1. The academic profile (10/12 and GPA) are good. Given that the GMAT score is just about ISB's average, if it's being compared against a similar profile with a higher score (the odds of that are debatable depending on the strength of the application), this could be a risk

2. Your professional experiences are interesting, given the Oracle brand and the promotions. Would suggest having clear answers to the following broad questions: what your post MBA goals are (target sector, function, geography, also companies), why MBA, why now and why you are better placed (i.e. vs others). This should hopefully help craft stronger essays

3. ECs offer good talking points. Make sure to highlight what you learned from them, and how these can be translated to your journey in/ post ISB.

Check out my recent blog on ISB's latest essay prompts and approaches/ suggestions to craft strong essays

amithtm: some quick q's before sharing feedback:

1. At Siemens, given that you've led teams/ projects - is the lack of a "leadership title" more to do with the promotion cycles or title nomenclature? And were there changes in responsibilities during your time at Weir? Any increased responsibilities could potentially count towards the leadership arc, but I'd like to understand better
2. What are your goals (target roles) post MBA?

Hi Arvind,
Thanks for your reply.
1. Yes you could say I was referring to promotion cycles. There was an increase in responsibilities when I changed companies. At Weir I was more of a Junior Engineer working under a Team Lead, but at Siemens I took full ownership of components of Wind Turbine R&D (from concept stage to prototype testing and to serial production). During my time at Weir, I have also led a few projects, apart from my regular job, in Automation and Value Engineering. It was more of a project management rather than managing people. Again no change in job title.
2. I am targeting Operations/Supply chain post MBA, preferably in Manufacturing industry.

Stellar profile!

I too come from a core sector (automotive auxiliary) in industrial product design background and have worked extensively on parts standardization for cost effectiveness and FEA and failure mode analysis in manufacturing processes pre MBA. Hope I can add value to your concerns.

Your leadership capabilities and "career progression," will be of utmost interest to the schools. As 6 years is a good enough time to spend in a pre-MBA job, the schools will want to know in depth about your professional and personal growth during this time.

You might need help to reflect on your leadership stories. I believe you have solid experience in design to production rollout across areas such as developing product concepts, creating design specifications, testing prototypes, troubleshooting process problems, cost optimization and collaborating with teams at all levels for successful product launches. You must be strategic in how you speak about your experience which is more technical so the impact of your work can be easily understood by the evaluator or the interview panel. Show that you have motivated teams through your functional responsibilities to move projects forward and achieve desired results, resolved conflicts with persuasion, influenced senior management decisions with your keen observations and insights, and added value to your team and the organization as a whole.
You did not mention your goals, but you can certainly leverage your passion for your current role/industry and express a desire to expand operations strategy (in management consulting) for clients at a top management consulting company or in a strategy role at an industry-focused company. The goals strategy also requires you to think thoroughly and connect dots should you want to move to an entirely different domain.

In addition, Siemens is a solid brand that is represented at the best schools in the world, and you could further distinguish yourself through your insights into various projects that the team is tackling in the field of renewable energy, which is a hot topic.

Your ECs are good as well but maybe there's more you could unravel.
GMAT will be very critical to your success. Try to attain a balanced score (a Q49 or above on quant is recommended).

Feel free to connect should you need further feedback on your profile

amithtm - thanks for the update.

1. Your acads and GPA are fine, would recommend targeting a 710+ on GMAT: this would come close to ISB's average; the higher the better.

2. Professional experiences are interesting, given the association with the Siemens brand and the role/ responsibility upgrades through your journey. Would suggest two approaches to alleviate the concerns on the lack of leadership titles: (A) highlighting the role progression through the CV and essays, specifically mentioning the achievements you made, skills you picked up, what you learned, and how these can translate to post-MBA goals (B) having strong LoRs from managers/ seniors who can speak to your responsibility changes, quoting specific instances and how your leadership skills have evolved

3. Post MBA goals in Operations/ Supply chain/ Manufacturing can typically involve (A) management position within a certain function, or general management, in a company that is related to the areas you have worked in (B) consulting role in a firm such as MBB's, Kearney, Big-4 or operations/ supply-chain focused boutiques. Both paths can have interesting choices given your experiences and transferable skills. Identifying which of your target companies recruit from the schools you are applying to can help connecting with alum etc. - this can be a great way to learn more insights about the roles.

