How many different arrangements of A, B, C, D, and E are possible where A is either leftmost or rightmost?

A. 6
B. 12
C. 24
D. 48
E. 60

Let’s first determine the number of ways to arrange the letters A, B, C, D, and E, when A is the first letter. Since we know A is set in the first position, we really are trying to determine how many ways we can arrange the remaining letters, B, C, D, and E. Those 4 letters can be arranged in 4! = 24 ways.

Similarly, when A is the last letter in the arrangement, we again need to determine how many ways we can arrange the remaining 4 letters. Once again, this can be done in 4! = 24 ways.

Thus, there are 24 + 24 = 48 possible arrangements when A is either in the first or last position.
