Hi Cleveroctopus,

If you're just beginning, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can download 2 for free from www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). Many Test Takers are unhappy about their initial CAT results, but you really shouldn't be - that first CAT helps to define your current skills, strengths and weaknesses and it provides a basis for comparison as you continue to study. If you want to do a bit of practice first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the general content and question types first, then that's fine - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. A FULL CAT takes about 4 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.

I'd like to know a bit more about your timeline and goals:
1) What is your goal score?
2) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

Thanks everyone for the insight, much appreciate. I think I'll do some light review to brush up on format and concepts then head over and do a diagnostic. My biggest worry was wasting a test since there is only a limited number that mimics the actual test.

To answer a few questions:

1) What is your goal score? Ideally 700+ as I want to put the time and effort into getting this score
2) When are you planning to take the GMAT? Within 3-4months
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School? Fall 2017, I want to be fully prepped and ready hence why I am starting ~1yr in advanced

Hi Cleveroctopus,

Since you're not planning to apply to Business School until next year, you've given yourself plenty of time to study and take the GMAT, which is good. Since there are 6 Official CATs, and enough 3rd-party CATs that can provide you with a 'close-enough' score result, you shouldn't worry about "wasting" 1 of the Official CATs for your diagnostic. That initial score is important, so we want it to be as realistic as possible (which is one of the reasons why you should plan to take the FULL CAT - with the Essay and IR sections).
