Let’s let the number of shares that A, B, and C received be a, b, and c, respectively.. So we have:

a + b + c = 432

and

8a = 12b --> b = (2/3)a

and

8a = 6c --> c = (4/3)a

Substituting (2/3)a and (4/3)a for b and c, respectively, into equation 1, we have:

a + (2/3)a + (4/3)a = 432

3a = 432

a = 144

Answer: B

A+B+C = 432

Just change the ratio in a single term

3/2 B + 3B = 432
B = 96

A = 3/2 * B
A = 3/2 * 96
A = Rs. 144

The way I approached this is by simply reducing the ratio to simplest forms, 4:6:3. Then dividing 432 by 13 and multiplying 4. I fot 132.9 which I rounded up to 133. Why does that approach not work? Can someone please suggest?

The approach does not work because 8 : 12 : 6 is not the ratio of A’s, B’s, and C’s shares.

We are given that:

8A = 12B = 6C

So the shares are inversely proportional to 8, 12, and 6:

A : B : C = 1/8 : 1/12 : 1/6 = 3 : 2 : 4

Thus, A’s share is 3 out of 9 total parts:

432/9 * 3 = 144

Also, this is not an approximation question, so rounding 132.9 to 133 would not be valid.
