Hello krishnateja93,

Thanks for writing in.

The completion of your undergrad in 5 years as well as the lack of any extra-curricular activities and achievements will raise questions that will need to be addressed.

However, if you have your eyes set on ISB, you need to make the most of what you have on your profile; focus on finding achievements that may not be overt or direct; articulate a set of career goals that strongly sync with your experience; and, check if there is any possibility of improving your GMAT score. Your current score hovers around the average; however, if you want to compensate for the other (weaker) aspects of your profile (at least to some extent), you will need to register a spike in other components of the application.

Should you wish to discuss your prospects in greater detail, please feel free to get in touch with us for a profile evaluation session.

All the best!

I was hoping to recieve some insights on my profile. I wanted your opinion on how can I improve my profile in the 2 odd months that I have and how hopeful should I be.
I'm targeting ISB as my top choice and SP Jain and MDI if ISB doesn't pan out.
Currently, I have a score of 710 (Q48 and V38) and I hope to write again by 1st week of Nov since Q48 is the 65th percentile and SP Jain needs a sectional score of 75 percentile.

I graduated with a BBA from Symbiosis Pune in 2021 and have been working in my parent's startup since then as a co-founder. I also had my own venture during college until 2022 which I shut down following the funding winter since a lot of projects that I was receiving dried up. The current startup is geared towards providing healthcare facilities through IoT-enabled devices in semi-urban and rural areas. My own startup was a gigworking platform for women who wanted to work from home owing to their family obligations. We provided them with work and training to get the work done. I have worked with some really big names like Google Pay, Phonepe, Paytm, and Rapido, among others during college. I was part of a Rotaract and also part of my college's social working club in addition to working with a US-based NGO called the Climate Reality Project. I also have a research paper published.

My 10th/12th/College has been: 87/92/7.7 in addition to my 710 which I'm hoping to bump up by the time I submit the application.

Things I believe that work in my favour are my work ex, decent college, volunteering work and gender.
Things that worry me include a mediocre academic track record, my score and the immense competition at ISB.

I have my essays written out, but they don't really tell a story or capture my personality, which I've generally counted on while interacting with people.

Post MBA goals: Since there is an entire essay on this, I have thought this out. ISB has asked how will their PGP help in achieving a candidate's goals. I have written that I want to go back and expand the business internationally since I do not yet have much international exp in my profile, however I am not sure if it falls under short or long-term goals.
Here are my goals:
A. Short term: content knowledge, networking opportunities, development of critical thinking skills, leveraging diversity at ISB for a more holistic perspective, credibility, etc. On the work front, I aim to get more hands-on on the operations side and bring in institutional investors.
B. Long-term (unsure of how to word this): In the next decade or so take over from my parents at running the company and expand internationally.

Do let me know what you guys think, I'd highly appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance,
Riya.

Hello,

Your grades are excellent. Your GMAT score is fine, unless you're considering a retake based on your preparation. You still have time before the Round 2 deadlines, (your current score is acceptable for applying); but you can think about retaking the test later.

International work experience would be a valuable addition. Your extracurricular activities look solid, especially as you've been keeping up with your publications. Knowing an International language always is a plus. Now, it's about telling your unique story. Take a moment to reflect on what can truly boost your application.

All the best!

Hello riyajha28,

Thanks for writing in.

Good to see you identify your strengths and weaknesses so accurately. However, to be honest we see the strengths in your profile outdo the weaknesses because:
-Your score, though average, is not low; besides, you are trying to improve it anyway.
-Your entrepreneurial experience with your own start-up as well as that of your parents will enable you to add interesting talking points to your profile, and, thereby, help you stand out.
-Competition at ISB will affect all applicants equally! :-)

In short, we see you have a strong case at hand; yes, the GMAT improvement will help a lot.

We feel the following video will help you structure your essays better. Please take a look:

Should you feel the need to discuss your case in greater detail, please feel free to get in touch with us for a profile evaluation session.

All the best!

riyajha28 - quick q before sharing some feedback: What are your goals post MBA i.e. do you plan to go back to running your business, or enter the workforce (if so, which sector/ function/ roles are you targeting)?

If you describe your experience to adcom as you have described your profile here, it is unlikely that you will be seriously considered by Adcom. Your profile is so much more than the statistics it represents, or the job titles you have held. How did you make the most of the opportunities that came your way after a relatively mediocre academic performance that likely served as a learning experience? How have you since contributed to your teams, solved challenges, motivated colleagues, and influenced senior executives with your ideas and ability to improve processes and expedite results? If you do not feel enthusiastic about how you are a good candidate for an MBA (comes with guidance and practice of course!), you will never be able to show ISB that you are!

I am sure there's more to the ECs or community engagement than you currently realize.

Should you need professional guidance feel free to connect

It's been ages that I have seen a very refreshing profile here, so congratulations to you.

It would have been great if you had shared more about the startup that you are currently working on. However, going by the themes that I see in your profile, I see much potential in narrative shaping. This is because you have exposure to building ventures and probably have received support and training from within your family, considering how your parents are involved in this venture with you.

The key to cracking an admit is to focus on how you have contributed to scaling the operations and achieving the team's objectives, especially since you are the leader of your "functional responsibility." As a co-founder, you would have worn many hats in your startup and hustled to bring order and structure to the business. What are the key learnings you've gained? About the markets, the target audience, customers, as well as about yourself as a young entrepreneur? All of these aspects should find their place in your neatly structured narrative.

