Hey,
Don't put GMAT Prep into the long box.
GMAT is hard test too, so you'll need a lot of preparation to get sound score.

I'm recommending you to start your GMAT Prep journey ASAP. Just to be sure that you're aware of some nuances.
Good luck!

I was thinking if giving the GMAT in Jan 2018 would be too late? If I get a good score then by the time I apply to the colleges I would already have 2 Years of Experience. Wouldn't that weaken my chances of getting in?

Beginning of the January is the Deadline for R2 for most Business Schools.
You will have no time for second attempt if needed.
You can take this risk if you're very confident with your estimated test score.

Don'e forget that chances to be accepted is higher in R1 than in R2 and than in R3.
Less competition and additional Rounds to apply if not accepted in R1.

When are you going to apply to B-school?
If you are aiming for 2018 intake, then Jan 2018 is way too late but if you're gunning for 2019 intake then it's a good schedule.
Assuming you're Indian, I highly recommend that you apply to schools in R1.
The deadlines for R1 usually are in late September/August.
Ideally you'd want to finish with GMAT 2-3 months in advance, so June or July'17.
