Hi everyone,

I am a 22y old male from India. I completed my Bachelors in Business Administration with a dual-specialization in Accounting&Finance and Marketing from a top-3 school (for BBA) in my country. The obvious issue is my CGPA is low at 6/10 (around 2.5-2.7/4). I have cleared CFA L1 and am a candidate for L2.

I haven't taken the GMAT yet, but I believe I can score in the 700-750 range.

I'd like to target schools in the UK, but I'm open to the rest of Europe and Canada as well. In fact, I would love to get your insight on which regions would better suit my profile.

I have very strong extracurriculars, have held multiple positions of responsibility and leadership throughout undergrad (even in school, if that matters). Imagine MUNs, college newsletter, various clubs, etc.

I have about a total of 9 months of cumulative internship experience (including Big4 and 2 leading national names) and would complete 1 year of relevant full-time work experience before I apply.

My plan is to work in Asset Management post MiF.

Note - I'm putting up this profile review very early on in my journey, and am targeting the Fall '22 intake. So please let me know where I stand considering I fill up the gaps present currently, i.e. clear CFA L2, score 700-750 on the GMAT, complete 1 year of full-time experience.

My major question would be - do I stand a chance at top schools given my GPA? If not, what kind of schools should I target?

Thanks a lot!

Hello everyone, I am from Colombia. I want to apply to IE's Master in Finance and it is my top choice school.

Degree: Engineering (2.8/4 GPA, my GPA is pretty bad so I'm worried this will keep me away from any top Masters in Finance. IE is my dream school.)
GMAT: 660 (minimum for IE is 650).Work Experience: 2 month internship at a Bank (Not naming it for privacy reasons) in the Foreign Exchange division.
Letters of Recommendation: Boss at Internship, Data Analysis College Professor, Economics College Professor.
Work Experience: 2-month internship at a bank in the Foreign Exchange/Derivatives division.

Additional Education: (Coursera & EdX Certificates):
MIT: Applied Mathematics for Quantitative Finance.
MIT: Introduction to Computer Science and Programming using Python.
MIT: Derivative Markets Advanced Modeling and Strategies.
Columbia: Financial Engineering & Risk Management Part I.
Columbia: Financial Engineering & Risk Management Part II.
Columbia: Economics of Money and Banking.
UPenn: Fundamentals of Quantitative Modelling.
HSE: Stochastic Processes

Others: I founded an online Finance community which mostly focuses on teaching the basics of Quantitative Finance. I compose music and have worked as a studio guitarist.
My post masters goal is to start working at an Investment Bank/Hedge Fund as quant preferably in London, and then I'd like to start my own impact fund in my country to help reduce inequality by financing education specially in the area of finance which I feel is lacking.

Hi,
Nationality: Indian
Course: MSc Finance
GPA: 9.19/10
GMAT: 620 (Q49, V26) expect it to increase at least to 680 on a retake.
Work Experience: 6months equity trader, 1-month equity research internship
Undergrad: Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics ( Bachelors in Financial Markets )
ECs - Yt Football related channel with 30k subs (If it helps)

The problem is I complete my undergrad in July 2019. Got the job in Nov 2019 but lost it in April 2019 due to covid. I got into the Frankfurt School of finance and mgt(masters in finance) without a scholarship. I am thinking of taking 1 more gap, in that year I will improve my GMAT to at least 680, will have 6 months of experience in IB(internship) and will give my CFA in November. Do you think so that because it will almost 3 years since I have completed my undergrad, this 1 year will have a negative impact on my profile and chances of getting into good colleges in Europe and Canada(Mcgill MMF)?

Target college - RSM Msc Fin and Inv, SSE MSc Fin, Mcgill MMF.
Do you guys think so that it is worth waiting 1 more year for these colleges When I have already got into Frankfurt school?
I will be 23 by the time Frankfurt school program starts and will be 24 by the program starts next year. Do you think my age will be an issue because msc finance are usually pre experience programs.

Hi vibhorekanoongo,
As the first step towards your profile evaluation, I would like to point out that you have got a decent profile with room for further development. First and foremost, your GPA of 9.19 is pretty impressive. Moreover, your undergraduate college and your major in finance definitely works in your favor since it is relevant to the masters program you want to pursue. However, since you are targeting a masters in finance program, you definitely need to retake your GMAT test and aim for at least a 680+ score with a minimum quant score of 48.

