You have a typical Indian IT profile so it'll be tough. Also your acads aren't very impressive. I would work super hard on the GMAT and try to score as much as possible. Target for a min. of 740. Also think of a few backup options in case ISB doesn't happen. Wish you all the very best

anishaasaha
Your experience is on a lower side but your profile is atleast somewhat different, which is good. Try to score as much as you on the GMAT. Target 730+ as a bare minimum. You left college just 2 years back so I'm sure who haven't lost the habit of studying :-D
Also I don't understand what you wish to do after MBA? Have you given a thought to it? In my opinion making a career in IP is far more rewarding than what most of post-MBA roles would offer. I'm based in Singapore and folks here in IP earn much more than MBA guys, equivalent to lawyers and sometimes even more. Think about that. PM me if you'd like to discuss sometime.

Thanks Rohit6.

Any pointers on how i could improve my profile other than the GMAT score. Considering I apply in R1 and R2 of this year.

I am still looking at schools, my current list includes - ISB, IIM, Tech specific schools in US (Similar your school list) and Rotman. Is that aiming too high or do I have a shot

Thanks again!

If you come from an overrepresented group all these schools are going to be super tough. I'm telling you honestly.
This is already April so there is little you can do now to improve your profile, other than giving your 100% at your work/extracurriculars where you're already involved in. In my opinion your time would be better utilised to get as high a GMAT as you can. Even that would help only to an extent. Then try apply to majority of these schools in R1 and make rock solid applications. You can hope something then otherwise it gonna be really tough.
At this moment, stay positive, stay calm and keep working :-D

Thanks for the advice Rohit6. Keeping calm and working hard :-D

Over represented group, ie Indian IT engineer right?

I was hoping for some of my career progression highlights to help with the criteria, Can you let me know from your perspective if they would actually help,or are they also the typical 'run of the mill' for normal applicants of ISB and other top schools

Started managing teams at 24.
Owned and ran 20 member multi location delivery team for one of the countries largest payment system at 25
Above system Awarded best in the world, at MWC (Barcelona)
Conversant in 5 languages, which helped connecting with teams at different locations
Consistently youngest among my peers across my career
Exposure to CIO and CTO level discussion across multiple MNC's

There are more points i could hash out, But the above is the gist of it.

Thanks again for taking the time :)

I think you're thinking too much. The stories that you will choose from your past will largely depend on the school you're to, as every schools has slightly different taste, your relative positioning in your applicant pool, word-limit of the essays and multiple other factors. It's always better to have a thorough discussion with an admissions consultant and/or someone else (may be a friend) who understands the b-school admission process and brainstorm these stories before you start an application. For now, focus on the GMAT and the ongoing stuff in your life..

All the best

Hi Rans,

I agree with the other posters that your academics are on the lower side. While your GMAT score is ok, I think it will help retaking it, specifically in context of your low B. Tech. marks.
Your work experience in Nuclear power seems to be the real differentiator to me- what exactly are you doing there, what are your achievements and how will this experience help you contribute to the ISB class? Additionally, what are our career goals after ISB?

I'd also like to understand about your restaurant business- what is its scale? How is it doing? What are your future plans related to it?

Feel free to share your resume with us at my email address provided in my signature. I'd be happy to do a free consultation with you,

Hi Akshay,

Retake the GMAT. At this point the GMAT looks like your biggest challenge.
The rest of your profile is competitive for the IIMs.

Hi,
New to the forum.
I have an Electrical engineering degree from Gujarat University. 10 plus years of experience in the field of Engineering Services.
Have worked for about 5 years outside India (North America (2 yrs),Europe 2.5 yrs & Singapore). Have handled projects across different domains (renewables & Railways).
My academic credentials are :
10 th :78 percent
12th : 83 percent
Engineering: 66 percent.

I have given a couple of practice tests and have scored about 640 odd. What would be a good score (with my experience level ) to be even considered for ISB?.
Any Guidance would be highly appreciated.

Hi,

A GMAT score around 700 should definitely help, given that your academics are also low.

