I don't have much expertise in admissions. So, I don't have much to offer regarding what GMAT score you need for getting into your target schools. I do have expertise in GMAT prep, however. So, I can say that you can for sure increase your GMAT score to 740+. You just have to prepare effectively.

I would also suggest that the reason your actual GMAT score was not a high as your official practice test scores has to do with the way you prepared. What likely occurred is that, somehow, you prepared for what the GMAT has done in the past, for instance, on the official practice tests, rather than for what you might see on the GMAT today.

So, the bottom line is that, by preparing more effectively, you will get better results.

For a comprehensive discussion of how to prepare effectively to increase your GMAT verbal score, see these posts.

How to Score High on GMAT Verbal

Three Key Practice Tips for Mastering GMAT Verbal

Thanks a lot, Marty! This does make a lot of sense, and to be honest, I never thought of it this way. I'll keep this in mind if I plan on re-taking the test again :)

Gratz on the Q50. If you decide to re-take, consider perhaps working with a study buddy whom you can teach Quant in exchange for Verbal.

How to get a V40 or higher on the GMAT? What about a V51?

It's difficult to come across a reliable person who shares the same prep timeline as yours. At least that's the difficulty I faced while preparing for the test. Moreover, self-paced courses don't really help imo. But this is something I can try for sure if I re-take the test again. Thanks!

TL; DR: I scored a 710 (Q50, V36, IR8) today, same as what I scored 4 months ago (710: Q50, V36, IR7).
_____________

Before moving forward to my sob story, I'd like to thank bb for creating gmatclub. It made my preparation so affordable and convenient. Moreover, connecting with others and reading how others approach a particular topic is fascinating and very intriguing. I'd also like to thank GMATNinja souvik101990 and egmat for helping my verbal scores reach the stage where it is right now. And a special mention to the folks at GMATBusters for having such a welcoming TG group.

I'm a 27 y/o male from India. I took my first attempt at GMAT in December 2021 and scored 710 (Q50, V36, IR7). I'm aware of the fact that I belong to a somewhat overrepresented background, and since I knew that crossing the "740" barrier would help my case (since I want to apply to the top 15 MBA programs), I decided to retake the test. I took e-GMAT's course and even joined their Last Mile program (which didn't really help me much, to be honest). But overall, my SC abilities did improve in these 4.5 months. I thought I was ready to have another go at it and took the exam today. I was so disappointed to see the same score (barring the marginal improvement in IR  which I'm really holding on to right now).

P.S.: Don't trust the GMATPrep mock scores.

Here's a little about my background:
> Undergrad: B.Com (Hons) in Accounting and Finance
> Professional Qualifications: Chartered Accountant (CA) and Company Secretaries (CS)
> Work Ex: 5 years (Corporate Finance) in a Medium-sized Pipe manufacturing company
> Extra-curricular: highly involved with NGOs and have done a lot of volunteering; working on my first book (i.e., not published yet)
> Post MBA Goal: Would like to work in the Venture Capital industry, but I do understand that the competition is tough so truth be told, I'd be okay with working in consultancy as long as there's a window of opportunity to pivot to VC at a later stage (e.g., as it is in case of M&A consulting)

I'm worried that maybe this is my limit, although deep down I feel I can do better. But at the same time, if a 710 is good enough for me to get into a top 15 program that's great for the kind of post MBA goal I have, I'd be happy to cut my losses and I'd cherish my score.

I feel that if I apply for the ED round of, say, NYU, I'd have a better chance to get into the program. But again, I'm not sure.

I would love to get some inputs on what should I do next? Should I try on boosting my score (which again isn't guaranteed) by taking some course, or should I start working on my essays and recommendations with the score and profile I have?

I'd also love some input on the programs I should look at? I really want to join a school that has great opportunities in Finance after graduating (the ones I'm aware of are NYU, LBS, CBS), because when I used the gmatclub profile evaluation tool, it mentioned that I have an above average chance at NYU, however, after talking to admission consultants in December, I was not so sure.

Thank you so much for taking out time to read my sob story and to advise me on what to do next!

P.S.: I'm a lurker so I'm not sure if this is the right section of the forum. Kindly let me know if this post belongs to some other section. Cheers!

Hello mainbhiankit , hope you are well

While there is no guarantee for the eventual outcome of your candidacy at NYU, LBS, CBS, I think with your GMAT score and some stellar essays you could get onto waitlists at best at these schools. LBS seems more doable than the other two but you have to hedge your risk with that too. The competition for your demographic and profile-type is fierce and therefore you must target attaining differentiation in all aspects of your profile. I recently talked to someone with a similar profile as yours but with a 770 GMAT score. The person is on NYU Stern's waitlist currently but got an admit from CBS. If you are willing to give GMAT another shot, a 750+ score could help your case else you would have to settle for slightly lower ranked schools.

If you are willing to venture into consulting post-MBA, I encourage you to explore other schools in the US Top 15 or INSEAD.

I am attaching some verbal pdfs that I curated and used for my preparation in 2019 to improve from V35 to V42 (with self study), that might help you. Maintaining an error log in an excel sheet for the question types that you get wrong really helps. Keep referring back to this log and try to register why did you not get the logic right in the previous attempt.

Best wishes to you

Hey mainbhiankit

As you pointed out with your score admission would be tough but it's not out of the question.

In particular you'll want to:
[*] Apply AS SOON as applications open, so that you're among the very first
[*] Be willing to opt for things like binding early action at top 15 schools such as Fuqua and Darden
[*] Consider programs such as the Columbia J-term

You may well have a shot. We'd be happy to put you in touch with people with profiles similar and worse than yours who were able to get admits into top 15 programs by following the strategy we outlined above.

Note, by the way, that in your work experience you can count your articleship experience as well, so that'll be a bit of a boost to your profile.

We'd be happy to set up a call so you can talk through with one of our advisors.
