only C makes sense. Also, this is a common pattern in gmat.
"in sth" + (As) + such ...as + (that)+ (as) + in sth

Here is my analysis :)

REVERSE CONSTRUCTION:

_There is one pencil on the table.

In this sentence:

+Subject = one pencil

+Verb= is

So the above sentence can be written as:

_One table is on the table.

Getting back to the question:

The sentence: In no other movie did a DC Comics character cause such a worldwide sensation as did the first release of Superman in 1978. is equivalent to:

In no other movie a DC Comics character DID cause such a worldwide sensation as did the first release of Superman in 1978.

COMPARISON:

The comparison here is between 2 PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES:

_a DC Comics character DID cause such a worldwide sensation IN NO OTHER MOVIE [PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE]

vs

_a DC Comics character DID cause such a worldwide sensation IN THE FIRST RELEASE OF SUPERMAN IN 1978 [PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE]

A. did the first release of Superman in 1978

REVERSE CONSTRUCTION:

the first release of Superman DID in 1978 --> WRONG MEANING because the first release of Superman DID NOT DO anything. It is a DC Comics character that DID

B. had the first release of Superman in 1978

REVERSE CONSTRUCTION:

the first release of Superman HAD in 1978 --> WRONG MEANING because the first release of Superman DID NOT HAVE anything. It is a DC Comics character that HAD

C. in the first release of Superman in 1978

CORRECT since C properly conveys the intended comparison.

D. the first release of Superman in 1978 did

LIKE A

E. the first release of Superman in 1978

WRONG because we are comparing:

_A clause = a DC Comics character DID cause

TO

_A phrase = the first release of Superman in 1978

Moreover , I feel that we don’t really need a “did” or a “had” as the year 1978 is mentioned. And of course the word “in” is required. Hence C.

Makes sense?

Why option C is correct ?
We are comparing release of superman with release of other character so D should be right answer.