More important will be the following factors:
1. your achievement and impact within your organizations.
2. What are your career goals and why is an MBA important at this point in time?
3. What will you add to the ISB class.

These questions must be answered convincingly in your application.

Hi Gaurav,

Things look good at your end. I am not sure how your GMAT score will be viewed for the IIM PGDM courses, but for ISB, its ok.
As you are a younger applicant I would stress upon a few things that must reflect in your applications:
1. maturity
2. some leadership experiences/ potential
3. clarity in career goals
4. what will you bring to ISB. How will your international exposure help you to contribute at ISB.

Eventually a stellar application will open the gateway for an interview invitation. :-D Do reach out if you'd like to discuss further

Hi Piyush,

An IT services background makes the applicant pool extremely competitive. While you seem to be performing well at your job, it will be important to showcase the impact you have driven professionally in your organization.

What you can do to improve your chances:
1. Work hard on GMAT. A score of 700+ would be great, the higher the better.
2. Take up a project at work where you can demonstrate outcomes or leadership qualities.
3. Identify what are your career goals and how an MBA can help you achieve them.

A strong GMAT score and thoughtfully written essays can make all the difference to an ISB application. So use your time to work hard on your GMAT and introspect on your goals, so that you are ready with a stellar application.

Dear Members, please can I request you to review my profile for ISB?

I am worried about the low number of years of work ex (it will be 3 years by the time i start the class)

The following is my profile:

Nationality: Indian
Male
Undergrad- Mechanical Engineering
University: VIT, Vellore
CGPA- 8.25/10

GMAT 710 (q50, v36, awa5, ir5)

Professional Experience:
1. Since i passed out of college in 2015, I have been working with EY (Ernst and Young) as a management consultant.
2. Have been on a fast-track career growth (became a consultant from an analyst in less than 2 years, a career progression that generally takes 4 years)
3. Have worked with various industries: Industrial Paint, Automotive, Tyre, Real Estate
4. Have worked in different competencies: Impact of GST tax on supply chain (GST is the hot topic in India these days), New market entry/market expansion strategy
5. Have led certain work streams in some projects and in the process guided and managed small project teams, which are part of a larger project.
6. Received a Kudos award from my director because i was able to handle one of the clients almost independently, very early in my career, leading to successful completion of the project.
7. Went above and beyond my responsibilities to get business for the firm with minimal help from my seniors.

Social Involvement:
1. Founder/President of a NGO in Delhi, India, with focus on education for the underprivileged.Have almost 300 volunteers working with us towards achieving our goal. Have been active since almost 18 months.
2.Have been actively teaching the underprivileged since i was in school.

College Activities:
1. Represented my college in United States for a SAE competition. our team had manufactured an All-Terrain Vehicle from scratch and invited by Shell to compete with almost 130 teams from around the globe(majorly from U.S. only). Was responsible for the marketing, sponsorships and team logistics and arrangements.
2. Represented my college in Silverstone, U.K. for a SAE competition. our team had manufactured an electric run Formula1 car nd invited by Shell to compete with almost 110 teams from around the globe(majorly from Europe). Was responsible for the marketing, sponsorships and team logistics and arrangements. On the technical side was part of the mechanical transmissions team for designing and manufacturing our car's transmission system.
3. Co-authored a research paper to analyse if a MBA in finance helps people make better personal finance decisions.
4. Participated in organising all major tests in our college.

Internships:
1. Maruti Suzuki: Did a 1 month summer internship in their R&D mechanical transmission. Hot the highest grading by my mentors in Maruti.
2. SKODA: Did a 1-month summer internship in their authorised workshop to gain knowledge about the on-ground work (Repairing and maintenance).
3. Chalkstudio: Did a 3-month internship with this startup while in the final year of college (the 8th semester is relatively less time consuming). Got to manage a team for 5 people.

Letter of Recommendation:
1. Should be able to get recommendations from my senior partner in EY and one of the clients whom i worked with(he is at vice-president level and was our SPOC for the project; the organisation is one of a very well know American tyre company and did a project with their India office).
2. Should also be able to get decent recommendations for my NGO,about which i have mentioned above.
