Hi,

Please find my short version of CV below.

Academic qualification:
- 10th CBSE : 86%
- 12th: 93%
- B.E. (ECE): 82.5 (Class 2nd)
- M.S (Work integrated stuff) 3.6 CGPA

Experience: 14 years of experience in embedded software development from enigneer to project lead to Manager in a private limited company

Language proficiency: English, Tamil, Hindhi (basic) and Japanese (Basic)

I am 36 years old, thinking to enhance my leader ship and entrepreneurial skills by doing MBA but I am skeptical whether pursuing MBA at this age is worth it.
To be honest I dont have much experience in voluntary work as well.

At this point my idea is to do GMAT and get good score (more than 700) and decide everything later.. Is this a right approach ?
I am always deliberiating whether to spend 3 months time in GMAT preparation and then do absolutely nothing after that ..... I have a kid and given my work schedule, 3 months of time for GMAT is very precious which i dont want to waste it. If the prospects for me to do MBA is good then I would like to do it.
Is there a scope for getting scholarship for me after getting good GMAT score? By the way I recently moved to UK, will this be of any help in getting scholarship?

Thanks, hope to hear from you people.

Hi Magesh,

Firstly, are you planning to apply to ISB (its the ISB thread) or to b-schools in UK? If you wish to study while working, executive MBAs can be a good option. They will keep the money flow coming in while you will get a chance to test your classroom learning instantly at work.

At you age and stage in life, its very important for you to first figure out whether you need an MBA or not- talk to MBAs around you and understand from them how the degree has helped them in their career. You should also go visit a few business schools- all of them have campus visit programs. There is nothing like primary research for forming your own ideas. Although, I will also add that the general purpose of an MBA is to enhance leadership skills and accelerate your career, which aligns with your reasons for seeking this degree.

I'd agree that unless you are sure about doing an MBA this year or even in the near future, there is no point in taking GMAT.

Hi tushartiwari4u,

Great profile and we're really happy to see your accomplishments! It requires a lot of focus and dedication to build strong extra-curriculars along with work. To add to that, both KPMG and TFI are great brands to have on your CV. We've worked with a lot of TFI applicants and they make great success stories for B-school applications.

There are few areas we think you should focus on:
1. GMAT: Even with a great profile, we think that a score of 650 would make application a tad difficult for you. It would definitely help if you could boost your score. A score of 680-700 would be great for ISB, for the US top 5, you should try for even higher.
2. Clarity of goals: With your profile you would it easy to showcase leadership potential. Therefore, what can make or break your application is clarity of short-term and long-term goals.
3. Begin attending roadshows and ad-com sessions: Take time to attend these so that you understand the schools better. It will help you identify strengths in your profile that are aligned with the school requirements.

We also recommend that you try out our B-school selector which can help you identify B-schools that are aligned to your goals here

Feel free to reach out in case of any queries.

Hi Pawan,

The first of the preparatory steps has to be the GMAT - if you are not well versed with the requirements of a typical MBA admissions process, then fyi, GMAT is a key requirement. GMAT Club has a tonne of resources dedicated to GMAT prep.

Your extensive international work experience is going to really differentiate you from other applicants. At the same time admissions committees will want to understand why you wish to do an MBA at this stage in your life and what professional purpose you are trying to achieve by getting one (i.e. your short term and long term career goals).

You should also explore other MBA programs such as IIMA PGPX which will have many more senior applicants like you. I know a lot of applicants, some of them being our clients, who prefer to join IIM Ahmedabad as compared to ISB because the class comprises more mid-level professionals.

I don't exactly know what info you need about MBA admissions but I'd be willing to discuss over a phone call. Reach out at contact@mbadecoder.com

Hi Pawan,

With 9 years of work experience, you will belong to the higher-end of work experience at ISB. To prepare for your application, here's what we recommend:

- The first basic step would be to prepare and give the GMAT/GRE exam. The R1 applications for ISB close on October 15th. Since applying in R1 is always recommended, we suggest you plan to complete GMAT by end-August so that you have a month for your essays and applications
- Talk to alumni and colleagues to chalk out a post-MBA career path. It is even more important for people of higher work-experience to demonstrate clear career goals and how ISB is aligned to them.
- Once you're ready with your GMAT scores, you can begin putting together an application showcasing your international experience and the business impact created during your work-ex.

These are high-level guidelines, that can get you started. Feel free to reach out in case of queries.

