Hi. Sorry about your score. It is possible things did not line up - variations in scores are possible, as you are finding a discrepancy between your practice tests and real score. I am not sure that ESR will tell you much but you at least see which question type in verbal was the culprit but usually the results of ESR are not very helpful as you can't review questions or mistakes and it is agony.

So it may not be a question of materials frankly. You are using plenty already. You can definitely improve with TTP - many have and I feel it is an easy $99. I would consider retaking within a month or even as little as 2 weeks - definitely keep practicing and keep your skills up so they don't get rusty - take minimal breaks from studying and review past materials/lessons regularly.

On the order of test, you need to warm up before you hit your hardest section. Many people found that if they attack their enemy head-on (e.g. Verbal) they actually perform worse than if they had taken AWA and IR first, so I would actually recommend doing your weakest area last or at least once you have warmed up (my personal observation and recommendation that's based on performance and also on the options that GMAC offers for section choice).

It would have been great if you were using the wrong materials but I don't think you were. You can try changing things up and see if perhaps a TTP course is closer to your heart. EMPOWERgmat is also good for a short term course and also can be purchased for just a month and cover the verbal aspect but you will get overwhlemed with 2 courses and MGMAT books :dazed ... sometimes less is better and what I am wondering is if you would be better of going back to the MGMAT books, reviewing, and going through your error log....

I just got my ESR back and it looks like I scored in the following percentiles for Verbal:
- Sentence Correction: 72nd (83% Grammar and 66% Communication).
- Reading Comprehension: 88th
- Critical Reasoning: 33rd!!!! (33% Analysis/Critique and 40% Assumptions)

So it seems like CR is what I should really focus on, as well as SC. I already have the Manhattan Prep All the Verbal and the CR bible. How else should I prepare? Do you suggest I go through every OG problem and re read the CR bible?

Hi hopeful15

I’m sorry to hear how things went with your GMAT.

The good news is that you scored really well on quant, right? That said, I understand that you are not satisfied with your verbal score, so the question we need to ask is why you scored so high on your practice exams but lower on the real GMAT.

Assuming that you took your official practice exams under realistic testing conditions, the results show that, on a good day, you are capable of scoring higher than V34. Thus, it’s quite possible that nerves (as you mentioned), stress, tiredness, or a combination of all three negatively affected your test-day performance. However, it’s also possible that you have some lingering weaknesses that were exposed on test day. Although I’m unsure of how you prepared, it’s possible that, in your preparation, particularly in verbal, you did not really learn to do what you have to do in order to score high on the actual GMAT. Rather, you picked up on some patterns that were effective in getting you relatively high scores on practice tests. So, for you to hit your score goal, your preparation, particularly for verbal, probably needs to be more complete, meaning that you have to go through the various types of GMAT questions carefully to find your exact weaknesses, fill gaps in your knowledge, and strengthen your skills.

For verbal specifically, you have to become more skilled at clearly defining the differences between trap choices and correct answers. Otherwise, you will get stuck guessing between two choices or be surprised to find that you incorrectly answered questions that you thought you answered correctly. Becoming more skilled in this way takes carefully analyzing all of the answer choices to lots of verbal questions to develop an eye for the logical differences between the choices. In other words, you have to go beyond answering practice questions and reading explanations to doing deep analysis of questions to learn to see everything that is going on in them.

Regarding section order, certainly, you could try to switch it up on practice exams to see if that has any effect on your score. However, the main reason for your test day struggles may be what I mentioned above.

Moving forward, if you decide that you need some new quant and verbal materials, take a look at the GMAT Club reviews for the best quant and verbal courses. You also may find my article with more information regarding
how to score a 700+ on the GMAT helpful.

If you’d like more specific advice on how to improve your quant and verbal skills, feel free to reach back out. Good luck!

Hi hopeful15,

First off, a 650/Q47 is a solid Score, so it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School. As such, a retest might not be necessary. Depending on the Schools that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

https://gmatclub.com/forum/ask-admissio ... tants-124/

If you were consistently scoring higher on your CATs/mocks, then some further investigation is probably warranted. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. Before we discuss any of those potential issues though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
3) What is your overall goal score?
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
5) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

You might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

Yes, you are spot on. I also feel that you might have just has a bad day. bb rightly pointed out that you may give your exam earlier. But there is no harm in preparing well as well. All the best!
