Please consider the below examples: 1)Lungs of reptiles function like that of birds. (Incorrect) Correct form: Lungs of reptiles function like those of birds.
2)The historical sites that surround the village bustle with tourists.
Although its sounds correct to me that usage of ‘that’ in the first sentence is incorrect and is correct in the second. Can some one explain me the logic behind the same? If the that is used as a pronoun will it be always in singular form or can it be used as those?

Hi sinha07, in this sentence, that acts as a demonstrative pronoun. When used as a demonstrative pronoun, that can only refer to singular entities.

In this sentence, that is used as a relative pronoun. When used as a relative pronoun, that can refer to both singular and plural entities.
So, both the following will be correct:
The historical sites that surround the village bustle with tourists. The historical site that surrounds the village bustles with tourists.
