Dear all,

My name Muhammad and I'm from Azerbaijan.I have newly decided to give the GMAT test. I have approximately 6 months to study and I need to score above 740. There are so many resources on the web regarding how to prepare that I'm confused where to start,which strategy to follow. I work full time which means the time I can dedicate to the studying is limited,however, I'll do my best to get the targeted score. Those who have gone through this road,please guide me on how to start,which materials to use,how much time to set aside to get 740+ in 6 months of studying?

Please note that I'm a self-learner. I'm sharing what I'm gonna use in my preparation which I decided from my research that I've done so far.Please help me to improve it.

1)Resources to use:

-Manhattan GMAT;
-Official Guide;
-Veritas (a guy who is a GMAT/GRE tutor recommended me)
-Magoosh website

2)Blogs:
-Gmatclub;
-BeattheGmat

3)Additional reading resources:
-The Economist
-New Yorker
-Bloomberg
-Financial Times
-Wall Street Journale
-New York Times

The guy that I mentioned above (who got 97 percentile on GMAT and graduated from Cornell and Harvard) said that 3-4 hours of studying daily over the 6 months is enough to get your desired score.

Please have a look at these resources. And for those who have an effective day-to-day study plan that helped him/her to score 740+,kindly share it.

Thanks in advance

You need to build the concepts/fundamentals before you jump in solving the problems. You can do so by choosing one of the following ways:
1. In person classes/private tutoring
2. Online classes
3. Self paced online preparatory course
4. Book heavy approach

Whatever you choose, make sure that you choose one. Because GMAT tests you on some concepts and fundamentals that you can learn from a course. Most of the preparatory companies including ours offer a free trial of our course. You can take the trial and see if the course suits your needs.

In addition to the preparatory material, buy the Official Guides(both the Official Guide and the Verbal Review), Question Pack 1 and the 4 official mock CATs. They should be an indispensable part of your preparation.

You need close to 3 months to prepare well for the GMAT.
1. Understand the concepts and fundamentals before jumping into problem solving
2. Solve full length CATs including AWA and IR. You can get two free GMAT Prep mock CATs and can purchase two more from mba.com
3. Make sure you solve the official questions from the Official Guide

Hi Mehemmed,

It sounds like you're just starting out. Is that true? Have you done any studying so far?

If you're just beginning, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can download 2 for free from www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a bit of practice first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the general content and question types first, then that's fine - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. A FULL CAT takes about 4 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can discuss the results.

Hi Muhammad,

You may want to look at Magoosh's six month study plan:

https://magoosh.com/gmat/2012/6-month-g ... -schedule/

It seems to be about what you want, as far as time frame and amount of time studying per day/week. It also breaks up what you have to do, not quite day-by-day, but at least week-by-week.

Hi Mehemmed,

No worries!
You can surely hit at least 49 or above just like 90% of our students as long as you follow our study guide properly.

Since we are specialised in quant only, we can give you advice on quant.

In order to hit 700, Q49 and V35 is the best combination.
In order to hit Q740, you should score Q49-50/V40-42.
If your basic math skills are solid, it will take only 1-2 months to hit Q49 and maximum 3 months to hit Q50.
Even if your math skills are poor, that's fine. We have Math Review required for GMAT math.
Given the time you can prepare for the next exam, 740+ is very achievable as long as you are well focused.

We understand that you are confused with many resources here and there. In fact, GMAT is a logic test, not general math test. That's why students majoring in engineering or math have hard time in improving math scores. You should learn 'logic' to solve GMAT math. Hence, you need to learn the logic to hit a high score in GMAT which you can learn from our course and the conventional method to solve GMAT questions takes very long to improve. That is, you need to use resources most relevant to the current type of GMAT questions to hit Q49-51. If you study with us, you don't need any extra materials apart from ours.

From our course, you will learn our unique approaches and solving questions using the approaches: Variable approach of DS and IVY approach of PS. With our unique approaches, you can solve any questions that normally take 4 minutes in 1 minute and 30 seconds, and 2-minute question in 30 seconds. Moreover, you can solve 100% of DS questions with Variable approach and 30-40% of PS questions with IVY approach, which can boost your score.

If you would like to try our approaches, Please try Trial Pack (4 hour lesson) that reveal our secret approaches of DS+PS core theory that you have never seen. You can test whether you like them or not before you enroll.

Additionally, the below are useful articles featured in GMAT Club for your reference. This will be helpful for you.
