The University played a role in the Civil Rights Movement and the education system by desegregating black and white students. The movement brought about protests, and it got the attention of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who visited the school in the 1960s. The movement was named the "Albany Movement" after students from the state school refused to leave an all-white waiting room at a bus station in Georgia. The school suffered a loss in the 1990s from a flood, and rebuilt many of its buildings. The school continues to grow and foster a culture that promotes education to the underprivileged in urban cities surrounding the campus.