Furthermore, one way for young applicants to stand out is to demonstrate how they excel compared to other aspirants who are similarly positioned in terms of age and experience. Highlighting your mature outlook and deeper understanding of the industry you want to operate will help you truly differentiate your profile.

You did not speak about your goals but that is important when it comes to ISB. MBA essays are all about passion, they are about how ready you are to address a problem in the world or seize an opportunity that will have a significant impact on an industry. To address your goals effectively, your passion must be reflected through your narrative.

Never follow a fixed template for your B School essays, every profile is different and you yourself should determine what stories and structure will best present your personality. Feel free to reach out.

Get candid advice tailored to your specific situation. We do not cap discussion hours with our applicants

Hello!

Thank you for the details about your profile. You certainly have a strong profile to target the programs you have listed. You may need to be mindful that Consulting roles aren't easily available in non-English speaking countries. Adding a few US schools to your list may be interesting.

ISB certainly remains a strong choice. With a strong application, you will have a good shot at ISB even with your 700.

All the best for your applications!

Hello riyajha28

Below are some input on your profile.

Improve your profile:

· GMAT score: Your current score of 710 is good, as you are planning to write your GMAT again, we would advise you to aim for 720 or 730. This will give you a competitive edge against other applicants, especially at ISB. You have two months to improve your score, so focus on your weak areas and make sure you are well-prepared for the test.

· Essays: Your essays are one of the most important parts of your application, so make sure they are well-written and tell a compelling story about yourself. Your essays should showcase your unique experiences, personality, and goals. If you are struggling to write strong essays, consider getting help.

How hopeful should you be?

It is difficult to say for sure how hopeful you should be, but I think you have a good chance of getting admitted to ISB. Your work experience at your parent's startup is impressive, and your extracurricular activities show that you are a well-rounded individual.

If you are able to improve your GMAT score to 730 or higher and write strong essays, you will be in a good position to get admitted to ISB. However, it is important to be realistic about your chances. ISB is a highly competitive school, and there are many qualified applicants.

We wish you all the best.

Hi All,

Could you please evaluate my profile ( Target School - ISB ).

Age: 25 yr

GMAT Score: 690 [Quant:49 , Verbal:34, I.R.: 6 ]

Educational Qualifications:

M.Tech - 9.32 CGPA - Signal Processing and Machine Learning - IIT, Guwahati
B.Tech - 9.52 CGPA - Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering - JNTU, Hyderabad
CLASS XII: 96.7%
CLASS X: 9.7 CGPA
Secured All India Rank - 55 in GATE 2019 Examination

Work Experience:

1.5 Years work experience at Accenture, Japan ( Tokyo Office )

Extra Curricular:

1) Best Delegate Award at MUN ( During B.Tech )
2) Have a first author research paper in an International Machine Learning Conference
3) Passed Japanese language basic level certification exam
4) Actively publish poems and analysis of research papers on personal blog.

I hope you're all doing well.

Do let me know what you guys think, I'd highly appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance,
Riya.

Hello krishnateja93,

I hope you are doing well. Your profile looks good on the surface. Speaking about your academic performance, a GMAT score of 710 is decent but slightly below the average GMAT score at ISB, which is typically around 710-720. While it's not a deal-breaker, a higher score would strengthen your application. Your 10th and 12th percentages are good and demonstrate consistency in your academic performance. Your B.Tech percentage (66%) is on the lower side compared to many applicants, but it's not a major issue, especially if you can compensate for it with other aspects of your application.

Your work experience as an Operation Executive, Community Manager, and Content Developer in the edtech sector is a positive aspect of your profile. It shows a diversified skill set and industry exposure. The 5 years of work experience align with the average work experience of admitted students at ISB.

You mentioned having no extra-curricular activities or achievements. While extracurriculars can enhance your profile, they are not mandatory for admission. Focus on highlighting your professional achievements and skills in your application.

You have a competitive profile, but there are areas where you can improve:

1. Consider retaking the GMAT to aim for a higher score, as it can significantly boost your chances.
2. Emphasize your diverse work experience in the edtech sector, showcasing your achievements, responsibilities, and impact.
3. While you may not have traditional extracurricular activities, think about any leadership roles, certifications, or volunteer work that you can include to demonstrate your well-roundedness.
4. Craft a strong application essay that explains why you want to join ISB and how you can contribute to their community.

Ultimately, the admissions process is holistic, and your application will be evaluated based on your overall profile. Make sure to present a compelling narrative that highlights your strengths and aligns with ISB's values and goals.

Good luck with your application!

Hello,
In terms of GMAT and grades, along with your CA, things look good. The work experience is not very clear in terms of timelines - internship/ full time role etc? Your extra curricular pursuits are also above average. So far, you have done good work, sufficient to put up a strong application.

All the best!

GMAT - 710
Did you really get this split: 710 Q41 V45 Zeejah?

I must admit I have never seen a more lopsided split.

Haha, so yeah. That is in fact the score and the split. I panicked during quant and got many basic questions wrong and I was aware of it. Even without panic, I was scoring Q44, V42 almost consistently in my practice tests (officials mocks - I gave 6). So, quant wasn’t going to above that without more work.

Given that, with verbal I was very very careful. It didn’t hurt that verbal was my strong suit in general, so I could do damage control there.

But yeah, if my verbal had tanked, it would be a different story. Lopsided is right, one of my friends called it “reverse Indian”. Also it’s Q42 not Q41 (same same but different) . My profile has it mentioned incorrectly.
