Hi! You have a decent GMAT score, but you belong to the most over represented group- the Indian IT applicant. You must have really strong essays and stories to be able to differentiate yourself. Over the last 5 years, did you lead projects, resolve conflicts, influence decisions and achieve exceptional growth opportunities due to your "stellar" work and stakeholder management skills? Think deeply, how did you transition from a techie to a project manager given the challenges that you faced in all the projects you did. I also urge you to have a really strong recommendation to make your application stand out. Grabbing ad com's intrigue is key to landing an interview! Can a senior manager from one of the client companies you worked for make a strong recommendation for you?
Use your dance pursuits and achievements to underline commitment to your love for this art. Do you specialize in a specific dance form? Do you wish to make something of this hobby eventually?
Post MBA Goals- simple and attainable, but having a central theme to your narratives (what are you truly passionate about?) that smoothly transitions into your goals would be beneficial.

Best wishes

Hi, for ISB, your GMAT score is definitely a drawback to what otherwise seems like a decent profile. You must backup a 700+ GMAT score with strong leadership stores and narratives. In case you are interested on getting a feedback on your ISB essay you can send Essay1 to me for review.

With a 680 GMAT score you could get borderline success at A/B/C.

Best wishes

Hello adityassai

Most elements are strong- past scores, consulting background and some of the extracurricular activities are notable.
The GRE is just slightly below par, but may not be a concern in your specific case.
What the school will be curious to know is the need of an MBA as you are already in the industry why can't you grow organically here.
If you can present that strongly, you have a decent shot.

Unravelling ISB PGP Application Essays (R2/R3 Applicants pay attention!)

Essay1: Describe with examples the most important personal quality that you possess, which significantly enhances your prospects of being successful as a leader? (400 word max)

MBAGuide Tips:
A personal quality is an aspect of your personality, it is who you are and how you interact with others. Unlike personal skills that are learnt over a period, personal qualities are mostly intrinsic. In order to attack this question, applicants can retrospect on the qualities they have shown repeatedly (as children, adolescents, and adults in a professional set up) and that have helped them to bring stability or take control in the face of adversity, resolve conflicting situations, and alleviate problems significantly. In order to answer this question, this single quality (or a set of similar qualities) must be tied to 2-3 instances where the applicant consistently delivered positive results reinforcing his/her belief in the power of possessing this personality trait. In order to support the narrative, always mention the value created by the applicant, as well as feedback and response received from people and stakeholders involved in every problematic scenario. In addition to bind the application essays together, the applicants can highlight their passion in at least one of the instances mentioned which will help transition the narrative to their short term and long-term goals in Essay2.

Essay2: What are your short term and long-term career goals? How will Post Graduate Program at ISB assist you in achieving your goals? (400 words max)

It is best to treat the narrative in this essay in continuity of Essay 1, where the applicant would have explained about his/her professional undertakings in some detail. Keep goals specific, realistic, and tangible. Mention the source of inspiration for your choice of career goals, and how you plan to persevere to attain your goals- in the short term as well as long term.

Expert Tip: What differentiates a stellar leadership profile from an average profile is the ability to demonstrate in one’s stories that he/she is set up for tremendous success and achieving long term goals even without an immediate PGP admit, only it will take a little longer than the PGP path.

Avoid Red Flags- Not recommended to opt for goals that are a 180 degrees transition from your current career path (For Example. From Tech to Investment Banking). Avoid opting for goals that may not get understood well by the evaluator (For Example. Career titles with complex new age terminology not related to your current career track).

Show that you have taken time to interact with ISB alums and understand ISB PGP curriculum. Mention the subjects that interest you and extra activities that will enable you to develop connections and contribute towards peer-to-peer learning. Reinforce the strength of ISB Alumni network as the acme of corporate knowledge and mentorship in India.

Essay3: (Optional) Please use this space to provide any other information not covered elsewhere in the application that could significantly impact your candidature at ISB.

Use this essay only to provide some additional context in case you had a significant career break or are a re applicant to ISB PGP. Make sure to address the areas such as how you improved as an individual over your career break or during your additional year at work in case of re application. What undertakings did you pursue (if you were able to pursue any), what learnings did you gather and how have your strengths evolved?

