First off, thanks to everyone on the GMAT Club for all the help over the past several months, it’s made all the difference! My goal is to get into Columbia for the FT MBA program starting Fall 2021. I scored a 740 on my GMAT today and am curious if that’ll be good enough?

I have a 3.5 gpa from UNT, 2 strong letters of recommendation, one from my supervisor and one from a Disney executive, I feel great about my essays, and I have over 12 years overall work experience with over 5 of those in a leadership role including at Disney. Thoughts on my likeliness of being accepted? Thanks for the input!

Congratulations on your score! It's 13 points higher than their average, which, depending on your demographics (ethnicity, gender, etc.), could be either "very good" or "exceptional". Your work experience looks solid, however if you're 32+ (guessing you're in that range based on your 12 years in the industry), you will need to put some extra effort into convincing the admissions committee that you really need the full-time MBA experience. You'd be a shoo-in for Executive MBA programs, but I'm assuming you're not inclined toward that. Another concern might be the mid-tier undergrad university, but with over 10 years of work experience (and 5 years in management at Disney), I don't suppose it matters very much. I wish you the best with your application, and recommend you apply in the Early Decision round if your heart is set on CBS. Cheers!

Thank you so much! Demographic wise I’m a 27 year old white male. I started working young as a cook and never stopped so not all work is relevant but a lot of it is. I’m definitely planning on full time MBA and will be applying for the early decision. I’ve definitely been concerned about the undergrad experience but figure I can’t change that now, just have to try to balance it out with other appealing factors. Thanks for the help!

A GMAT score cannot make an application. If it were that easy, they wouldn't ask for anything else.

Current student at CBS - I know people under 700 on their GMATs I know people with 780s. Does the score matter? Yes. But it's not the only thing.

740 should be at least average (although next year will be historically difficult, I imagine - based on the number of requests we are getting from students wanting to chat with us) so it won't keep you out. That's about all you can hope for from at GMAT score. One box checked. Focus on the essays.

Best of luck.

Absolutely. You should start working on your applications. This is more than average but more importantly your experience would either make it or break it depending on how you write your applications. 2021 would be difficult but it is applicable to all. In the mean time, if you give another shot and improve then awesome.

All the best.!!

With strong work experience and recommendation letters, 740 score is sufficient to balance your GPA for admission to Columbia FT MBA. Interview needs to be solid too.

Congrats for the this great score.

You got an strong score taking into consideration your ethnicity and profession. I think the adcom will evaluate in conjunction with your essays and interview. So you need to be prepared. I strongly believe your can make use of your early work and how it shaped your life, vision, skills....etc. So, my advice is to not to sacrifice opportunity by hiring a good consultant who can really help you with your for essays.

PM if you want recommendation for essay writing services based on my experience.

Good luck

Hello janavig,
On paper, you have a strong profile barring your GMAT score for Columbia and Wharton. Again, a lot will depend on the quality of your leadership experience and impact at work. Since you haven't talked about your work experience in details here, it will be difficult to comment. You will need more than your current GMAT score for strong chance at both Wharton and Columbia.
You haven't mentioned your post MBA goals. A lot will depend on that before commenting on which school to target. In general, you don't have to do an either or. You can apply to ED, and if you get in, you can then 'scrap' Wharton. Again, any advice depends lot on what your goals are.

First of all I cannot thank you enough for evaluating profiles and giving a sense of direction to prospective students. I have been following up with the posts silently for a while and decided to take a stab it. I hope you guys evaluate my profile. Last but not least, Wish everyone staying sound and safe during this pandemic :)

 Started my career with one of the largest insurance firms in India. Cleared regulatory exams and became a personal financial advisor during. Did a business of INR 2 million. This was during my under graduation. (I've not considered this into my total work ex.

Hi Suns1994

Thanks for sharing a descriptive profile for evaluation. On the surface your profile looks pretty good for Columbia, I do see good glimpses of leadership and intellect in your profile. Your work-ex seems good too and you exhibit elements of a leader in your ECs too.
In addition to academic performance and solid GMAT scores, Columbia wants to see ambitious career aspirations and backgrounds. You stand a fair chance to make it to Columbia as long as you highlight the following in your application:
1. How Columbia is unique in helping you achieve your goals
2. Your career path, especially short term goals should be very clear
3. A person beyond work

In order to add further value to this evaluation, it is essential for me to understand your post-MBA goals. Additionally, make sure you list down the gaps that you have identified in your profile that you think an MBA from Columbia will help you fill in order to achieve your post-MBA goals (and do make sure you stick to Columbia's values through and through).
What’s going to matter most in your application is how you connect all the dots and build a great story. If you’d like we are happy to hop on a call sometime this week to discuss your chances further. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

May I ask which intake and round are you eyeing?

Cheers!

Hi MBAnBevaluations,

Thanks for informative evaluation. You're right. Although I still think my GPA would be an issue.

I'm trying for next year round 3

Hi silvialohr15,

You have got a good and diverse profile, the latter carrying more importance to you since you are worried about a slightly lower GRE. Also, your undergrad stats are strong, so your GRE should pose no problem About your work experience, since you have not provided many details, I can not say much. However, on the surface, it looks great and exciting, transitioning from a job to the family business and now a startup. Your community experience is a highlight in your profile with such diverse interests. You should definitely bring interesting stories out of your art narrative. About your post-MBA goals, they look good but you need to make them more concrete like how will you give a global outlook to the family business and your startup. What are your plans for the same?

Also, you need to give strong reasons for pursuing the j-term cohort profile. Just to give you an insight, this is a very rapid process in comparison to the traditional MBA and so your post-MBA goals should be very much in alignment with your prior (strong) career experience and you should be able to convince the adcoms about your fit to this program and its fast curriculum. If you’d like we are happy to hope on a call sometime this week to discuss your chances in some other great schools in further detail. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi and thank you for the incredible advice being provided here. I’m looking to get an idea of where I would need to score on the GRE (or GMAT, but think GRE would be better), to get into CBS.

I’m a strong writer with a somewhat compelling background (atypical if you will) and demonstrated success while working. I’m taking the GRE in two weeks and pretty much have to decide immediately after if I want to apply for early admission at CBS. Would you be able to offer your thoughts on what my minimum GRE score would likely need to be?

Nationality: White, Male

Age: 27

UG: A non target New York university, similar to Baruch or Fordham

GPA: 3.8/4

Major: Econ

GMAT/GRE: Yet to take

Additional certification: CFA level 1&2

Work experience: 3 years.

Began my career in finance at BlackRock focusing on fixed income analytics (with 1 promotion), after 2.5 years moved to a small asset manager (~100bn) as a product specialist covering private debt and some other niche asset classes and have been there about 6 months now.

Extracurricular activities:
Limited as of late, but several years working and volunteering with children and adults with special needs while in undergrad and high school. Relatively recently began volunteering for a mentoring non profit for children from under privileged backgrounds. Also played D3 athletics with some minor recognitions.

Goals post-MBA: Likely banking or PE

Thank you!
