Lovely Q as usual from MGMAT!

A) This is true. The passage clearly states that the Bakery does not make anything with nuts and that no traditional baklava is made without nuts. Therefore, if the Bakery does make a Baklava, it cannot be a traditional one.

B) This is consistent with the passage. The passage tells us that all the deserts bought on Friday from the Avery Party were from the Bakery, and that the Bakery did not sell any spice cakes.

C) This is not consistent. Read the passage carefully "All the deserts purchased LAST FRIDAY from the Avery Party were from the Bakery". We only know about what was purchased on Friday, and not on any other day. It is possible that they purchased from another store on another day. This is not a must be true.

D) Consistent. We are told that the bakery made spice makes, and that the bakery does not make anything with nuts.

E) This is once again consistent. If the Bakery, which does not make anything with nuts, makes a carrot cake, that cake must be nut-free.

Choice C is the correct answer.

All of the desserts purchased last Friday for the Avery party were purchased from Kelsey’s Bakery. None of the desserts made at Kelsey’s Bakery contain nuts. This limitation therefore places some restrictions on the types of desserts made at Kelsey’s Bakery. For example, no traditional baklavas are made without nuts, and most traditional baklavas are made with walnuts. Last week, Kelsey’s Bakery made spice cakes, but none of the desserts purchased last Friday were spice cakes.

If the above statements are true, each of the following must also be true EXCEPT

Quote:
(A) If Kelsey’s Bakery makes baklava, then that baklava is not traditional baklava.
No traditional baklavas are made without nuts, and most traditional baklavas are made with walnuts. None of the desserts made at Kelsey’s Bakery contain nuts.
If Kelsey’s Bakery makes baklava, then that baklava is not traditional baklava.
MUST BE TRUE

Quote:
(B) The Avery party did not purchase spice cakes from Kelsey’s Bakery last Friday.
All of the desserts purchased last Friday for the Avery party were purchased from Kelsey’s Bakery.
Last week, Kelsey’s Bakery made spice cakes, but none of the desserts purchased last Friday were spice cakes.
The Avery party did not purchase spice cakes from Kelsey’s Bakery last Friday.
MUST BE TRUE

Quote:
(C) None of the desserts purchased for the Avery party contain nuts.
All of the desserts purchased last Friday for the Avery party were purchased from Kelsey’s Bakery.
None of the desserts made at Kelsey’s Bakery contain nuts.
None of the desserts purchased last Friday for the Avery party contain nuts.
But there may be desserts purchased on days other than last Friday for the Avery Party which could have contained nuts.
NOT ALWAYS TRUE

Quote:
(D) Some spice cakes do not contain nuts.
Last week, Kelsey’s Bakery made spice cakes. None of the desserts made at Kelsey’s Bakery contain nuts.
Some spice cakes do not contain nuts.
MUST BE TRUE

Quote:
(E) Kelsey’s Bakery does not make carrot cakes unless those carrot cakes are nut-free.
None of the desserts made at Kelsey’s Bakery contain nuts.
Kelsey’s Bakery does not make carrot cakes unless those carrot cakes are nut-free.

True "no traditional baklavas are made without nuts"

(B) The Avery party did not purchase spice cakes from Kelsey’s Bakery last Friday.
True "Last week, Kelsey’s Bakery made spice cakes, but none of the desserts purchased last Friday were spice cakes." and all cakes purchased last friday were from Avery.

(C) None of the desserts purchased for the Avery party contain nuts.
Maybe. We know only those purchased on friday do not contain nuts

(D) Some spice cakes do not contain nuts.
True, Because Kelssey's make only those cakes that do not contain nuts and they did make spice cakes

(E) Kelsey’s Bakery does not make carrot cakes unless those carrot cakes are nut-free.
True, Because Kelssey's make only those cakes that do not contain nuts

If the above statements are true, each of the following must also be true EXCEPT

We need to observe a few key points
1)All of the desserts purchased last Friday for the Avery party were purchased from Kelsey’s Bakery.

