MGMAT CAT4. first 8 quant questions-> all 700-800 level-> all correct, est. percentile is 97. Got the 9th question wrong and it suddenly plummeted to 71. Can this be correct?
It's hard to say, since the GMAC doesn't release information to us about the exact numbers involved in their algorithm. We do know the general shape of the algorithm, though, and our practice tests were recently looked over by Larry Rudner (
https://www.manhattanprep.com/gmat/blog ... -endorsed/), who deemed them accurate.
The changes in your percentile as you get questions right or wrong will be substantially larger at the beginning of the test than at the end, both on our practice tests and on the official GMAT. But correct answers at the beginning count for more as well - if you're going to end up with a 99th percentile score, performing consistently at that level will quickly wipe out the effects of any single wrong answer. You can safely miss a
lot of problems on the GMAT.