Coming to your work experience, you are definitely on the right track by taking prior experience in the field of finance. Having said that, you can enhance your profile further by highlighting the other important aspects of your internship experiences such as the kind of projects you handled or worked on, the impacts you created and the relevant skills you gained from the same. Most importantly, you can shed light on any endeavour relevant to the program you are applying for.

When it comes to your concerns regarding the choice of program, it all solely depends on you and you only since you are the only one who could evaluate which program is best suited for you based on your future goals and other personal factors that may play a role in your decision-making.

Moving on to the extracurriculars, you have not given much information regarding the same which is equally important as it helps showcase a holistically developed profile which is what the schools are looking for. To give you a brief outline of how to go about this, you can maybe take up a few volunteering activities to show your social skills and certifications such as CFA or any coursera certification course to highlight your constant drive to upskill yourself. This way you will be able to present yourself in the light which hints towards your potential as a future leader in your respective field.

Speaking of the schools that you are targeting; RSM comes under the dream category (where your chances of acceptance is between 50-60%), while SSE and MCgill comes under the Competitive category (where your chances of acceptance ranges between 60-70%).

All things considered, I would recommend targeting the 2022 intake itself and bridging any gaps in your profile with relevant experiences. Having said that, you need to focus on the kind of application you submit, as it draws attention to the stronger aspects of your profile. Your application is basically what can differentiate you by highlighting your strengths and overshadowing your weaknesses. You also need to showcase your journey and how you are a great value addition to the school. Additionally, it also carries a 30% impact on your admission prospects which is why I would urge you to pay more attention to the same.

That said, if you are contemplating on how to draft an impactful application, you can check out our All-in-one service which is a complete end-to-end consulting process aimed at providing personalised application suggestions, unlimited edits, and expert consultants who would constantly be there to help you throughout your application journey! On paper, you look alright. But there are a couple of things you could do before you apply to strengthen your profile.

1. GMAT - especially for LSE, they have a strong emphasis on your academic achievement. So far, your predicted 1st is good. Support that with a strong GMAT and you'll look solid academically.

2. Work experience - it's not a 'requirement' but a good portion of applicants would have at least one 8-10 week internship. The main advantage of this is to show your motivation for applying for the masters e.g. "I interned in abc company and that sparked my interest in financial analysis. Therefore, I want to study finance in more detail before working in corporate finance." Since your internship was only 2 weeks, this might look weaker than that of other applicants. If you can squeeze in an internship now, that could help sell your story better.

3. Essay - despite the shorter experience, you can still sell yourself in your essay/personal statement using your academic experience and extracurricular activities. Try to form a coherent story of: what you learnt at undergrad -> something you found particularly interesting -> dived deeper into this (either through internship or extracurriculars or elective modules) -> this is what you want to do in my career (IB/Corp Fin) -> this is where the masters fits in. Really emphasise how the masters fills a gap you need to achieve your dream of working in IB/Corp Fin.

Hope this helps.

Hi Roha0361,

From the first glance itself, your profile appears well-groomed with minor hiccups here and there. Beginning your profile evaluation, your GPA of 8.44 in the commerce domain, is a great indicator of your academic potential. However, your target GMAT score of 650+ is a bit on the lower end which you need to upscale to at least a 690 or 700+ since schools such as HEC, LBS and LSE generally favour candidates with the aforementioned GMAT scores.

When talking about your work experience, you are definitely moving forward in the right direction especially with respect to your affinity towards the finance field which also showcases relevancy towards the program you are applying for. In simple words, your professional experience in a big 4 firm in the tax domain is as good as it gets since these B-schools are notorious for picking applicants who hail from these big4 firms. However, it is imperative that you take into account the fact that there are many applicants who possess these brands under their profile which is why you need to differentiate yourself. As a result, you can showcase how you went above and beyond in the professional front by highlighting the kind of projects you handled, the impacts created and the major takeaways from the same.