4. Would suggest, if you aren't already, considering programs including the PGPx's in IIM A/B/C and certain US/ European programs in the T10-25 list (if you are interested in options abroad) that have good post MBA career paths in your target roles.

Hope this helps a bit. Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

•Won several star awards for taking up ownership of complete end to end delivery of projects.

Certifications:
• Value Engineering, Module 1 - SAVE International, USA (2018)
• Poul Learning Program - Technical training to upskill Mechanical Design capabilities, Nettur Technical
Training Foundation (2022)

Extra Curriculars:
1. Technical Lead – Team Haya Racing Formula Student Team (PES Institute of Technology) Dec 2014 —Feb 2017)
•Responsible for setting design goals for the team and ensured the team was technically equipped to
meet the goals and resolving technical issues. Participated in national level Formula Student events.
•Won the Design Presentation Award in Student Karting Championship- 2015.

2. Active Member of Bangalore Astronomical Society (BAS)
Volunteered for many student outreach events on astronomy, organized by IISc and Indian Institue of
Astrophysics (IIA).

3. Active Member of Dhwani Toastmasters Club, Bangalore, a nonprofit educational organization that
teaches public speaking and leadership skills.

I wanted to know, given my experience in a core sector and lack of leadership positions in my career, how strong is my profile?
Appreciate your time, thanks.

amithtm: some quick q's before sharing feedback:

Regards,
Arvind
HEC Paris MBA alum, Admissions interviewer

Hi Arvind,
Thanks for your reply.

Regards,
Amith

Hello Animesh_Dalai96

You seem to have a balanced profile in terms of Work Ex (decent career progression, and above all good potential of story telling), Diversity (your work ex add this anyway, but would love to hear more around extracurricular activities too) and Career Goals (while you have a direction in mind, I would recommend getting more specific from here- talk about your long term goals and your personal drive/motivation behind these goals, the short term goals immediately post MBA, what roles and companies you wish to target and how will ISB act as a stepping stone to help you achieve those goals- what new skills will it add, what existing skills will it build upon).
A GMAT of 710+ will take you places (also to help that average graduation score). Higher the better.

Hello amithtm

Let us dissect the profile into its basic elements-

1. Academics- Past scores are decent, I would recommend a 710+ to stay above the average of the class and stand out in the large and competitive pool of engineering applicants.
2. Work Ex- Your work profile is interesting, and while you have stated lack of leadership, I would say that leadership is a perspective- if you can show via your stories that you have had a positive measurable impact on the your company, clients and teams, you can show a future potential leader to the adcom. Talk about your career progression and achievements at work (keep in mind that awards and promotions are not achievements, they are the results of your achievements)
3. Diversity- In addition, some of your extracurricular activities are interesting and among B-school favorites and that should help you stand out. The trick is again to show accomplishments and impact here.
4. Career Goals- What is missing in your profile is a mention of career goals. Your future aspirations are as much a part of your profile as is your past experience/scores. Talk about your long term goals and your personal drive/motivation behind these goals, the short term goals immediately post MBA, what roles and companies you wish to target and how will ISB act as a stepping stone to help you achieve those goals- what new skills will it add, what existing skills will it build upon. This should make for a comprehensive narrative.

If you work on all the four points above, you have a profile worth a decent shot.

Hello atulchitanvis

Don't see any evident weakness in your profile, it is pretty balanced.
At the same time, no exact spike either.
Academically, past scores and GMAT is about average.
Work ex is in the tech sector which means a lot of competition and your storytelling in the essays/LOR/interviews will have to be stellar to help you stand out in the largest and most competitive pool of applicants. Make sure you impress the adcom with your career progress and achievements (keep in mind that awards and promotions are not achievements, they are the results of your achievements, the impact you had on the business of your company).
Diversity is low due to the tech background but the extracurricular can help. The key is similar to work ex- talk about impact and accomplishments here. More than a laundry list of activities the focus should be in proving how your experience in these activities will help you add value to the experience of your batch mates inside and outside the classroom.
Lastly, career goals are clear and organic. To make your narrative strong, focus on beyond just stating the career goal and talk about your long term goals and your personal drive/motivation behind these goals, the short term goals immediately post MBA, what roles and companies you wish to target and how will ISB act as a stepping stone to help you achieve those goals- what new skills will it add, what existing skills will it build upon. This should make for a comprehensive narrative.

