C

Elimimated A, B and D - lack of "that" after "suggest"
eliminated E because of missing "as" after "harmful"

Though margarine was introduced as a supposedly healthful alternative to butter, recent studies suggest it is as
harmful or worse than butter
.
• it is as harmful or worse than butter
• it is just as harmful or even worse than butter
• that it is as harmful as or worse than butter
• it is as harmful as if not worse than butter
• that it is as harmful if not worse than butter

Option C.

Here "that" should follow "suggest"
Option E is idiomatically incorrect.
Hence option C is correct option

The following are the Subjunctive Verbs -

ask
propose
demand
recommend
desire
request
insist
require
prefer
suggest
urge

The structure of Subjunctive Mood is -

Quote:
subject + verb + that + subject + verb in simple form. . .

Further option (C) uses the correct Idiomatic usage

as x as y ( highlighted in green above)

So, Correct answer will be (C) :-D  :P

Re: Though margarine was introduced as a supposedly healthful alternative [#permalink]
I understand that this question has the correct usage of the "as....as" idiom, however, I chose E, because I interpreted the meaning of the question to say that margarine is "as harmful as, if not worse than butter" I would almost say that in spoken English that's an expression used in a context like this. So while C used the correct idiom, I thought the intended meaning was E.

Could someone help me understand this?

Only one choice states that, hence the answer.

A. it is as harmful or worse than butter

B. it is just as harmful or even worse than butter

C. that it is as harmful as or worse than butter

D. it is as harmful as if not worse than butter

E. that it is as harmful if not worse than butter

sentence with suggest refers to subjunctive error type
so left with option c & e
amongst them c would be correct as it has right use of comparison as harmful as ... where as in option e 'if' which makes conditional statement is wrong
hence option C is correct..