Furthemore, when it comes to extracurricular activities, you need to showcase a holistically developed profile which is what top schools are looking for. Apart from your participation in an NGO, which showcases your socially empathetic attitude, you haven't given much information about your extracurricular activities. Therefore, it is extremely crucial that you mention any positions of responsibility or participation in any clubs or society in your undergraduate college. This way you will be able to throw light on other soft skills of yours such as leadership, team-work, organizational, communication, problem-solving skills, etc. Having said that, you have acquired quite an impressive feat by completing all the three levels of chartered accountancy which again vouches for your consistency to excel and pursue a career in the finance sector.

Addressing your concerns regarding the status of the IELTS test outside the UK based schools, you need not worry because as long as you have completed your schooling and college education in the English language, you are not required to submit IELTS. However, for a final confirmation, you can drop a mail to the said school regarding their criteria. It is to be noted that despite this waiver, you will eventually require an IELTS score to process your Visa application.

Speaking of the schools that you are targeting, LBS, LSE and HEC fall under the dream category (where you have a 50% chance of acceptance). Imperial, Alliance and Manchester fall under the competitive category (where you have a 60-70% chance of acceptance). Meanwhile EDHEC and IESE can be clubbed under the safe category (where you have a 80-90% chance of acceptance). All things considered, you definitely possess a well-groomed profile which you can further elevate through your application (comprising your resume, LORs, and Essays) as it helps differentiate you from the other applicants by highlighting your strengths and overshadowing your weaknesses. Additionally, it also carries a 30% impact on your admission prospects which is why I would urge you to pay more attention to the same.

Hi everyone,

I graduated in B.tech CSE from a private university in India with a 7.6/10 cgpa back in 2020 but due to some family problems couldn't join in any of the firms I had an offer letter from,

Then I came across MiM programme which doesn't require work experience to get enrolled unlike MBA so can someone please help me with the evaluation of my profile and tell me what are my chances of getting into MiM programmes of institutions like HEC, LBS, INSEAD, ESSEC and likewise

Here are a few things I've been part of during my college days :

•Been a member of organising team of Hackathon ( took care of logistics )
•Co-ordinator for techincal and cultural fests
•Internshala Student Partner
•Member of Toastmasters club
•Placements co-ordinator

Hi nicolasarppe,
Since you are contemplating between MIM and MFin, let me provide you with a brief snippet on what exactly is the key difference between both these programs so that you can ultimately make your final decision. When it comes to MIM program, it is basically a generalised program which means the job opportunities encompases a range of business and management related fields including finance. On the other hand, MFin is a specialised program which means it focuses majorly on one area of study which is finance, thus narrowing down your career opportunities to one field alone. So, it totally depends on your preference and its compatibility with your future goals.
Now let's jump right into your profile evaluation. First and foremost, your undergraduate grade of 91% is pretty excellent which coupled with a strong brand value (a tier 1 school) goes on to vouch for the strong academic prowess you possess. In addition to this, your GMAT score of 700 is definitely on the higher end and would allow you to target top B-schools around the world. However, if you are leaning towards a finance degree, your quantitative score is extremely important in order to showcase your strong bent in the field of finance.

Another striking feature in your profile is the international exchange studies in Seoul, Korea which you can also utilise to showcase your broadened perspective and adaptability quotient.
Moving on, your internship experiences are in quite contrasting fields which makes up for the diversity in your profile. Having said that, you need to be aware of the fact that most of the competitors are going to hail from the big 4 firms which is one of the preferred choices for top B-schools. However, you can compensate for the same by showcasing how you went above and beyond in your endeavours by highlighting the kind of projects you worked on, the impacts created and your major takeaways from the same.
When talking about your extracurriculars, you definitely have not left any stones unturned with fascinating experiences under your belt. From being the board member of the Finance association, voluntarily serviing during covid crisis to serving one year in the navy as a second lieutenant, you have showcased diversity at its best. But, you need to elaborate on these activities by highlighting your leadership, teamwork and socially empathetic skills along with the impacts created and the learnings gained from the same. In addition to this, it is suggested that you also take up certain certifications or courses in order to showcase your constant mobility towards learning and growth.
Speaking of the schools that you are targeting, HEC, HSG and LSE fall under the dream category(where you have a 50% chance of acceptance). On the other hand, Bocconi and Essec can be clubbed under the competitive category(where you have a 70% chance of acceptance). Additionally, you could also target other great B-schools such as LBS and INSEAD in the dream category and ESADE, IE, ESCP and FSFM in the competitive category.
