Hi all,

Planning to apply for a MSc Finance / Financial Economics / Investment&Wealth Management this year (Sept '21 intake). I have a strong preference for UK or European programs in order to secure a career in London or in the European Union.

Nationality: Mexican
Age: 23

Undergrad Program: BSc Economics in CIDE (Top 1 Economics University in Mexico, or maybe 2 depending on the ranking)
Ranking: first place and graduated with honours
Extra:
-Semester abroad in Lyon2: Master in Money, Banking and Finance
-I speak four languages: Spanish, English & French (advanced), German (intermediate)

GPA: 4
GMAT: Haven’t presented the exam but expecting 680-700

Work Experience: Worked 1 year at the Central Bank of Mexico (of which 6 months were an internship), currently working at BofA in FI/FX Strategy Research.
Teaching: teached Time Series applications in R during a semester at CIDE, as teacher assistant
Research: BSc thesis about finance

Target Schools: HEC, St. Gallen, Imperial, Bocconi, ESSEC, LSE

How are my chances looking?
And how much will my low GMAT may hurt me in these top programs?
Is it worth applying later (last round) to get a higher score in GMAT?
What should be by back up for these schools?

Thank you in advance.

Hi LizJo,

You have a pretty decent profile.

I’d like to begin by reflecting on your Mexican nationality. Since schools are on the lookout for enhancing their diversity, you would be a great addition to a diverse cohort. Not just this, your comprehension of 4 distinct languages would add to augmenting the diversity of a school.

Your GPA- 4 is just perfect. Moreover, graduating from a top-ranking school in your undergrad is a pretty strong point as it levels up your profile.

Given your interest to pursue your masters in the finance discipline, your semester abroad in Lyon2- Master in Money, Banking, and Finance- complements it well. You shall even highlight any other subjects, courses, or projects (for instance- your BSc thesis on finance) that you undertook to address your passion in finance & its related fields.

Great to see that you have work experience in the finance sector. You shall lay emphasis on the kind of work and roles you’ve undertaken in your application to shed light on how your understanding of finance-related matters has developed over time.

Your experience in Teaching would as an assistant would be looked upon as your extracurricular activity. Thus, you are required to focus more on highlighting such activities as they help convey your diverse skill set. Through extracurriculars, you can even demonstrate areas/initiatives where you held a position of responsibility.

You can stand a chance of securing an admit into your target schools- HEC, St. Gallen, Imperial, Bocconi, ESSEC, LSE. Here’s a category breakup of these schools-
Competitive- Bocconi, Imperial, ESSEC,& LSE
Dream- HEC & St. Gallen

Apart from these, you may even consider these schools: IE, ESCP, ESADE, & WHU.

Further, you can strengthen your application with a 680+ GMAT, and ideally, you must apply for Round 1 because the earlier you apply, the more favorable are the chances.

Overall your profile is good, however, you need a well-defined action plan to prepare your application materials. Since you’re planning to apply for this year’s intake, you may wish to consider assistance to frame a meticulous application.

Thus, if you are looking for an expert touch on your application and increase your chances of winning an admit into your target school, you can check our flagship service All-In-One Solution through the link given below to gain insights into our working of the essay editing process.

Applying to Nova SBE as first choice, Catolica-Lisbon second choice, ISCTE third choice. All located in Portugal and all MSc in Finance.

Current University: University of San Francisco (tier 1)
Major: Business Management, Minor: Legal Studies
Nationality: USA
Age: will be 22
GMAT/GRE: Not taken yet (what score would I need?)
GPA: 3.4/4.0

Notable experience (not all):
Intern at economic center 6 months - received certification from IRS
Volunteer at technology center 6 months
Online course in Organizational Analysis from Stanford University
Exchange program in Spain 1 semester

Given my profile and desired schools, any thoughts or predictions on admission? Any advice to raise my chances?
The programs say a GRE/GMAT are not required but can be included to enhance admission...would it hurt more to not have a score to submit vs an average score?

Thank you!!

Hi cmkinca711,

Your profile looks decent.

Your GPA (3.4) is quite satisfactory.

Although you don't have full-time work experience, internship certainly adds value to your profile and professional exposure.