All the best

HI Sancharey,

Interesting to note that you are applying with a somewhat differentiated profile from a large chunk of the applicants. That could help you somewhat in the admission process. That said it's important to know more details about your work profile- what you do, what your achievements are and what kind of impact have you made on business.

Your GMAT score is low and that can harm you in the application process- specifically the quant scores. The MBA academics require high quantitative and analytical skills, and the adcom would look for assurance that you can handle the academic workload. As your past degrees are in non quant subjects, the onus of proving your quant skills falls on the GMAT Q score, which is low. IMO, consider a retake.

While I understand that you wish to work in marketing, I would like to understand why in a consulting firm? You could get into a post MBA marketing role where you will get more hands on experience implementing marketing strategies. So, I do wonder, why consulting where you will join as a generalist and MAY eventually have the chance to move into the marketing practice - its not an assurance.

Hi Sancharey, interesting profile overall. Some comments from an initial review:

1. The academic scores are on the lower side, both for BA/ PGD and GMAT. Ideally, a stronger GMAT (ISB's average is ~710, with a balanced Q&V) can compensate for lower GPA's and can also improve your chances, hence I'd suggest a retake.

2. The professional journey is interesting, particularly the association with brands such as TCS/ NDTV and the government. Were there any promotions in your roles though? Explaining key projects and the impact you had (ideally quantified) can help better assess the strength of your profile.

3. ECs are alright, any more recent ones (since 2020)?

4. Would suggest narrowing down on your post-MBA goals. Some questions which can help think about it: why marketing/ consulting? which specific (sub)domains within marketing? any specific industries/ verticals of interest? what are your transferrable skills? what value-add would an MBA (and particularly ISB) add? where do you see yourself long-term?

Hope this helps a bit.

Could someone give me a profile evaluation? I'm a 26-year-old male candidate.

Academics
10th: 90% (ICSE)
12th: 93% (ISC)
UG: 70% (BCom Hons)
GMAT: 680 (Q43, V40)

Extra curriculars
These were all during my college years. I was the member of the events team that handled an annual fest with 40+ events each year in all of my three years in college. I was active in college politics and elected as the class rep in each of the two years I stood as a candidate. I have won several accolades in writing and management events.

Work experience
I will have over six years of work ex in the sports content industry (four years in sports media, two years in sports data analytics) by end of March 2024. I have worked on and with (as direct clients) most of the top sporting leagues that you can think of (IPL, English Premier League, NBA, to name a few).

Career goals
I want to move into product and consultancy roles. In my application, I have highlighted huge similarities in the sports content industry and B2C industries (which I firmly believe to be true). In my years, I have worked on the functions of SEO, editorial planning, team management, social media, budgeting, data analysis and finally, product planning. I want to do an MBA to get a better grasp of the business side of things, which I believe would make me the complete package for the career progression plans I mentioned at the beginning.

If someone could give me an idea of b-schools that I should realistically be targeting (I will apply to all the top ones in India, of course), I would be grateful.

Additionally, I have one doubt. Of the six years of work ex I mentioned, I worked on an exclusive contract as a consultant (I could not take any other work with any other company) and not as a full-time employee. I have the necessary documents to prove the nature of the contract. Should I mention this period in my work ex or skip it?

Many thanks in advance to whoever bothers to go through this long comment and takes the time to reply.

Hi,

Sharing some thoughts here:

1. Grades and GMAT score are not as strong as your niche experience. Work ex with the content industry is not so uncommon, but sports is a niche space, that expertise would be a plus for you. Your GMAT is not a blocker though, it's fine.
2. As for your doubt - do mention all work experience, why not! Since you have all the documents for it, you can surely add it.
3. Your choice of schools is on the right track. Go ahead!

All the best!

Hi raunakjr97 hope you are doing well

Your Quant score is very low. Since the PGP/MBA is ultimately a quantitative and analytical program, you might suffer not getting selected only because of the GMAT. Since I like your profile, I would definitely recommend you retake the exam to get a better quant score.

If I were in your position, I would address the low quant score in the application. Not addressing a weak aspect of your profile in the application does not mean the adcom will overlook it. Instead, the adcom may think that you are unaware of the weaknesses and the requisites for an MBA program and career ahead and yet choose to ignore them. However, if there is a reason for your unexpected performance on the GMAT, schools will appreciate an honest explanation. By all means, show a willingness to retake the exam if the school asks you to.

If you would like you can read these strategies to position your case strongly despite a low GPA/GMAT
