A: discovering that a pharaoh who had ruled in the last days of Egypt was buried with fewer artifacts than their -- Most prominent result has been... discovering? Also, subject verb disagreement.
B: the discovery that pharaohs who had ruled in the last days of Egypt were not buried with as many arti-facts as their -- hold
C: to discover that pharaohs, which ruled in the last days of Egypt, was buried with fewer artifacts than their -- subject-verb disagreement, "who" instead of "which"
D: the discovery that pharaohs who ruled in the last days of Egypt were buried with fewer artifacts than were their -- hold
E: to discover that a pharaoh who ruled in the last days of Egypt was buried with fewer artifacts than were his
Between B and D, I think D is clearer and B embellishes the meaning a little bit. "Not as many" can mean more or fewer artifacts. It's slightly more vague and therefore should be dropped.
I thought since two activities of the past are being discussed , i.e. ruled and buried , the presence of had is necessary. Can you explain why B is wrong?

Whether or not you have "had" there is sort of a false decision point. Look instead at parallelism here. (B) incorrectly compares the number of artifacts buried with one group to the other group itself (not the number of artifacts buried with the other group). Comparing people to objects isn't just rude -- it's also grammatically incorrect because it violates parallelism. 
Doesn't D change the sentence meaning? The original sentence says, "discovering that *a* pharaoh who had ruled in the last days of Egypt"
The discovery was one pharaoh. The answer implies multiple pharaohs. Thoughts?

Take a closer look at the sentence: (D) uses the plural pronoun "their," which requires a plural noun! That means that the singular "a pharaoh" is grammatically incorrect.
Thanks LauraOrion. Is this generally the rule with SC questions? I.e., whichchever tense is used the most throughout the original sentence, is the one we are correcting the sentence to match? I would have thought we were correcting the pronouns to match the nouns, but I'm relatively new to SC.

So it's really a case of "just make the pronoun and the noun match." If they don't match, then the answer is wrong. Worry more about the grammar than the wedding yourself to the original sentence, especially since there is a 1 in 5 chance that the original sentence is actually wrong in some way!