Further, you shall add more to the aspect of extracurriculars just like your volunteering experience at the technology center. For instance, you can highlight any leadership roles or initiatives that you undertook to convey your skills and interests outside the classroom.

And the online course in Organizational Analysis from Stanford University is a great feature of your profile. Not just this, the exchange program in Spain is also quite notable in terms of your international exposure and learning.

Reflecting on your dubiety of the GMAT exam, I'd suggest taking up the GMAT exam because the Masters in Finance is a program designed for those having a strong quantitative background. Moreover, schools also prefer candidates who have achieved a good GMAT score. Thus, as a testament to your quantitative abilities, you shall take the GMAT/GRE.

Additionally, with a well-drafted application, you can make your way to your target schools - Nova SBE, Catolica-Lisbon, & ISCTE.

Hence, if you’re planning to apply for the 2021 intake, you can check our flagship service- All-In-One Solution to see how we assist applicants in preparing polished application materials (essays, LORs, resume, etc.).

Hello everyone!

I am planning to apply to several MFin/MiM/MS this winter/spring. I am in kind of a weird spot since I have 2 years of full-time work experience. I could have worked for 1-2 years more and try to apply for an MBA, but I would like to take a break from the professional life and experience the US/UK a bit. I still want to go for a FT MBA/PT MBA/EMBA down the road, but that’s not relevant for this discussion. Please help evaluate my profile, and beware the long post!

Background:
27, male, Southeast Asian (planning to get an MBA at 32-ish, or at 36-ish if I go for EMBA)

Education:
1. UG: Top 120-150 university according to the QS, in Northern Europe. BSc in Economics. GPA: 3.49/4 (I should have studied harder, but I was too focused on prepping for my internships).
2. GMAT: 730 (just make the cut at some programs. Should I aim for 750-770?)

Work experience:
1. 0.5 years (recently joined) at a Big 4 company (Deal Advisory). Assisting companies in performing due diligence for their M&A deals.
2. 1.5 years at another Big 4 company (also in Deal Advisory). Supported companies in developing financial models and performing valuations for M&A and capital raising purposes. Promoted to Senior Associate after 1 year.
3. 2nd internship: M&A at a Big 4 company, closed one deal during the internship.
4. 1st internship: Risk Advisory at a Big 4 company (not again!).

Extracurricular activities:
1. Sports at work: 1st prize in intra-firm, five-a-side soccer tournament; represented my Big 4 company in 2 soccer tournaments at the city level
2. Sports at university: played soccer for the school team. Helped the captain in organizing weekly trainings and friendly matches.
3. Others: founded an investment club at my university and recruited 12 members. We used a simulated investment fund to make investments. Results: 5% gain over 3 months, which was 2% higher than the S&P500 during the same period
4. 5 math prizes (bronze/silver) at various national math competitions in Asia/Australia – this was during high school so I’m not sure if it is still relevant.

Other relevant information
1. Submitted a CV for review to LBS (Master of Finance) and Cambridge (Master of Finance) and got a nod from both programs to apply. Not sure if that’s a big deal
2. LoR: 3 strong recommendation letters from work from 3 Directors. 2 professors also agreed to refer me, but I don’t think their recommendation will be strong

Career path post-graduation
In decreasing order of preference: BB banks M&A/coverage groups > MBB > other front office roles at BB banks (asset management, debt capital market, equity capital market, corporate banking etc.) and asset management firms/hedge funds. Looking to work in either NYC/London (slight preference for NYC).

Target programs
Europe
1. Oxford (Said) – MSc Financial Economics
2. Cambridge (Judge) – Master of Finance
3. LSE – MSc Finance + MSc Accounting & Finance
4. LBS – Masters in Financial Analysis. I wrote up there that I submitted a CV review to the Masters in Finance program, but I learned that the average work experience is 6 years. Therefore, I’m going to play it safer and go with the MFA program
5. INSEAD – Master in Management (not sure if I should apply to this program, but their curriculum looks very interesting - where I get to study in many of their campuses).
US
1. MIT (Sloan) – Master of Finance
2. Stanford – MS Management Science and Engineering
3. Columbia (CBS) – MS Accounting and Fundamental Analysis
4. Yale (SOM) – MMS Asset Management
5. Duke (Fuqua) – Master in Quantitative Management (not a feeder to finance jobs but

Hi ryanhedgehog,

You have a pretty good profile.

