Our official winner is Michael McCarthy (right) from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota! Here is Michael’s #Kaplan Has My Back Sweepstakes entry:
“I didn’t have a strong science background coming from a rural farming community. My dad works as a captain on a ship that moves crude oil around the Gulf coast, and my mother works in the local jail at home, so it became very tough for me to get connected with the people who are passionate about science. But when I came to Concordia I finally got connected with some biology faculty, and my geekiness spiraled to unprecedented heights. This picture is my first set of results from undergraduate summer research at Concordia College with my advisor. I took a research position to gain lab experience and build my resumé for my medical school application, and I couldn’t be more happy that I took the plunge into research. Currently, I’m studying for my upcoming MCAT and I’d be lost without my Kaplan prep books, so Kaplan definitely has my back!”

A passion for science
Michael is going into his senior year, majoring in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. He is also an NCAA athlete who enjoys juggling academics, sports, and his outreach volunteer group, called Science Academy. At Science Academy, Michael, along with his fellow members and chemistry faculty, organize activities and shows for elementary students that demonstrate to them how amazing science can be. They showcase all sorts of things, from freezing bouncy balls with liquid nitrogen to using colored markers and coffee filters to show them how capillary action works. “I love it because it allows us to give back to the community as scientists and help underprivileged youth learn about the world around us,” Michael explains.
Michael will be putting the $1,000 prize towards an engagement ring for his girlfriend, who has been there with him through some very tough times.
“I recently lost my younger sister to suicide, and my girlfriend was there for me when my world was turned upside down. Both of us are ready to start our lives together, and the prize money will help me tremendously with showing her how much she means to me.”
