Hi,
I am a female journalist working as an Associate Producer in India Today, a TV news channel. I want to do an MBA in marketing (as I feel that the skills are transferable from the newsroom). I am looking at Canada and the US.
I have a 690 (Q 47, V 38) on the GMAT, but I'm hoping to retake the GMAT in a month. I have a little over 3 years of experience in TV news production. I have an undergraduate honours degree in English Literature from India's top college. I thought my profile was pretty competitive in the Indian applicant pool, but I've just been dinged by the Queen's University in Canada.
I don't quite know how to react to this first rejection. Should I not do an MBA at all? Should I look at another field to specialise in (eg consulting)?

It happens to everyone, you have a lot of company here.
I have an MBA in Marketing myself and have also taught marketing at the MBA level. My background is in media (Gannett/Dow Jones) so I feel like I might be able to help you.

Your ding could be for several reasons:
1. Lack of clarity in career goals.
2. b-schools inability to help you in achieving your objectives
3. a sub standard application.
The good thing is that the application cycle is just getting started, so you still have several b-school options as well as the chance to take corrective measures and submit more competitive applications.
