Nice question.

Here is what I did for this one =>

Number of hours => 48 => 40+8
Hence the total income => 40x+22*8 which is equal to 816

Hence 40x+22*8=816
x=16

Smash that D.

Last week Chris earned x dollars per hour for the first 40 hours worked plus 22 dollars per hour for each hour worked beyond 40 hours. If last week Chris earned a total of 816 dollars by working 48 hours, what is the value of x ?

A. 13
B. 14
C. 15
D. 16
E. 17

$ x per hour - 40 hours
$ 22 per hour - Every subsequent hour
$ 816 - 48 hours
=> 40x + 22*8 = 816
=> x = 16

D is the answer.

We can create the equation:

40x + 22(48 - 40) = 816

40x + 22(8) = 816

40x + 176 = 816

40x = 640

x = 16

Hi All,

We're told that Chris earned $X per hour for the first 40 hours worked plus 22 dollars per hour for each hour worked beyond 40 hour and that Chris earned a total of 816 dollars by working 48 hours last week. We're asked for the value of x ?

With the given information, we can create the following equation (and solve):
40X + 8(22) = 816
40X + 176 = 816
40X = 640
X = 16

Final Answer:

All explanations above seem to be perfect , I'm just trying to express an easy calculation below:

40 x + 22* 8 = 816 [I assume all could understand till here.]
=>8(5x + 22) = 816
=>5x + 22 = 102
=>5x = 80
=>x = 16

So we're told that he worked 48 hours in total;

that means 40 regular hours and 8 overtime hours. 40 hours that is

the time, and the rate per hour is X dollars per hour; so that means that the

amount of work, in other words the amount of money that was saved here, is 40 times X.

So 40X plus 8 times 22, and that equals an 816; basically the question

just boils down to a single equation with a single unknown: what is the value of X?

Can someone maybe explain why the rate for the extra hours is 22$ and not x + 22%? I don't know if the question is a bit ambiguous or my interpretation is just wrong.

Hi wilstuderen,

Since the prompt never uses the word 'percent', you should be skeptical about a "+22%" anywhere in your 'translation' of what is written.

In this question, the 'units' are clearly dollars (based on the number of hours worked):
$X per hour for the first 40 hours worked. For example, if 27 hours are worked, then (27)($X) is earned.

...PLUS $22 per hour is earned for any additional hours beyond 40. For example, if 42 hours are worked, then (40)($X) + (2)($X+22) is earned.

Earning for \(8\) hours \(=22*8=176\)

Earning for \(40\) hours (the rest earnings are for 40 hours) \(=816-176=640\)

Per hour earning for 40 hours \(=640/40=16\) Dollars; The answer is \(D.\)

We can equate the whole as follows:

\(40x+22*8=816\)

\(40x=816-176=640\)

\(x=16\)

The answer is \(D\)

Gor GMAT it's not enough to understand the math you also need to know how American working culture works.
What has confused me is the plus $22. I have understood it as 8x + 8*22.

If I did not glance at the answer choices, I would have thought the answer was 640 based on the wording of the question. The question tells you "Chris earned x dollars per hour" and then asks for what the value of x is... and not what x is per hour. Do you see how I see this is a bit ambiguous?

woohoo921 with "Chris earned x dollars per hour" "what is the value of x" translates into "How many dollars per hour did Chris earn?"

I don't think there is any ambiguity regarding what x is representing. The question tells us that x is the number of dollars Chris earns per hour for the first 40 hours. The answer would be 640 only if the question asked for the total amount of money Chris earned during the first 40 hours. Since Chris earns 640 dollars in 40 hours, he earned 640/40 = 16 dollars per hour, which means that x = 16.

Im not good with formulas so i solved this one logically
I tooked the 8 hours plus and multiple it by 22 $ = now i have 176$
I will substract it from his total earning which is 816$-176$=640$
Now I simply divide the 640 by the rest hours (40 ) < 640/40=16 >
Answer is D
Note : sometimes we don't have to solve everything with formulas 🙏🏻
