Hi Experts,
I am a commerce student with over 5 years of work exp in investment banking/financial risk consulting industry and inorder to move to the next level in my career i decided to study for gmat last year. While last year i prepared for a month but couldnt appear for the exam due to unforseen circumstances. I decided to quit my job in june this year and started my preparation in july.
After completing all the material of the gmat prep ( course was two months) and OG and 5 mocks i decided to give the exam.
I gave the exam today and scored 570 (verbal 31 and quant 36) , this score has crushed all my hopes cause now i dont know what else i need to study. As of now i have rejected this score and I would request you to help me in a couple of things:
- Sould i give the exam again in a matter of 15 days
- Should i take more coaching or is practice the key
- Should i focus more on gmat prep as compared to unofficial material
At this juncture any help is welcome, i am seriously disappointed as i completed all the material and was scoring decently in the mocks.

Gmat prep mock 1- 530
gmat prep mock 2- 670
MGMAT Mock 1-680
MGMAT Mock 2- 690
Veritas- 650
Any advice would be appreciated. While preparing i never faced an issue in the english section, i do struggle with SC though. With regards to quant i was so focused on understanding the pattern of the difficult questions that i didnt spend time in gaining a conceptual understanding to attack any question.
I hope to reappear in a month or so as i have alrdy been preparing for more than two months and have currently taken a break from work. My target score is 720-730.
Please help

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. If you can answer a few questions, then we should be able to figure this out:
When you took your CATs:
1) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT each time (including the Essay and IR sections)?
2) Did you take them at home?
3) Did you take them at the same time of day as your Official GMAT?
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)?
5) Did you ever take a CAT more than once? Had you seen any of the questions BEFORE?
Given this Official Score, you should NOT retake the GMAT in 15 days. Whatever 'issues' you're facing will take longer to fix than that amount of time. Thankfully, the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam, so you CAN train to score at a higher level.

2) Did you take them at home? Yes
3) Did you take them at the same time of day as your Official GMAT? Nope, i took one in the last week
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)? No i took the scheduled breaks
5) Did you ever take a CAT more than once? Had you seen any of the questions BEFORE? The instructional material that i had access to from the classroom coaching had some of the questions which i also saw on the CATs
Also i felt that i material i had access to was unnecessarily hard like some of the questions on the manhattan cat exams. I didnt really focus on the OG as i had been provided detailed questions for each topic. Please see details:
1) Quant: I first did the strategy guides then the concept notes from my class and worked on around 250-300 questions per topic.
2) For RC: i worked on OG, did some concepts and also some 100 odd questions provided by my institute
3) For SC: I worked on OG and did some 500 odd questions
4) For CR: I worked on OG and did some 400 odd questions
Given this score, do you think i can work for another month and make a substantial jump. I am really lost as to how i can plan my preparation again.
