This is pertaining to the use of semi-colon to separate lists, and the maintenance of symmetrical present participle parallelism – aiding, pollinating and helping. These two functions are neatly done in B

A minor use of the semicolon is to separate items that themselves contain commas

This SC has puzzled me... I thought that semicolon can be used ONLY if both the clauses before and after the semicolon are independent, that means that they MUST have a subject and a verb. Here "pollinating banana, breadfruit, and mango trees" has neither the subject (which is conveyed in the first clause) nor the verb (that should be pollinate) so how can it supports semicolon?!

I have attempted a dictionary of the English language, which, while it was employed in the cultivation of every species of literature, has itself been hitherto neglected; suffered to spread, under the direction of chance, into wild exuberance; resigned to the tyranny of time and fashion; and exposed to the corruptions of ignorance, and caprices of innovation. --- Dr Samuel Johnson

Johnson, Samuel. "Preface." A Dictionary of the English Language: A Digital Edition of the 1755 Classic by Samuel Johnson. Written in the 18th century.

The practice of resorting to semicolon as the punctuation to separate phrases has been adopted from as early as the 18th century.

In the 2016 OG explanations - options D & E are NOT ruled out for the construction "they pollinate banana, breadfruit... etc.".

OG explanation says that (E) "maintains parallelism throughout" (but that the construction "helping the producing" is incorrect).

How does (E) maintain parallelism throughout?

Here, I looked at construction of list one, and attempted to do the same in list 2, and list 3. An easy way to do this is read the third list without the first two, and reconstruct how it should work. B is the only one that makes logical sense

I feel like both B and D are correct. I will appreciate if someone could provide the explanation as why Choice (D) is wrong. We know that semicolon is used either in lists or in connecting independent but related clauses.

Choice B no doubt follows the list rule as well as parallelism. But IMO, choice D also does the same. Please see below

Tropical bats play important roles in the rain forest ecosystem, aiding in the dispersal of cashew, date, and fig seeds; --This is one independent Clause.

they pollinate banana, breadfruit, and mango trees; and indirectly help producing ---- This choice also follows list rule as well Parallelism. Pollinate working verb is parallel to Help working verb. In addition to this, list rules is also justified - pollinate {x,y,and z}; and help {x).

Please advise if my understanding is wrong here and appreciate the reasoning behind it.

Thanks

Hi ankurarora,
the first item of this list starts with "aiding",hence,we need all other items in v-ing form.
Moreover, this list is to explain the how tropical bats are important in this specific ecosystem

hope this help :-)
