degit in the workforce LOL.

Just make sure to demonstrate that you've done your homework and that you know you're talking about in terms of what's going to make you happy and what your goals are.

It's always best for you to have a type of Legacy goal something that's going to allow them to visualize how they could benefit from helping you go to school there.

Having a big dream that's going to help others is going to be very helpful to you because their frankly not that motivated to just boey you into the ranks of investment banking. They would like to know that this is going farther than that.

It's interesting that you were homeless I mean unfortunate that you were homeless but it shows that you have conquered adversity and resilience is something that is revered.

I like that but I want to make sure you know that the essay should not just be a sob story or anything it really should be something that allows them to know you on a macro level but you use examples on a micro-level to illustrate that. There's kind of a difference between sharing personal information and helping them get to know you from the inside. So I'm not positive I would go for those on the essay. I do like how you say these have translated into your perspective on life and traits, that actually is very interesting and that's definitely the direction you will want to go.

jimmybananas I'm just absolutely astonished by your profile it is mind-blowing.

I am incredibly humbled by your words, really. I did not expect anything in that order as a reaction. To be honest, when you said " I am going to be really pissed off at you if you don't apply", it really hit home, as I arrived at a point where I started to lose confidence in my application and felt like I maybe would not apply. I saw receiving a profile evaluation as a way to boost me for the last checkpoints ahead. So thank you, thank you so much. I will definitely send in the application and hope for the best.

With regards to Stanford, I really would love to apply, but I do not deeply connect with the school as much as I do with Harvard. I find it hard to fake my interest in the school, while filling the long application. Maybe I will regret this later? But I think I will focus on Harvard only. What do you think?

I will take your suggestion to reflect on the students and the youths I have helped. I tend to just help and forget, but I think like you said, it would be very useful to be specific in determining impact. Is it neccessary to outline this quantification somewhere? In my resume or so?

For the essay, to be honest, I did not know how to explain it properly, here. Please let me try again.
My essay has a short introduction into myself then dives into 3 section; section 1 about the story of my company, its mission, vision and what deeply motivated me to work on it, section 2 what I intend to do when my company is successful (creating an African Y combinator) and the reasons why, section 3 a conclusion of the two previous sections, stating my mission, with an outro on how I think Harvard's mission resonates deeply with mine. Its overall 1300 words.
Does it still look confusing?

Thank you once again for your time and effort. I wish I could have you as a coach through this, but I am not sure I can afford it.

I am wondering if I should retake my GMAT

I got a 710 (90th percentile) but my quant score is a 47 (61st Percentile)

My GPA is a 4.9/5.0 for both my bachelors and my masters in computer science and engineering from MIT.

I would be applying 2+2 to HBS/Stanford GSB

Hi gsbdreamer thanks for your post, can you please provide the information requested at the top of this thread? I feel it is necessary to assess if a retake is compulsory or a nice to have.
