Hi everyone,

Got a few queries on DM regarding interview process. Re-posting the replies for benefit of all. Hope it helps.

Interview will commence with the extempore. There would be some folded paper chits with topics written in them, You would be asked to pick one. They will give you an option that if uncomfortable with the first choice, you may take a second choice but then that would be final choice, and you cant go back to the first choice once you have picked up and seen the second chit. They will also give you 2 minutes of time to write down your thoughts before speaking.

My Advice. Go with the first choice if you feel you will be able to speak atleast something in that topic. What they want to see is your response to an unfamiliar situation, what you speak should be generally aligned to the topic and they wont correct you in between for any factual errors. But it is essential that you take a stand for or against the topic, all topics are made as per that, so there would be a 'for' and 'against' side. Be logically firm on your stand and dont give a neutral view. Once they start cross questioning on what you spoke, try to defend the answers with logic, and if you feel what they are saying is right, please accept your error. It happened with me, I accepted and the interview went well. Just take care of general factors like hand movement, body language, speed of speech, diction etc... which I am sure you would already know.

Next part is job related queries, why MBA, what role after MBA, why IIMA etc... it would be completely based on what you have written in your essays, with emphasis on awards and challenges.

My Advice. Only way to get through this round is to brutally honest about your career and aim to join IIMA, and match your present role, and post IIMA expectations. if you are looking at changing career paths post IIMA, be sure why and roadmap ahead. One of the factor is that the B school should be able to place you after you finish the course, so your skill sets and expectations should match with what can actually happen after the course. Just be completely honest, I am repeating the advice, as the professors are extremely experienced and can make out fake answers.

The interview atmosphere is very congenial, they want you to perform to the best ability. Just dont try to say something which you dont believe in or in not true. If you have a contradictory view, present it politely. It would be more of a conversational setting than grilling interview.

All the best and please let me know if any other help required.

Warm regards

Could someone please comment on the following aspects of IIM-A interviews ?

- Is the duration fixed at ~30 mins? I have seen multiple posts and advice to stop the extempore b/w 15 min and 20 min mark. Although, this seems very unreliable advice :)

- Someone shared that the panel judges mostly on the extempore topics. And an initial decision is made in the first 10 minutes. How true is that?

The duration of interview can generally be found out from how many people have the same reporting time for that hour. I feel it would be 20-40 min generally.
Extempore is a way to establish qualities like structured thinking and communication, knowledge about common topics, thinking straight under pressure. If they can find out all this within your first 1-2 min, they’ll move on to why mba type of questions.
PS : personal opinion. Others may feel differently

Hi,

There is no fixed duration of the interview. It would however be not less than 20 minutes, and usually not more than 45 mins. Mine lasted for about 30 mins.

Extempore can be for 8-10 mins also as the speaking length would depend on the knowledge of the topic one would choose. After your extempore, panel will discuss regarding your view points and that would be about 7-10 mins more, but not certain. Different people had different timelines last time based on the panel they went to. My extempore went for about 5 mins, followed by discussions for another 5-6 mins. I used a strategy of writing down the points, and went ahead in that sequence to explain my stand to the panel. That keeps the thought process steady and helps to get over the initial nervousness..:)

There is no sacrosanct rule regarding decision based on extempore, but yes, from what I can make out based on my experience and speaking to other successful candidates, it does play an important part. The panel will check one's ability to handle a topic in short notice, how you can analyse and put up your points in a logical and coherent manner. But please dont panic if the extempore doesn't go well as per your expectations, you never know what the panel's opinion is..:)... go ahead confidently with the balance part of interview.

Just be calm composed and honest about your answers, and everything will fall in place. It would be a conversational tone, not a grilling interview, just enjoy the process and you would do great.

Best of luck

Warm regards

Point 1 is reliable... Interview duration can be 15-40 mins and a shorter interview doesn’t necessarily means rejection likewise longer interview doesn’t necessarily means selection

first part of Point 2 is INCORRECT and second part of Point 2 is correct in many cases but not all.

Apply with higher score.

IIM A takes deviation in score requirements for those with diversified and unique traits/experience but the deviation also has limits.... so I think 575 would be too big a deviation for you. But PV sindhu can get in with 545 as wel 😀 😛

Hey everyone! I see a bunch of questions related to the modalities of the IIMA PGPX interview process. We recently had a detailed chat with one of our mentees who is currently at IIMA. The discussion covered everything related to the format, preparation strategy and interview atmosphere. Sharing the link of that discussion here -

Sharing a couple of extempore topics for the IIM A PGPX programs:
• What should be India’s strategy to boost manufacturing under ‘Make in India’ post-pandemic?
• How will the Russia-Ukraine conflict shape global energy markets in the next five years?
• Will ChatGPT and AI tools replace human decision-makers in management?
• Is growth at all costs compatible with sustainability and stakeholder capitalism?
• What is the role of the corporate sector in improving India’s education system?
• If you were the finance minister, what three reforms would you prioritize this year?
• Describe a situation where you failed and what you learned from it.
• What should be India’s approach to urban mobility and reducing pollution in megacities?
