tkilua - I am sorry to hear your verbal score is stuck at a low level. At a V15 score level, you need either a tutor or a comprehensive online course focussed on verbal. Please visit the review section to research some of the best available courses in the market. Most importantly, taking the GMAT by the end of 2019 is NOT a realistic goal. At your score level, you need 3 to 6 months to get a 700+ score.

Hi tkilua,

Given that you scored V12 on your most recent practice exam, you will need to follow a study plan that allows you to learn GMAT verbal from the ground up. Also, the process of significantly improving your verbal skills will take longer than just one month. Thus, as has been suggested, you should give yourself more time to study and then take the GMAT at a later date. If you’d like more specific advice on how to improve your verbal skills, feel free to reach back out. Lastly, you may find it helpful to read the following articles:

Get MGMAT Verbal foundation and build up from there. Better still a comprehensive online course will also do.
Your basics in verbal is not clear

Hello, I am looking for some advice to increasing my score from high 400s to 700.

I took a prep course around May and after studying for around 6 months I took the GMAT for the first time in end of September was I scored around 450 (42 Q / 11 V).

I restarted studying around 10 hrs a week beginning mid October and since then I have done 4 practise exams:
Nov 9: 530 (GMAT CAT 1 Redo 48 Q / 17 V)
Nov 16: 590 (GMAT Cat 2 Redo 48 Q / 24 V)
Nov 30: 530 (GMAT CAT 3 47 Q / 16 V)
Dec 7: 480 (GMAT CAT 4 48 Q / 12 V)

Although the scores on the CATs that I have been redoing has increased, I noticed that for new CATs I have not improved and am still around the high 400s - low 500 range. My weaknesses are in verbal and I was hoping to get some insights on what I might be able to do to improve this score.

Currently, I am studying verbal by doing questions from the GMAT club. I go by topics and try to do the question from the OG(2009-2020). I am getting most of the sub-600 questions correct (roughly 9 correct out of 10) and for 600-700 questions (roughly 6 correct out of 10).

I am planning to do the exam before end of 2019.

In order to get a 700 overall, your Verbal has to be at least 34, and that's only if you can get a perfect 51 on Quant. More realistically, your Verbal would need to at least be in the 37-38 range to score a 700.

You have a long way to go, and it's not likely that you'll get there by the end of the year. But you CAN get there. Stop doing Verbal practice problems for now - you're not going to get as much out of them before you've learned the basic content. Pick up the MPrep Foundations of GMAT Verbal book: https://www.amazon.com/Foundations-GMAT ... 1937707016 . You may also want to enlist a tutor with a lot of experience in Verbal. Either way, master the essentials first. Good luck!

Hi tkilua,

To start, while the most realistic CATs available are the 6 from GMAC, retaking a CAT that you've already taken is NOT a realistic way to assess your skills - since you will likely see some 'repeat' questions that you have already faced. Unfortunately, seeing even a couple of repeats can 'throw off' the Scoring Algorithm and impact your pacing, energy levels, fatigue, etc. (meaning that they would likely all appear to be better than they actually are). Thankfully, the CATs from Kaplan, MGMAT and Veritas are all 'close enough' to the real thing that they will provide you with a relatively realistic score assessment (assuming that you correctly take the CAT in a realistic fashion) - so you should plan to use NEW CATs from any of those sources next.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) What other study materials besides that course have you used so far?
2) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
3) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

Assuming that your current 'ability level' is right around 500, raising a 500 to the point that you can consistently score 700+ will likely require at least another 3 months of consistent, guided study - and you'll have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. Thankfully, the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam, so you CAN train to score at a higher level.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich
