bschoolhunter - I dont believe that you will be at an advantage by taking the GRE over GMAT. Here's why:

1. According to recent research by GMAC, 26% of admission officers prefer GMAT over GRE, while only 2% prefer GRE over GMAT.
2. It has been well known that your GMAT score has a huge impact on your chances of securing scholarship/fellowship. I have not heard the same about GRE.
3. Some Professors at Quant focused schools prefer that students in the incoming class have a certain minimum GMAT Quant score. This gives them confidence that the student will be able to take on the rigors of course work. Since GRE quant is a lot easier than GMAT Quant, I am not sure how they would feel about your GRE quant score (unless you have an extremely high score).

Another point that you should take into account is the uncertainty about converting the GRE score to the corresponding GMAT score:

https://www.ets.org/s/gre/flash/bschool ... index.html

167/170 in Verbal reasoning and 165/170 in Quant reasoning can be translated to a GMAT score between 680 to 790 - a 110 point score range. Different business schools may interpret this data differently. Do you want to apply with this uncertainty?

These are just a few points that you should consider while choosing GRE over GMAT when applying for B-Schools.

Regards,

Rajat Sadana

Thanks for your assistance... More than the simplicity I was thinking of GRE more so from the perspective of diversity. Would a candidate be at an advantage from a diversity view point if they took a GRE over GMAT

It's not until later in the month, but I'd recommend enrolling in this workshop.

Many programs want to see how they should incorporate the GRE into their decision making process, but I doubt that an exam would be considered under diversity.
