Hi edma90,
Based on the info you have provided, it appears that you have some great work experience and your GMAT score is in line with the schools you're targeting.
That said, I do believe that the top MBA schools may be challenging for the following reasons:
- At 30/31 years old when you enter b-school with 7 years of work experience, you need to make a very compelling reason why you belong in a regular MBA vs. executive MBA program in the U.S. The schools are looking for students that are still open to new thinking and new ways of doing things. The perception is that the older candidates may be more set in their ways. It's not something that can't be overcome, but you need to really make the case for it.
- For the European schools, your age is not as much of a consideration since the average age skews older. That said, schools like INSEAD value global exposure and experience, and its student body comes from top schools and companies all over the world. It would be a little more challenging for someone not coming from a top university and/or globally recognized company. Once again, not impossible just a little more challenging.
- Another key concern would be that your long term goal is to stay in financial services. Based on your years of work experience in investment banking, you don't really need an MBA to transition into hedge funds or VC/PE. B schools want to give the spot to students who really need the MBA to achieve their long term goals. Hence, I would recommend that you really think about why you want and need the MBA, then you will be able to make a compelling case to the schools.
Overall, I believe that the top programs may be a challenge, but it would all come down to your essays and how you differentiate and position yourself for each school. In addition, your recommendations would also be a key component.