Good Luck!

Hello
I have two queries related to the ISB R2 application and it is quite urgent as the deadline is tomorrow. Please address if you have an answer.
1. I have a gap of 2.5 months b/w two organizations because of a job switch. So the gap is merely because of early resignation from old and late joining to the new org. Does this count as a gap? If yes, please let me know what reason should I give.
2. My Passport has got expired and I have already applied for a renewal which is in progress. Shall I upload the old passport copy in the docs section?

Hello AnkitaGahlot

Work profile is interesting, is there a story behind transition from Comp Science (graduation) to power (work)?
Career goals look organic, GMAT is decent too, but most extracurricular and awards seem dated.
Don't see any evident weakness if you put together a decent application, good shot at receiving an interview invite.

Hi,

I plan to apply for ISB Round 3. Request for a profile evaluation please, and chances considering I am applying Round 3:

Age: 25 (Male)

GMAT: 720

Education: B.A., L.L.B. (Hons.) from a top NLU (CGPA: 5.94/7), also did a semi-funded semester exchange at a Top 20 Law School in US (GPA 4/4), XIIth- 92.8%(CBSE Science), Xth- 9.8/10(CBSE)

Work Experience: Total 25 months of work experience worked at a Tier I corporate law firm in India in their PE/M&A team. Work primarily entailed diligences, assisting in drafting of transaction documents and corporate advisory. I have worked on several USD 100m+ transactions from both buy/sell side, restructuring a co-op bank and generic commercial contracts like leases, NDAs, supply/distribution agreements, license agreements etc.

Internships (pre work-ex): 5 (4 week) Internships with top corporate law firms in India, in their corporate practices.

Extra-Curricular: Member of Recruitment committee, acad committee and moot court committee, these are all elected positions of responsibility. Also was part of research centres and assisted in published research ((specifically in IPR (Patents and SEPs) and Indian Bankruptcy Code) and organized (as head of a student committee) seminar courses, moot court competitions etc. I have speaker and memorial awards at national and international moot court competitions.

Referral: Partner at a Law Firm. However, I am wondering to ask a Senior Associate to write my LoR as the LoR requires decent time input and partner may not have the time to do justice. I can ask my College Professor for LoR also, I was his TA also and helped him with his research centre.

Post MBA Goal: Consulting

Thanks in advance!

Hi XATG11,
Below is my take on your profile.

GMAT: Above Average

Academics: Very Good; the international exchange program definitely adds color to your profile and should be highlighted in some way or the other.

Work Experience: Good. While the number of years of experience is on the lower side, the fact that you have been part of hardcore deal-making, capital raising, etc. adds value to your experience. Most of your work seems to be in a silo capacity where you have coordinated with different internal and external stakeholders to drive project objectives. Thus your leadership skills and team management skills are not coming out intuitively.

EC: Average; most of your extra-curricular participation seems to be limited to the time when you were in undergrad. It will be good if you can show some continuity post that at work – it can be anything – helping with recruitment of new employees, preparing onboarding material, organizing events etc. (Note: These are just examples to give you some direction)

Goals: Why consulting and what type of consulting would you want to pursue needs to be clearly stated along with a logical explanation of why you want to move into consulting when it seems that you have been learning a lot and also contributing significantly in your current role.

Summary:
- Focus on leadership skills
- Demonstrate a clear relationship between your experiences to date and a consulting career
- Bring out how you would be able to add value to the classroom based on your experiences and knowledge. Don’t just assume that ad coms will give you some leeway because there are not a lot of people from the legal fraternity who apply to ISB.

I am quite curious to know why you want to apply in R3 and NOT in R2 especially considering you seem to have all the application materials ready. And yes, chances of admission are better in R2 compared to R3.

I am an ISB alum, CO15 and have been guiding applicants in their admission journeys for the last 6 years. Please feel free to get in touch with me at [email protected] and/or +91-9701215544 in case you want a detailed discussion or need professional assistance.

