"Which they" was not required here

Hi!

I think C has parallelism.

C) While studying mechanical engineering at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in the late 1800s, Charles Hart and Charles Par invested all their assets in founding the Hart-Parr Gasoline Engine Company of Madison which was the first factory in the United States and was dedicated to

Also In D and E "this" is referring to "Hart-Parr Gasoline Engine Company of Madison" which was a factory. so I think company can be a factory.

I Narrowed down to C and E but chose C instead. Because I thought in E "Dedicated" after "united states" seems to modify united states and this is not the intended meaning. ?

Correct me if I am Wrong?

"Touch rule" in modifiers is not a strict rule and there can be exceptions. When some essential information can not be placed anywhere else except next to the noun it talks about, the noun modifier can modify the slightly far away noun. So, option E doesn't modify the US it properly modifies the noun "factory".

C is out because it changed the intended meaning.
E it is because NM can modify a slightly far away noun.

Apologies for the previous post.
Hope it's workable.
kudos to you.

Meaning error: the original and intended meaning was that it was the first such factory which was dedicated to .... and not that it was the first factory in the US

D) While studying mechanical engineering at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in the late 1800s, Charles Hart and Charles Par founded the Hart-Parr Gasoline Engine Company of Madison, investing all their assets in this first factory in the United States which they dedicated to
"Which they" is redundant

Could you please explain why the placement of "In the late 1800s" is problematic in answer choice B?

"In the late 1800s" is a prepositional phrase of time it refers to the verb phrase "were+studying" and the prepositional phrase should follow the verb.
Moreover, "in this first United States factory" is wrong because it changes the originally intended meaning.

Just to add on, I feel in Option C - the sentence says that they invested all their assets in founding the company, but actually they invested all assets in the factory. What do u think? (I too marked C , lol)

E) While studying mechanical engineering at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in the late 1800s, Charles Hart and Charles Par founded the Hart-Parr Gasoline Engine Company of Madison, investing all their assets in this first factory in the United States dedicated to

The word dedicated can modify United States as well. Hence, it can give a wrong meaning that the US was dedicated to the production of gas and traction engines.

Please help.

Hi Iwillget770, such past participial phrases (towards the end of a clause) can modify the noun or the noun-phrase, whichever makes sense, immediately before the participle. So, in this case, the participle phrase "dedicated..." will modify "factory", because this is what makes sense.

A similar example that comes to mind:

In 1995 Richard Stallman, a well-known critic of the patent system, testified in Patent Office hearings that, to test the system, a colleague of his had managed to win a patent for one of Kirchoff's laws, an observation about electric current first made in 1845 and now included in virtually every textbook of elementary physics.

Again, the past participle phrase "made..." modifies "observation" (and not electric current), because this is what makes sense.
