OG Q 2017(Book Question: 38)

Quote:
Three people each contributed x dollars toward the purchase of a car.

Total contribution is 3x

Quote:
They then bought the car for y dollars, an amount less than the total number of dollars contributed.

Cost of car is C (say) = 3x - y

Quote:
If the excess amount is to be refunded to the three people in equal amounts, each person should receive

Refund amount per person is \(\frac{(3x - y )}{3}\)

So, Answer will be (A)

Why isn't it y-3x/ 3?
Isn't 3x-y a negative number, since 3x<y?

Can somebody help me with my reasoning error?
Thank you!

No, 3x > y because three people contributed more than the price of a car (contributed 3x, the price = y).
