Is x greater than 2?

(1) x^2 is greater than 4.
(2) x is between -1 and 3.

Kudos for a correct solution.

Question : Is x > 2?

Statement 1: x^2 is greater than 4.

i.e. x > 2 or x < -2
NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: x is between -1 and 3.
x may be 2.5 or 1.5 hence
NOT SUFFICIENT

Combining the Two statements:
i.e. x > 2 or x < -2 and x is between -1 and 3

The Common range is 2 < x < 3
i.e. x is always greater than 2
SUFFICIENT

Answer: option C

Kudos for a correct solution.

1. x^2 >4
than it can be x>2 or x<-2. possible values for x is 3,4,5...and -3,-4,-5...so it can not be true. Not Sufficient.
2. x is between -1 and 3.
-1<x<3 if x is 1 than it is less than 2 but if x=2.5 than it is greater than 2.Not sufficient.
(1)+(2)
2<x<3 and x >2 so Sufficient.
Ans is C

Kudos for a correct solution.

Is x>2?

St 1: x^2 > 4

=> x can lie in two regions. x < -2 and x > 2. Hence not sufficient.

St 2: -1<x<3 => x can be greater than 2 and also less than 2 in this region. Hence Not sufficient.

Combining two Statements,

x lies in 2<x<3, Hence it is always greater than 2. Sufficient.

Kudos for a correct solution.

Statement 1: x^2 is greater than 4. If x^2 is 9, x can be 3 or -3. Insufficient
Statement 2: x is between -1 and 3. Insufficient
Using both statements, for if x^2 is greater than 4 and x lies between -1 and 3, then x has to be greater than 2

(1) x^2 is greater than 4.
(2) x is between -1 and 3.

Kudos for a correct solution.

800score Official Solution:

The statement (1) tells us that x² > 4. That means that x < -2 or x > 2. Therefore the statement (1) is not sufficient to answer the question.

The statement (2) tells us that -1 < x < 3. It is not sufficient to answer the question, because x can be 0, which is not greater than 2, or it can be 2.5, which is.

The both statements combined give the following system of the inequalities:
-1 < x < 3
x < -2 or x > 2

The solution to the system is:
2 < x < 3

Therefore x is definitely greater than 2.

The correct answer is C.

Question is x>2?

Statement 1 : value of x could be positive and negative to be x^2>4,Insufficient.So I need to know more information
Statement 2 : between -1 and 3 ,only x>2 values within this range valid to be >4(example: 3^2>4) Insufficient too obviously.

So,Statement 1 and 2 together makes the Correct Answer C for me