Hello XATG11

Certainly a diverse profile. Past scores are decent, so it GMAT, and your work/academic background will really help you stand out from an avg applicant. A couple of Extracurricular also show good story potential.
Career goals is something that needs to be debated considering your motivation behind this goal and how you can be a good fit.

Hi Guys!

I plan to apply for ISB Round 3. Request for a profile evaluation please, and chances considering I want to apply in Round 3:

Age
26 (Male)

GMAT
Yet to take

Education
B.Sc (H) from St. Xavier's College (GPA - 7.4/10)
Class XII (ISC) - 89%
Class X (ICSE) - 89.4%

Work Experience
Generalist with 5 years cross-functional experience in client-handling, strategy, operations, product, and analytics across different sectors.

•Program Manager (International Expansion), CEO's Office at a leading Edtech startup (6 months - currently working)
Building the 0 to 1 journey as part of CEO’s Office in the US market by managing an 18-member cross-functional team and owning various workstreams such as Sales Ops, Performance Marketing, Capacity Building, and Strategic/Product Initiatives increasing the L2E to ~9% from ~5%.
Soon to be promoted (Associate Director) based on performance.

•Political Consultant (1 year)
Worked as a Consultant for the State Assembly Elections (selectivity rate <3%) which comprises a Client-facing role consulting and working closely with one of India’s biggest political parties (national and state-level politicians and bureaucrats), designing campaign strategies, preparing and operationalizing strategic long-term election plans, and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data, impacting 50 million voters.
Top 5% of the employees in the entire organization with ‘Exceed Expectations’ performance rating.

•Deputy Manager, CarDekho (2 years)
Client-facing role which involved suggesting business strategies to the Client, analytically synthesizing data to create performance and funnel reports for identifying bottlenecks, single-handedly managing the entire process design-operations-tech-product teams for various top two and four-wheeler manufacturers in India.
Top 10% of the employees to be promoted during the COVID-19 pandemic with an ‘Exceeded Expectations’ performance rating; was also a recipient of the ‘RockStart Rookie’ award.

•Associate, ZS Associates (~2 years)
Handled independent work-streams which involved calculating the Incentive Compensation, Goal Setting, targeting, and segmentation, along with rigorous reporting for US pharmaceutical clients using analytical tools.

Positions of Responsibility
• Vice President-Elect at Gurgaon Orators Toastmasters Club for two consecutive terms
• Founding Member at Entrepreneurship Development Cell, St. Xavier’s College (right now its the most sought after society in college)

• Elected Vice President, Leadership Training Service (LTS) at school

Extra-Curricular Activities
• Selected as an Impact Scholar at Global Governance Initiative (selectivity rate <5%)

• Avid Toastmaster winning numerous awards at club and area-level; mentor at Gurgaon Orators Toastmasters Club
• Selected for the 2nd Chinese Student Exchange Program between St. Xavier’s Collegiate School, Kolkata and Shida Fuzhong High School, Yunnan, China on the basis of merit and interview (This exchange program was the first of its kind in India)

Projects
• Studying and Defining the ‘Press Freedom Index of India’ under Shri Atul Kumar Tiwari, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt. of India. Also working on getting this published.

Social Work
• Volunteer at various events at a leading NGO
• Engaged in fundraising, plantation, and awareness activities at an NGO a long time back

Post-MBA Goals
Short term - Strategy Consulting (Although I have worked as a generalist throughout my function has always been consulting and working on strategic projects is what I enjoy the most)
Long term - Either I want to start something of my own in equating education access to students from disadvantaged backgrounds/or in the social impact space concerning governance and upliftment of education

Concerns
1. My working hours are very taxing and also include work during weekends. Keeping that in mind I may end up getting a below-average GMAT score before the R3 deadline. Should I try for this year or R1 next year? If I am not able to take admission this year and join next year, my work ex will be above 6 years (with a leadership role and good growth), hence will I be an outlier in terms of cracking MBB/placements in general/peer learning/age?
2. Is ISB the right place for my goals? Also, which top MBA schools abroad are within my reach (provided I get a decent GMAT score)?
3. Any suggestions/areas of improvement on my overall candidature.

Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks!