Your GPA- 3.49 and GMAT score -730 are good to go.
Instead of aiming for a higher GMAT score, you shall allot time to prepare your application.

On the note of work experience, it's great that you have 2 years of full-time work-ex. in two Big 4 companies that can be a big highlight in your application. Also, you have undertaken 2 internships as well. Thus, professional exposure is clearly a strong aspect of your profile giving you leverage over other applicants.

Further, you've been actively involved in extracurriculars as well. Be it winning prizes or finding the investment club at your university, are again solid pointers to showcase your proactiveness in extracurricular activities and your skillset.

MiM being an alternative of MBA and an early-career master's degree, you shall step forward to undertake the MiM program. You would be deemed ineligible for a lot of MiM programs due to your age. So it’d be better to opt for MFin. in that case.

As for your targeted schools, You might not be eligible for INSEAD because of their age eligibility. But, LBS MFin can be a good call for you.

Also, you can definitely target most of the schools in the dream category. While applying to those schools you’d need to focus on your financial experiences and how you have developed your understanding there and highlight the same in your applications.
Moreover drafting a strong application is going to be pertinent in that case, as they look for a holistic view of their applicants. Try to apply in round 1 of the applications, especially for the UK based schools, as it greatly improves your chances.

Since you are confused about targeting the program and school, I’d suggest taking a profile evaluation to better understand your profile’s strengths and weaknesses.

We have had 35 admits in LBS this year and a good amount of admits in other schools as well, so we’ll be happy to help you out through our strategy sessions.

I want to work full time the country of my education and probably settle there, which countries do you recommend apart from Canada and Australia
Looking forward to make a long term career in Investment Banking or Investment Management

Any opinions/feedback welcome

Hey sonkarnishant

Your profile looks pretty good and I must say that you have taken a lot of self-initiatives in your academic and career journey. Clearing CFA exams is no easy task, so congratulations on achieving that the school really appreciates the same.

You have a strong orientation towards finance and the CFA shows that you’ll go above and beyond in the academics, which is something that can be highlighted in your applications.

Your work experiences look good as well, they are all in the finance field which makes your resume relevant and pretty cohesive. Although you’d have to let us know which brands you have worked with, as they make a pretty big difference in the application.

Brands will let us know what value you have created and it is pertinent to showcase what impact you’ve made in your position- what deals you have cracked and so, make sure you highlight that in your application while adding relevant figures and numbers to it.

SRCC is a great college so that strengthens your profile. Though, you haven’t mentioned the program that you’re targeting, but MFin and MBA are going to be a great fit for you.

The colleges you can target depends greatly on your GMAT/GRE scores and 680 is a decent score for Judge Business School, IE, ESSEC, ESADE, SDA but if you try to target a score above 700+ that would be on a better side, complemented with a strong application.

You can target most of the schools you have mentioned with it.
Apart from the schools, you have mentioned you can also target better schools such as LBS, Oxford, HEC, RSM, and other top schools. Although you’d need to score 710+ in your GMAT to target these schools.

Most of these European countries have good immigration laws, so if you target schools in any of the good EU countries, you can achieve a substantial Return of Investment.

Apart from Canada and Australia, you can target countries like Ireland, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, and so on.

So all in all your profile looks good and if paired with a strong application, it can help you get into your target school.

To know more about how you can target these schools, you can book a strategy session with us and we can help you get into your dream school.

Hello everyone,
I wanted to apply for MSc finance programmes at LSE, LBS(MFA), Imperial, Oxford(MFE) and UCL. Hope you could have a look at my profile and see if I have decent chances if I apply in the second round.

I recently graduated in BSc Computer Science from UCL( Ranked #1 university in London and #7 in the world according to QS 2020) with a 2:1 honours classification. I also had a minor in finance and scored a 1st(70+) in the finance modules.
I will be taking GMAT in 2 months and I'm scoring 680-700 in mocks with initial prep and I'm hoping to push my score to 730 by November.
Being a computer science major I have had a software engineering internship at KPMG and I can code proficiently in Python, C, R and Javascript. I was also a student partner with Microsoft for 2 years and hosted competitions and workshops in Canary Wharf.
I also had an opportunity to work on a year long quant finance project with an Asset Management start up in London during my second year of university and this project made me want to pursue finance for further education and also as a career. I wrote a 10000 word thesis on using artificial neural networks to forecast the Foreign Exchange Market. I gained basic financial knowledge through my minor in finance and online courses on valuation and financial markets.
I am also enrolled for CFA level 1 in February 2021 and I intend to turn in my masters application before the CFA exam. I also aim to bag an Investment banking/ management internship for summer 2021.
LSE and Imperial Prefer 1st class degrees but also accept 2:1 classification if the GMAT score is decent.
Hope I could get a review on my profile as I have until January to improve. Thanks!

