Hi everyone,
To introduce myself, I'm a 28 year old with 5 years of IT Consulting experience in healthcare. I've been studying for the GMAT for about 5 months now and have set a time to schedule the exam at the end of the month (Feb, 27th to be exact). My goal is to score over 700s and looking to apply to B-school during the fall.
I've taken about 10+ practice tests up to this point (
MGMAT and GMATPrep) and have hit the 690 multiple times. In all of these practice test, my Quant score is consistently 47 and above and my Verbal always lags behind at around 28-36. I know that Verbal is my weak spot, but even after practicing countless problems, I don't see that much improvement. Here are the break down of my scores
7/31/16 GMAT Prep (Default Exam 1):
590 (Q: 47 V: 35)8/17/16 GMAT Prep (Default Exam 2):
580 (Q: 46, V: 24)8/28/16
MGMAT (CAT 1):
620 (Q: 45 V: 31)9/14/16
MGMAT (CAT 2):
600 (Q: 43 V: 31)9/28/16
MGMAT (CAT 3):
630 (Q: 44 V: 32)10/21/16 GMAT Prep (Exam Pack 2 Exam 5):

600 (Q: 48 V: 25)11/3/16 GMAT Prep (Exam Pack 1 Exam 3):
680 (Q: 49 V: 33)11/10/16 GMAT Prep (Exam Pack 1 Exam 4):
630 (Q: 49 V: 27)12/6/16 Official Exam
650 (Q:47 V: 31)12/16/16 GMAT Prep (Exam Pack 1 Exam 3-Retake)
660 (Q: 50 V: 30)Took some time off for holidays
1/7/17 GMAT Prep (Default Exam 1-Retake)
690 (Q: 49 V: 34)1/16/17 GMAT Prep (Exam Pack 2 Exam 6-Retake)
690 (Q: 48 V: 36)2/9/17 GMAT Prep (Exam Pack 2 Exam 5-Retake)
640 (Q: 50 V: 26)As you can see, my Verbal Score are erratic.
My verbal breakdown:
Sentence Correction: I would say that this is the section that I am the most comfortable with. I've usually score in the 77 percentile in all of my practice exams. I am comfortable with most of the grammar rules. I do need to work on idioms and the occasional logical predication. Most of the time, I am able to get through these question under the allotted time.
Critical Reasoning: This is a weaknesses of mine. First of all, I am super slow on these questions. It takes me about a minute or a bit longer to full understand the situation and I find myself constantly going back to re-read the argument. I find myself lacking a lot of confidence at these problems and tend to rush because I feel like I am taking a lot of time. Sometimes assumptions jump out at me, and other times, I can't pinpoint what exactly I am targeting. This is one of my weakest areas as I score around 50% or below.
Reading Comprehension: This is my BIGGEST weakness. Again, similar to Critical Reasoning, I am very slow. I read through the passage and I always feel like I have a general idea of whta the passage is saying. When I look through the questions, I again find myself rereading a lot, even though I thought I understood most of the passages. I am working on active reading through the passages, and I am even slower.
Practice Materials (Verbal Only):
OG 17: Done all of the verbal problems,
OG Verbal Workbook: Done of the verbal problems
Magoosh: Just started
Magoosh verbal
With that being said, I feel like I have a big problem with the fundamentals of reading. Reading stuff isn't something I do a lot or like to do. Because I don't do it a lot, I sense that I tend to read through passages without retaining any information about what I just read. It's a terrible habit, but I am really working to fix it. Besides that, I don't know which part of the puzzle I am missing? What else would help? What kinds of tips should I be trying.
Thanks a lot for your input!
