Conclusion: writing slowly creates high quality content
Negate E: best selling authors (who write slowly) do not create high quality content as compared to not-best sellers ( who write quickly)

And Conclusion falls apart

Premises : a survey of best-selling authors found that these authors most frequently write very slowly, spending more time on the first draft, and then publish the manuscript with little editing.

Conclusion: This shows that writing more slowly is the most effective method for producing high-quality manuscripts.

Missing information: Best selling authors produce high quality manuscripts.

Hence, E is our answer. If we negate the statement that the best selling authors don’t write the high quality manuscript the conclusion falls apart. This assumption is absolutely important for the argument to hold true.

Some writing teachers believe that writing is best accomplished by creating a rough draft very quickly, and then editing and re-editing through many drafts. Recently, however, a survey of best-selling authors found that these authors most frequently write very slowly, spending more time on the first draft, and then publish the manuscript with little editing. Authors of books that are not best-sellers write the first draft more quickly, and then rewrite and re-edit. This shows that writing more slowly is the most effective method for producing high-quality manuscripts.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the conclusion is based?

Writing quickly and then rewriting many drafts of a manuscript is not useful in creating certain types of manuscripts.
Best-selling authors are able to write either quickly or slowly, and create many or few drafts of a manuscript.
At least some writing teachers lead their students to write slow first drafts with little editing.
Best-selling authors write slowly and create few drafts in creating the majority of their manuscripts.
Best-selling authors create higher quality manuscripts than do authors of books that are not best-sellers.

The conclusion introduces a rogue idea: that writing slowly is the most effective method for producing high-quality manuscripts. Most of the passage talks about best selling authors. In the conclusion, the argument makes a logical leap. So the correct assumption connects best selling authors and high-quality manuscripts.

Argument: Teachers = creating rough draft quickly and then editing and re-editing many drafts.
Best selling authors = Write first draft very slowly and then quickly edit and publish
Non-best sellers: Write first draft quickly, re-write and re-edit
Assumption: ?
Conclusion: Writing more slowly is the most effective method for high quality manuscripts

Which of the following is an assumption on which the conclusion is based?

A. Writing quickly and then rewriting many drafts of a manuscript is not useful in creating certain types of manuscripts.
Does not co-relate with the conclusion.

B. Best-selling authors are able to write either quickly or slowly, and create many or few drafts of a manuscript.
Wrong. Goes against the argument.

C. At least some writing teachers lead their students to write slow first drafts with little editing.
Wrong. Can't say as it is not mentioned in the argument.

D. Best-selling authors write slowly and create few drafts in creating the majority of their manuscripts.
Wrong. This is what the argument clearly states. Nothing assumptive about it.

E. Best-selling authors create higher quality manuscripts than do authors of books that are not best-sellers.
Correct. This connects the conclusion and the argument. Because best selling authors write slow, therefore there manuscripts are of high quality, therefore they sell more, therefore writing slowly is better method