Hi guys, I'm an average student from an average university in Bangalore, India. I'm looking to apply for Msc Finance in Germany. I thought Frankfurt School of finance and management would be good but I don't see people talking very good about it in forums like Wallstreet Oasis. Do you think FSFM is a good idea or if not, where else could I apply in Germany.

Info:-

Bangalore University, GPA - 7.5, BBA Finance. CFA L1 candidate + 2 coursera courses and CFA investment foundations program.
GMAT - Yet to be taken,
1 research, 1 wealth management internship in not so well-known firms, 1 internship in quant finance on-going, again, not a well-known firm and a few virtual experience programs from Insidesherpha.
I've participated in competitions at my college, if its a group event, I'm the the one in charge of my team unanimously.
I've volunteered for community service for about 2 semesters.
Post masters I'd like to work in Asset Management industry and then try and get into a hedgefund.
I would like to work while studying so I could sustain my expenses and fees and I'd like to earn a lot of money so I could buy homes and have my own family.

suggestions/tips/advice most welcome

Hi everyone!

I hope you are well. I just wanted to ask you if you could tell me, in all honesty, what are my odds of getting into an MSc Finance at the following universities:

-MSc Finance Bocconi
-MSc Finance ESSEC
-MSc Finance EDHEC
-MSc Finance Imperial

My profile:
-3rd Year BSc Political Economy student at KCL (on track for a 1st)
-Taken modules like Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Advanced Macroeconomics, Mathematics for Economics, Econometrics etc.
-Undergraduate Research Fellow
-Worked as research assistant and research intern at a research institute (field of linguistic and computational analysis)
-Took admin roles (e.g. secretary or VP) in different Uni societies (Asset Management, Financing Group Society, Political Economy)
-Still have to take the GMAT (simulations between 690-720 with Q47 V44)

On the same note, would I have more chances of getting into a masters in management at the same universities? Would my profile match best an MSc in Economics (I know that ultimately the choice comes down to what I would prefer to do but I would still like to hear your opinion)

You have a good profile to be fit into the desired schools. For all the mentioned schools average GMAT is 620-680. So, if you get 680+ GMAT score, you will get a good amount scholarship also.

Yes you can apply to MiM also, you have to explain clearly in your SOP/Essays. All the best.

Hello everyone,

Honestly, I have never been fond of these types of posts because I understand how difficult it is to evaluate people off of a one-paragraph profile. That being said, I seriously have a lack of confidence which is holding me back from getting my applications ready to go. I would really appreciate your response and for taking the time to review my background.

Firstly, why MSc?
Honestly, I've been 50-50 about applying. I know a lot of you will instantly say I shouldn't go forward unless I'm 100%, but with the pandemic, it has severely altered the job market and it has me uncertain about a lot of things. I have a passion for finance, particularly equity research or S&T , or WM (pretty much anything buy-side that doesn't work 90+ hours). Additionally, as I will mention in my stats section, I go to a state school in New York which is a top state school, but, nonetheless, is still a state school. At my current internship, I'm the only guy at a non-target school and pretty much have 0 chance of competing with Harvard, Wharton, and Stanford applications at top firms. Getting a MSc or MiF could give me the chance to study at a top school for a year or two and allow me to compete with other target school graduates when the job market fully recovers. I hope this makes sense.

Background
I transferred from one school to my current school in my second semester of sophomore year. At my current school, I have a 3.71 GPA (graduating with about 59 credits from this school). At my previous school, I culminated 67 credits with a 3.20 GPA (I know, this might destroy my chances at any top school). I was pretty depressed and did not feel challenged (sounds generic, but it's true) hence my low GPA at this school.
I will be graduating with honors at my current school, likely Summa Cum Laude. If they look at my CGPA with the combined GPAs, I believe it should be around a 3.42. This is my main concern. I don't know how they will look at this GPA.

