Hi Runawaybon, while everything is decent, I would like to ask you how much you were scoring in GMAT, in your mocks?

If you were scoring significantly higher than 700, I would suggest that you consider retaking the GMAT to make your profile stronger, especially considering that there are still few months before the R2 deadline. Note that 700 is already a decent score, but a higher score will make the profile stronger.

On the other hand, if you were getting a score of around 700 in mocks as well, then just focus on the application.

p.s. I don't get any hint on your post-MBA goals, from your post.

Did you not even make it to the interview stage?

If you did, you could get in touch with ISB for feedback. Incorporating that feedback in your reapplicant essay and showing specific action on that feedback, is generally a good way to approach the reapplicant essay.

Also, do mention that you have a vastly improved GMAT score (even if you do not mention the exact score) in the reapplicant essay.

Thanks for the revert!

Regarding the mocks scenario, I was getting a score of around 700-730 during my preparation.
As for the existing role and my post MBA goals, I'd like to switch my role from the existing software development to the technical/product management domain. I understand that it's not an elaborate/ descriptive insight into my future goals but I hope you get the picture.

PS: This might not be the right forum to ask this but with the aforementioned profile, can I target some good/top B-Schools globally? If yes, could you please share your valuable insight on what all options could be reachable with this profile & score?

I have applied for the first round.
submitted my essays already.
Yes i did get the interview invite and problem was with communication and articulation of ideas. these were not at par as expected from a consultant.
I did mention my score improvement and also wrote that I have joined toastmasters for my communication improvement.
I just want to know what are the chances of a interview call and a final admit?
Plus how to prepare for my interview. I think interview was the culprit as communication and articulation mostly come in interview part.

Chances of an interview call are very bright (provided that essays are in decent shape); chances of a final admit will obviously depend on how you perform in the interview.

Frankly, I do believe that you can consider a re-attempt after a month's prep. A 730 is definitely better than a 700.

Hi munindra95,

Since you have got the shortlist last year for interview and your score has improved, you should get a shortlist this year as well unless you have done something terribly wrong with your application. Candidates from ICOL/BPCL/HPCL/ONGC etc generally get the interview call with a decent application at an 680+ score.

Your profile is good, but profiles dont matter that much for admission.

About your selection chances, well, no one can predict that. Reason - GMAT and profile has nothing to do with your interview performance. We have seen candidates working in same city in same plant of IOCL with same work profile getting opposite result to their respective GMAT score. Candidates with 690-700 have qualified, while candidates with 730-740 have not qualified with exactly same work profile. That means interviews are very important and your admission depends on how you perform there.

As you have already submitted your application, you should focus completely on interview part. And hope that you have also applied to other colleges as well.

Working as a Software Engineer at UKG (short for Ultimate Kronos Group) for almost a year and 2 months now.

Extra Curricular:

1) Participated in debates, exhibitions & competitions throughout school & college life
2) Won an INR 5000 Science Scholarship for a national level exhibition; Prize Money of INR 1200 at District Level; Reached State Level of the same.
3) Was part of the school music band as a Drummer.

You are a relatively young applicant for 1 year PGP MBA or a 2-year MBA in the US (although you could apply for ISB deferred admit with a super strong application); however, if you give yourself some more time to enhance your profile (At least 1-2 more year before you can apply) you could grab projects and professional opportunities that add a new dimension to your portfolio. The profile enhancement would need to show as a take-off point in your career graph depending on your goals. For example, in a strategic role in a startup or in strategy where you get hands-on experience in the building blocks of businesses, negotiate an international assignment, or get into beginner roles in an industry you want to break into post-MBA. I feel there would be no dearth of opportunities for someone young and ambitious.

You should try to showcase how you are different from other similar applicants given your early promotions, thorough industry insights, project management, and crisis management exposure, and mature overall outlook.

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't secure admission to ISB last year. In my discussions during ding analysis, I've encountered several applicants from the army and public sector who faced similar challenges in their initial attempts. There appears to be a common pattern in these situations.

Admissions committees often hold preconceived notions about candidates from government or public sector jobs. These perceptions may include a perceived lack of autonomy, limited diversity in responsibilities, and slower career growth opportunities. However, it falls upon you to break through these stereotypes and showcase your unique qualities. Demonstrate what sets you apart and how you consistently exceed expectations. Highlight your proactive nature, adaptability, and track record of delivering exceptional results. Emphasize your eagerness to learn, grow, and expand your skill set by pursuing further education, acquiring new skills, and tackling complex projects. Remember that admissions committees can only gain a comprehensive understanding of your profile through your application materials, such as your resume, essays, and letters of recommendation. Make the most of these documents to convey your true potential. Prepare well for the interview. Speak about your goals narrative with someone who understands the MBA journey and beyond.

This bias isn't limited to individuals in the public sector. I, too, worked in R&D for a private company for five consecutive years, and during my MBA interview at a top global school, I was confronted with "While you've worked in various countries, your responsibilities appear to have remained consistent. How would you describe your career evolution?" To be honest, I wasn't prepared for this question at the time and felt somewhat caught off guard. With the benefit of hindsight and experience, I can now confidently tell you that regardless of your background, whether it's in the government or private sector, you should anticipate and prepare for your growth narrative, and do better than most PSU applicants. This is especially crucial, given your extensive five-plus years of experience in the same domain.

Could someone give me a profile evaluation? I'm a 26-year-old male candidate.

Academics
10th: 90% (ICSE)
12th: 93% (ISC)
UG: 70% (BCom Hons)
GMAT: 680 (Q43, V40)

Extra curriculars
These were all during my college years. I was the member of the events team that handled an annual fest with 40+ events each year in all of my three years in college. I was active in college politics and elected as the class rep in each of the two years I stood as a candidate. I have won several accolades in writing and management events.

Work experience
I will have over six years of work ex in the sports content industry (four years in sports media, two years in sports data analytics) by end of March 2024. I have worked on and with (as direct clients) most of the top sporting leagues that you can think of (IPL, English Premier League, NBA, to name a few).

Career goals
I want to move into product and consultancy roles. In my application, I have highlighted huge similarities in the sports content industry and B2C industries (which I firmly believe to be true). In my years, I have worked on the functions of SEO, editorial planning, team management, social media, budgeting, data analysis and finally, product planning. I want to do an MBA to get a better grasp of the business side of things, which I believe would make me the complete package for the career progression plans I mentioned at the beginning.

If someone could give me an idea of b-schools that I should realistically be targeting (I will apply to all the top ones in India, of course), I would be grateful.

Additionally, I have one doubt. Of the six years of work ex I mentioned, I worked on an exclusive contract as a consultant (I could not take any other work with any other company) and not as a full-time employee. I have the necessary documents to prove the nature of the contract. Should I mention this period in my work ex or skip it?

Your grades are excellent. Your GMAT score is fine, unless you're considering a retake based on your preparation. You still have time before the Round 2 deadlines, (your current score is acceptable for applying); but you can think about retaking the test later.

International work experience would be a valuable addition. Your extracurricular activities look solid, especially as you've been keeping up with your publications. Knowing an International language always is a plus. Now, it's about telling your unique story. Take a moment to reflect on what can truly boost your application.
