Validity of GRE Score

A friend of mine gave GRE in Feb 2016. Validity of this score of 5 years will be counted till the beginning of class or till applying.
Ex - Can he apply to a college whose session starts in 2022 (6 years from date of GRE) and admission starts in 2021 (5 years from date of GRE).

Hi,
I think it depends from school to school. For ex: Stanford - they say: ''The scores you report must be valid as of the deadline date of the round in which you apply''. It is till applying or let's say the round result.

You can go through the schools website in which you are interested and check their separate requirements accordingly.

FAQ from ETS website:

How long are GRE scores valid?

For tests taken on or after July 1, 2016, scores are reportable for five years following your test date. For example, scores for a test taken on July 3, 2018, are reportable through July 2, 2023.
For tests taken prior to July 1, 2016, scores are reportable for five years following the testing year in which you tested (July 1–June 30). For example, scores for a test taken on May 15, 2016, are reportable through June 30, 2021.
GRE scores earned prior to July 2014 are no longer reportable. GRE scores earned in July 2014 are reportable until June 30, 2020.

Note: It takes approximately five business days to process requests to send GRE scores. If you plan to send scores and the date at which your scores are no longer reportable is approaching, allow enough time for processing or your scores may not be sent.

It may be school-specific, but the most accepted stand is that the score must be valid on the deadline of the application.

ashwani I agree with the advice to check with the individual school. A rough rule of thumb is 5 years around the application due date, but there can be some variation around the test dates accepted. For the most part though they'll be around the application due date not the program start.

Here is one example, Wharton, for this year's application cycle (start date fall 2020):
If you are applying in… Your GMAT and/or GRE test date must fall on or between
Round 1 (app due Sept 17, 2019) September 17, 2014 to September 2, 2019
Round 2 (app due Jan 7, 2020) January 7, 2015 to December 23, 2019
Round 3 (app due April 1, 2020) April 1, 2015 to March 23, 2020