Last Friday is an important key word. They could have purchased the deserts for A.party on Saturday or someother day.

(A) If Kelsey’s Bakery makes baklava, then that baklava is not traditional baklava.Yeah it true
(B) The Avery party did not purchase spice cakes from Kelsey’s Bakery last Friday.Yeah true, Clearly mentioned:none of the desserts purchased last Friday were spice cakes.
(C) None of the desserts purchased for the Avery party contain nuts. We are not sure about all the deserts at A's party. We only have info about their Friday purchase.

(D) Some spice cakes do not contain nuts.Yeah true, hence they are baked in this bakery
(E) Kelsey’s Bakery does not make carrot cakes unless those carrot cakes are nut-free.Yeah true.

Interpret:
MBT question, EXCEPT...
All of the answers MBT except one of them. One of the answers may have a situation in which it may not be true.

A. From the passage None of the desserts made at Kelsey’s Bakery contain nuts."
Translated to a diagram with conditional logic dessert @ Kelsey's Bakery -----> NO nuts ("None" is a negative sufficient)
Other statements: traditional Baklava -----> WITH nuts ("no" is a negative sufficient.)
No nuts -----> NOT traditional Baklava (Contrapositive)
SOooooo A ---> B ---> C; or A ---> C Dessert @ Kelsey's Bakery -----> NOT traditional Baklave
Through Syllogism, A IS a MBT and is NOT the EXCEPT.

B. "none of the desserts purchased last Friday were spice cakes." purchased last Fri (@ Kelsey's) -----> NOT Spice Cake.
So it is a MBT that "The Avery party did not purchase spice cakes from Kelsey’s Bakery last Friday."
This is NOT the EXCEPT.

C. From the passage we have dessert @ Kelsey's Bakery -----> NO nuts
and (first sentence) Dessert purchased on Friday for the Avery party -----> From Kelsey's Bakery
BUT, there is no mention that ALL desserts purchased for the Avery party are purchased on Friday or that all were purchased from Avery's Bakery.
It is possible, therefore, that some of the desserts purchased for the Avery party contain nuts.
C appears to be the EXCEPTION!
Let's check the others!

D. From the passage: "Kelsey’s Bakery made spice cakes." It is reasonable to determine that spice cakes are a dessert, and from the passage: dessert @ Kelsey's Bakery -----> NO nuts ("None" is a negative sufficient)
So, it is clear that "Some spice cakes do not contain nuts" as stated in the answer. This is NOT the EXCEPT.

E. Again, from the passage: dessert @ Kelsey's Bakery -----> NO nuts ("None" is a negative sufficient)
Carrot cakes are clearly a dessert.
According to the answer (unless is a negative necessary), Kelsey's Bakery makes carrot cake -----> nut free.
This is clearly NOT the EXCEPT.

Indeed, C is the answer!

The problem doesn't seem to difficult, but we have to be really attentive to details. Let's deal with each statement separately:

(A) If Kelsey’s Bakery makes baklava, then that baklava is not traditional baklava.
No traditional baklavas are made without nuts, and Kelsey's doesn't use nuts - therefore, yes, the can only make nut-free one. TRUE.

(B) The Avery party did not purchase spice cakes from Kelsey’s Bakery last Friday.
On Friday, Kelsey's sold no spice cakes - therefore, the Avery party couldn't possibly buy them. TRUE.

(C) None of the desserts purchased for the Avery party contain nuts.
We know that none of the Kelsey's desserts contain nuts, and all purchases for the Avery party where made there - HOWEVER, only 'last Friday' shopping is guaranteed to have taken place at Kelsey's. We don't know whether on any other days any other desserts were bought from somewhere else for the party - therefore, there may well be nuts! DOESN'T HAVE TO BE TRUE.

(D) Some spice cakes do not contain nuts.
Kelsey's doesn't use nuts, and they still made some spice cakes - therefore, indeed, some spice cakes are nut-free. TRUE.

