The results from an experiment generated data with a mean of 36 and a standard deviation of 5. Which of the following values is more than 3.5 standard deviations from the mean?

A. 18.0
B. 22.5
C. 41.0
D. 43.5
E. 53.5

We are given a set of data with a mean of 36 and standard deviation of 5. We calculate that 3.5 standard deviations is 3.5 x 5 = 17.5.

Thus, 3.5 standard deviations above the mean is 36 + 17.5 = 53.5, and 3.5 standard deviations below the mean is 36 - 17.5 = 18.5.

The only answer that is more than 3.5 standard deviations from the mean is 18.

Answer: A
