Total contribution is 3x
Total spent is y
Balance is 3x - y (Given)
To split the Balance equally among three is (3x - y) / 3

Three people each contributed x dollars toward the purchase of a car. They then bought the car for y dollars, an amount less than the total number of dollars contributed. If the excess amount is to be refunded to the three people in equal amounts, each person should receive a refund of how many dollars?

Total money contributed to purchase car = x+x+x = 3x
Total money spent to purchase car = y
Therefore Total Balance = 3x - y

Balance to be refunded equally = $$\frac{(3x- y)}{3}$$ ........... Answer A.....

Total money contributed= 3x
money spent on purchasing car= y

money lest to be distributed among 3 people= 3x-y

money equally distributed= 3x-y/3
