Notice the use of “and” before the underlined part. This looks like we need a modifier after the comma. The previous clause is an independent clause, so we should have an appropriate linkage with it.

A. This choice looks that follow an independent clause (X, ____, to enhance the possibility). That is not what we need for this sentence. A is out. 
B. “For enhancing” is not favored in GMAT. 
C. “for the purpose of enhancing” is wordy. It is not a correct form for the modifier we need.
D. “as a method to enhance” is wordy. It is not a correct form for the modifier we need
E. Correct. This choice is much better than B, C and D. “enhancing” conveys the purpose of the passage.

Let me analyze this question.

The one thing we should consider is below:
 1. Modification. 
The last sentence should modify the previous sentence. Ving. is a proper modifier.

Process of elimination. 
 
to + V1. cannot modify the previous sentence. Out.

The use of "for" is incorrect. Out.

Same as B.

"as a method" is incorrect. Out.

This choice is a proper modifier by using V.ing. Keep it.

So I choose E.
