If x and y are the positive integers. What is the value of x + y?
1) \(x^2+y^2\)= 10
2) xy = 3

GMATBusters Collection

Information

x and y are POSITIVE integers.

Requirement

Value of x+y..
So, individual values of x and y are NOT required.

Statements

1) \(x^2+y^2\)= 10
So Both x^2 and y^2 have to be LESS than 10, OR \(x\leq{3}\)......\(x\leq{3}\).
Possible values are 1, 2 and 3...
Only pair of x and y as 1 and 3 gives \(x^2+y^2\)= 10.
x+y=1+3=3+1=4
Suff

2) xy = 3
As both are positive integers, and xy=3=1*3, x and y are 1 and 3 ..
x+y=1+3=3+1=4
Suff
