There are many benefits to timing your practice, including:
I took the GMAT around 2 years back and got a 660 (Q49, V32, IR6)
I just took the GMAT yesterday and scored 730 (Q48, V41, IR6). As you can notice, I considerably improved my Verbal score but somehow flunked on Quant. That came as a surprise to me as I have been really good in CATs at home, scoring up to Q51.
Coming to the point, I am planning to apply to INSEAD for 18J in-take. Do you think my 730 GMAT score will suffice? As I am worried my Q48 is not up to the mark. Would they look at my previous Q49 as well?
Also, I heard about the website MBAmath.com, where you can take a few courses to show your math proficiency. I would love to do that just to build my point. Would it help? Or any other thing?

Hi Salman,
I wouldn't worry too much about a Q48, it's still a good score and 730 is above average! Coming from a maths background should also place you on the safe side of being able to handle the curriculum. Having said that, it depends on how competitive is your country pool (if you're Indian, a higher score would be better). In any case, I would rather concentrate on building a strong application showing your international motivation, your leadership achievements as well as your extracurricular interests.
Hi Congratulations on your score. Regarding your query, i specifically remember one of the admission panel members say in a video on youtube that they usually look for a 70 percentile+ score in both math and verbal. A Q48 should be 75-79 percentile. My suggestion would be review and gather as much info as possible on the net, get in touch with a alumini if possible and write a application which describes you the best. Goodluck.
2) INSEAD looks at a overall profile of the candidate based on work experience, international exposure and potential you show to add value to the classroom. I know my classmates had 680 GMAT and had got in due to their amazing profile .
I would concentrate on getting your story out and value add to the class at INSEAD
My total score is 650 - and I was invited for an interview (not sure whether I will get an admit offer as of 18/2). Your score on both elements are outstanding. Also, I've attended one of their Open Days and the Director said that GMAT is really just 20% of your entire score- "680 is really the same as 700." The end point from an academic perspective is whether you can take the curriculum. Key point is that being in INSEAD, every one is more than their GMAT score, and after the entire process (as well as interviewing with another top mba program), it feels like GMAT really is just an artificial cut off point.
Coming from a STEM background, your quant score shouldn't raise an issue. I'd just focus on killing it in your essays and how interesting your profile is. Oh, and they now have video interviews, another chance to bring the energy and enthusiasm you have (I'd go crazy on the practice if you are not comfortable with video interviews). I felt incredibly awkward but kept recording myself to get a feel how I went. Being self conscious about body movement, tone, and facial expression can make or break that part. Good luck mate.