(E) Kelsey’s Bakery does not make carrot cakes unless those carrot cakes are nut-free.
Kelsey's doesn't use nuts - therefore, they'll have to make carrot cakes without nuts as well. TRUE.

(A) If Kelsey’s Bakery makes baklava, then that baklava is not traditional baklava.
--> True. Kesley is NO nuts shop and traditional baklava has nuts

(B) The Avery party did not purchase spice cakes from Kelsey’s Bakery last Friday.
--> True. Spice cakes were not sold last Friday

(C) None of the desserts purchased for the Avery party contain nuts.
--> Doubtful. Only the desserts at Avery's party that were purchased last Friday were from Kesley's . The desserts could have been purchased from elsewhere during other days of the week.

(D) Some spice cakes do not contain nuts.
--> True. Kesley's shop makes spice cakes hence some of them must be nut-free

(E) Kelsey’s Bakery does not make carrot cakes unless those carrot cakes are nut-free.
--> True. Since Kesley's bakery is a NO-nut shop this would be true as well

(A) If Kelsey’s Bakery makes baklava, then that baklava is not traditional baklava.- Can be inferred
(B) The Avery party did not purchase spice cakes from Kelsey’s Bakery last Friday.- no spice cakes were purchased on friday and all desserts for Averys party were purchased from the same bakery. So can be inferred.
(C) None of the desserts purchased for the Avery party contain nuts.- Given in the argument.
(D) Some spice cakes do not contain nuts.- 'none of the cakes in Kelsey's bakery has nuts and the bakery made spices cakes, that means spice cakes do not contain nuts'
(E) Kelsey’s Bakery does not make carrot cakes unless those carrot cakes are nut-free. - this is correct.

Dear GMATNinja KarishmaB

Dear GMATNinja KarishmaB

Quiet a bit of us have selected D. but the correct one is C, could u please explain this one.
Thanks.

Option (C) is not necessarily true.

(C) None of the desserts purchased for the Avery party contain nuts.

Argument - "All of the desserts purchased last Friday for the Avery party were purchased from Kelsey’s Bakery."
What if some desserts were purchased on Thursday from another bakery for the Avery party? Or on Saturday if Avery party was on Saturday?
Hence, option (C) is not necessarily true.

(D) Some spice cakes do not contain nuts.

We are given in the argument:
- None of the desserts made at Kelsey’s Bakery contain nuts.
- Last week, Kelsey’s Bakery made spice cakes.

Hence, we can say that some spice cakes (like the ones made by Kelsey's Bakery last week) do not contain nuts.
Option (D) is necessarily true.

Hi KarishmaB ,

I posted this earlier but didn't get any reply so I'm asking again:

Although I agree with the explanation for the other options, I feel like there's an ambiguity for option D. The given paragraph states that Kelsey's bakery "made" spice cakes last week. Option D states "Some spice cakes do not contain nuts" which is written in present tense. Although spice cakes that didn't contain nuts were made last week, we don't know about their state in the present. We also don't know that the bakery regularly makes them of if it was just last week. So without knowing if Kelsey's bakery made spice cakes this week, and without any information about the state of last week's cakes, we don't know anything about spice cakes that don't contain nuts this week. So the option that's written in present tense, need not be true in my opinion.

Can you check and confirm this line of reasoning?

Present tense is also used to represent general facts.

In this context, the statement - "Some spice cakes do not contain nuts" - represents a fact.

This is true.

Reason: If Spice cakes always contained nuts , Kelsey's bakery would not been able to make spice cakes.

Is this question a legit one? How will we know that Avery party is also held on other days of the week ? We were talking about Avery party on Friday. The correct option C considers other days of the week. I am totally clueless.

The question is fine.

"All of the desserts purchased last Friday for the Avery party were purchased from Kelsey’s Bakery."

The desserts were purchased last Friday for the Avery party. The party could very well have been on Saturday or Sunday etc. We are not talking about Avery party held on Friday. We are talking about the purchases made on Friday for the Avery party (which could have been held on another day). Purchases for the party could have been made on Saturday too. We often prepare for quite a few days before a big party, right?
