Hi I wish to give my gmat this September. I will be appearing for gnat first time. My question is :-
1. Whether I should study from the official guide 2022 only?
2. Is the quant review and verbal review book (bundled as part of gmat official guide) required for gmat prep?
3. Does the official guides contain concepts or are they only questions?

well you can check below link for more information :

1. Whether I should study from the official guide 2022 only? - for verbal yes restrict to official questions , but for quant practise as many and from sources like GC , MGMAT , official ,
2. Is the quant review and verbal review book (bundled as part of gmat official guide) required for gmat prep? no they are different books , they are all set of retired questions which are good
3. Does the official guides contain concepts or are they only questions? well yes there are concepts or say very basic introduction about topic , but not all is covered ..

Hi Rishab05,

Since it sounds like you're just beginning your studies, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can access 2 for free at www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a little studying first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the basic content and question types, then that's okay - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. That score will give us a good sense of your natural strengths and weaknesses and will help provide a basis for comparison as you continue to study. A FULL CAT takes about 3.5 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have that Score, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.

Many GMATers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores - and with a September Test Date, you have given yourself lots of potential study time (which is great!). In that same way, many GMATers who use a 'book heavy' study approach end up getting 'stuck' at a particular score level, so you'll likely end up needing to invest in some non-book resources. The OG books are great sources for practice questions, but they're not designed to teach you Tactics, patterns or the little 'secrets' behind the GMAT - for those, you'll need Course-oriented materials. To that end, you might want to work on the OG a little later on in your studies.

I'd like to know a bit more about your timeline and goals:
1) What is your goal score?
2) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hi Rishab05,

1. The official guides are an important source of practice questions, and I think almost all test takers will benefit from using them. As for more material, that's your call.

Just in case your question is whether you should use only OG 2022, you don't need the latest edition.

2. As other forum members have pointed out, these books are a source of additional practice questions. You'll probably need more practice questions at some point between now and September.

3. Some theory and tips, but mostly questions (and explanations).

Hi Rishab05

OG may be a great source for solving GMAT like questions, however, it is definitely not the ideal way to prepare in your case. Moreover, you may find that the OG is a good option as a question bank but lacks detailed explanations for you to use for improvement. It’s always better to prepare with a definitive resource to help you learn concepts while formulating a consistent strategy to solve questions before practicing them from the OG. This way, your preparation will be a lot more structured, and the chances of you leaving gaps in your learning will be significantly less. Focus on improving the method you follow to solve questions because that's what stops people from scoring 700+.

Additionally, you may find this article helpful:

As GMAT is an adaptive test, I suggest you to go with an online course as it helps you take adaptive quizzes and provides you all the content on a single platform. The best way to choose an online course is to check out the free trials of the courses out there and then choose the one which suits you the most. But make sure to choose the course which can help you with not only the concepts but also the application of concepts. And it would be even better if the course can help you with the study plan as it will help you be clear of what to study on any given day. You can check out the free trial of GMATWhiz and take a decision. It is a personalized course that comes with an integrated study plan and adapts the content in real-time on basis of your performance.

And I can definitely help you with the study strategy. GMAT is a test which focuses on application of concepts. So, you need to make sure that you learn not only the concepts but also their application. You can schedule a call with me using the link below so that I can guide you in a better way.
