The Battle of Crecy was one of the greatest English victories in the 100 year war, primarily because Edward III’s archery unit was armed with more advanced weaponry than they had been in their earlier assaults on France.

(A) they had been in their earlier assaults - no antecedent for "they"
(B) their earlier assaults had been - no antecedent for "their"
(C) they had been for any earlier assault -no antecedent for "they"
(D) in their earlier assaults - no antecedent for "their"

Shorter is better. The answer (E) works fine. In (A) - (D), "they" and "their" are unclear.

The Battle of Crecy was one of the greatest English victories in the 100 year war, primarily because Edward III’s archery unit was armed with more advanced weaponry than <<<they had been in their earlier assaults>>> on France.

"they / their" -- refers to? Archery unit is singular, English victories is not relevant.

(A) they had been in their earlier assaults
(B) their earlier assaults had been
(C) they had been for any earlier assault
(D) in their earlier assaults
(E) for any earlier assault

This is why E looked like the best option.

Note: Attempted this as a part of the Christmas challenge (answers not revealed yet). Let me know if there is an error.

(A) they had been in their earlier assaults

S-V agrrement error, sine 'archery unit' is singular

(B) their earlier assaults had been
S-V agrrement error, sine 'archery unit' is singular..use of 'their' is incorrect

(C) they had been for any earlier assault
S-V agrrement error, sine 'archery unit' is singular..use of 'they' is incorrect

(D) in their earlier assaults
incorrect idiomatic usage..armed 'for' is the correct version

(E) for any earlier assault
correct idiomatic usage by using 'armed ...for'; also, removal of 'they' removes the S-V agreement error.

Hence, (E) is the correct answer

In this sentence, plural pronoun "they"/ "their" should logically refer to Edward III's archery unit, which is singular as indicated by "was".
Hence, A to D are all incorrect because of usage of plural pronoun, which has no logical antecedent.
Only E remains. Answer is E.