GRE- taking it very soon, expecting 167+ on Quant & 164+ on Verbal, based upon practice exams.

Founded a web design and marketing company, grossed 450k+ in 2 years. This was my Freshman/Sophomore year of university. Coordinated a team of six off-shore developers as well as a product marketing team, completing over 92 small to medium scale projects.
In my junior year, I started day trading equity and options. Turned about 25k into 100k in about 8 months. Still managing this portfolio currently, though I will begin full-time day trading again once school starts.
This summer, I interned for a boutique hedge fund in NYC. I did equity and economic research for the fund.
Vice President of a 300+ member Investment association at my college
Senior portfolio analyst at my previous school's investment fund
Honors thesis papers in the process of being written
One LOR will be the MD of the fund I'm working at.
Not sure if this helps but I'm a first-gen student and basically grew up in poverty throughout my childhood. I am white, but my father is Irish and my mom is Latino and Native American (weird, I know).

The schools I'm looking at. Please excuse the large range of schools.
Columbia University MFE
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sloan)
University of Chicago (Booth)
Harvard (not even sure if this would work because I believe it would have to be the 2+2 program)
Princeton
NYU Stern's Quant Finance Program (not ideal because it's half in Shanghai)
Also, LSE and Oxford but these schools are also a reach.

Main question: Am I out of my mind to consider applying to these schools with my subpar GPA?

Any bit of advice is appreciated. You can tear my stats apart, no hard feelings.
I really am looking to assess my options and any suggestions could help better my chances at top masters programs.
Thank you again.

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to apply for a 2021 intake MiF program. My objective is to pursue a Master in Finance from a well-known business school to secure a job in S&T/HF in Europe.

Nationality / Age:
Brazilian / 22 y.o.

GMAT:720 (target - mock test averaging 720)

Full Time:

Internships:
2) 8 month internship at a brazilian credit Hedge Fund (+1B USD - biggest credit HF in the region);
3) 8 month internship at a swiss startup in London.

Educational Background:
1) Business Management in Brazil (non-target school, but well ranked regionally (top 20 market, below 50 for academic prestige)) - Graduated in 2019
CGPA 3.89 (9.73/10) highest grade of the class

Thanks for taking the time to evaluate this profile. I’m eager to receive your feedback.

Hey Pinloo4

I’d like to say that you have a pretty strong profile.

Your GMAT score of 720 and GPA 3.89 is great, reflecting your strong academic suit.

Besides, you must consider the competition you will face from applicants of top-ranking colleges. However, being from Brazil, your ethnicity will help, as schools are always on the lookout for people from different nationalities to improve the diversity of the cohort

Emphasizing international exposure in London can work out as quite a strong point in your application as schools value profiles with international experience. You can talk about the work you did during your internship. Aim to highlight projects and make sure you include the skills you developed during that time.

Given your strong interest in Finance, it’s great to see that your work-ex is complementing your interest in the chosen field, be it working with a big 4 or undertaking internships.
It certainly would convey your defined interest in Finance and, more specifically, the brand name of the big 4 company and the kind of roles you’ve taken up would further solidify your application as M.Fin schools are pretty appreciative of applicant’s work-ex in the finance domain.

Even the experience of working in your family business, a go-getter attitude, self-learning capabilities, and drive (among other things), if properly explained, will be a good differentiating point for your application.

Although you’ve highlighted some extracurriculars like social work in an NGO, working as a teaching assistant, winning Business Challenge., it would really be instrumental to showcase the impact you could create by going above and beyond in your endeavors- like leading teams and developing your skill set along the way.

Talking about the schools you are targeting are pretty competitive wherein

Oxford, HEC, St. Gallen, LBS come under the dream category, while LSE, ETH Zurich, WHU, Bocconi would fall under the competitive category.

Though since your profile is pretty strong, make sure you ace every part of the application (essays, GMAT, LOR, resume) showcasing your passion for finance competently you can have a good chance in most of your target schools.

Lastly, as you’re planning to apply for the 2021 intake, you must be seeking an expert touch on your application materials to leave no stone unturned for your application in your target schools.
