Hi folks,
My IIMA interview was on 25th December @ Bangalore
First a bit of background:The company that I work for was recently acquired and I being in the IT strategy department have been pulling off all-nighters throughout December. I had to travel to Bangalore for the interview, and prior to interview had managed a grand total of just 4 hours of sleep in previous 3 days. So, I went to the interview feeling more like a zombie than my normal self.
The InterviewFirst, had to pick up a chit from a bowl, containing the topic for extempore. I was supposed to talk on the topic - Are the Good Days really ahead for India - for 5 minutes. As my mental state was beyond space and time
, I am not sure how much of the allotted time I actually utilized.
There were two interviewers - a male (M) and a female (F).
M: A couple of follow up questions on extempore.
I : Answered a few, messed up a few.
M: Your experience is cross industry or did you had an industry focus?
I: Cross Industry, but have domain knowledge of Retail.
M: So, what are the key indicators for success of a company in this Industry
I: Sales
M: Tell me one Industry where sales is not important
I: Yes, got your point. Sales per square footage is very important in Retail, along with Inventory turnover. (I can think of at least 20 more things now, but could manage only these two back then)
M: So how do you ensure that Inventory is properly managed.
I : Answered
F: Asked for a guesstimate.
I: Answered, a couple of cross-questions followed.
M: Which books have you read recently?
I: Answered, a bit of discussion on the book followed.
M: So what do you do in your company?
I: Could not recall what I said, I had almost entered REM sleep back then.
F: Have you prepared for the interview?
I: Mumbled a few words with embarrassment, and before I knew the interview was over.
No usual questions - why mba, why now, why this school, goals etc.. The interview lasted less than 15 minutes. The interviewers were very nice and no part of the interview was meant to stress me out, they just wanted to gauge my experience and thought process.
The endingI had to catch a late evening flight back to my city. Halfway the journey I started feeling dizzy and thought of splashing some water on my face. I remember reaching out for the knob to unlock the door of the washroom and the next thing I know - I am sitting on the floor surrounded by 4 air-hostesses. One was checking my pulse, another was announcing on the flight asking for a doctor and two others were discussing whether to re-route the flight. As I regained consciousness, there was a sigh of relief. They gave me some ORS to drink, after which I was better. I guess my BP had plummeted causing a blackout. For rest of the journey, the amount of attention that I got from my co-passengers would make a movie star feel embarrassed.