I am currently going into 3 rd year business studies Bbs in dcu. I am doing a pure business with the preferred choice of specialising in economics or finance. My profile is that I have 4 internships 1 is a jp Morgan 3 weeks summers internship, Disney also a summer internship for 3 weeks and finally Zurich bank 2 months last summer. My final internship was at Deloitte this year where I spent 9 months working for them.
While in college I was involved in numerous college activities and socties throughout my experience in college. They were as follows football and athletics where is competed for the college. The economics and entrepreneurial society where I actually set up a bakery in college for one year in which I turned a profit and there was no need to have a part time job. I am sitting the gmat in a few months time and have been scoring 650 660 but I am planing on scoring in the 680 690 hopefully. During college I was unsure of what I wanted to do and have now realised real esaste is where I want to go so my choices are lse real esaste, ms real esaste New York university and msc real estate ucl. In my current degree I am averaging a high 2.1 with the hope of getting a first.
Next year I have a year off in college where I must do a year long internship to add to my experience could anyone point me in the right direction is another investment bank okay or should I look at a pure real esaste job to help with my profile when applying. I look forward to your response and hope to tell me if I have a chance of being accepted in or if there are any good programs that I missed out on

Hi Pawan

- The international experience is quite rich and a definite plus for you. The markets you have served are quite diverse as well, so that is a further plus. There aren't many like you applying to ISB, so if you can build a decent app and get a good score, your chances at getting through would be high.
- While your experience is on the higher side, it should be within range at ISB. You will need a decent GMAT score (680+) to be in contention plus of course a strong app
- We need a bit more clarity on the education aspect. Is it that you pursued an engineering diploma followed by further education leading to a Bachelor's in Engineering? Your academic performance in the engineering degree is quite good and adds to your profile.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more queries as needed.

Hi,

I have done my Bachelor's and Masters in Pharmacy. Post completion of my M Pharm, I had worked in Biocon, a leading biopharmaceutical major in Asia, as In Process Quality Assurance Personnel for 2 years (Feb 2014 - Jan 2016). My work was totally related to Quality aspects in Insulin Formulation Plant (Fill Finish Site). Currently, i am working in Mylan, a leading Generic major in the US, as R&D QA Quality Personnel since January 2016. My work here is related to Quality aspects in the development of Formulation. As on today, i hold 3+ years of Career experience.

I can also converse in 6 languages including Spanish. I have been recognised for my outstanding work during the span of 2 years. I have come across a very common fact that B Schools look for diversity also. So I know that I don't have a great score during my 10th & 12th. Will it be a black mark for me during my MBA selection? Will my Pharma Background play a role in differentiating me from the IT guys who are generally in the large crowd of applicants to B-School? Please guide me. Let me know how else I can build up my profile? I aspire to work in management roles in a Pharma Company. But am totally unaware of what kind of roles do people in management handle. The only thing i know is the work is pretty challenging and of course is exciting too. I believe MBA will give me a threshold to start with this role. So am preparing for GMAT to pursue MBA (General Management/Operations) from a reputed institute like ISB/IIM's. My aspiration is to work in Project Management/Portfolio Management/Business Development/General Management Roles in reputed companies like Dr Reddy's/GSK/Novartis. Hope my Idea is clear. :)

Please Evaluate my profile.
Thanks in advance.

Hi nkashyap23,

You are right. B-schools value diversity because diverse candidates bring in a different view point to class discussions and campus culture and your profile definitely counts under this category. We also think that even though you may not be aware of the job responsibilities of people in management in the healthcare/pharma industry, you are definitely taking steps in the right direction. With your background, you should be able to make the transition easily. Every year pharma giants hire from B-schools for PM/BD roles and you would make a good fit. ISB also offers its students a Healthcare Concentration which would equip you for the transition.

To answer your question on how you should build up your profile, remember that B-schools look at holistic profiles. If you think your academics are on the lower side, aim for a higher GMAT score 700+ to make up for it. If your GPA in grad/post-grad was above average, a score of 680 should also be competitive. We feel that you may need a little hand-holding in post-MBA roles and goals. You can start by going over LinkedIn Profiles of people within your post MBA target roles to get better idea of your career goals. Begin reaching out to them and dig deeper into your own MBA story.

A strong application with clearly articulated goals, strong differentiation and a decent GMAT can definitely get you to your goals.

PS. Since your post mentions the IIMs, a small clarification: with 3 years of experience, you would be eligible to apply only at ISB with GMAT. For IIMs, you would need to give GMAT to target the 2 year course, since you would not be eligible for the one-year executive MBA.

Feel free to reach out in case of queries.
