An anthology of poetry by Anne Bradstreet, a Puritan settler in the North American colonies, was published in 1650, the first book of poetry by a woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan.

(A) woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan --> Wrong. Pronoun error. Here the it is ambiguous and not clear if it is referring to the book or something else. Also it here is redundant and can be done away with.
(B) woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan --> Correct. No parallelism or pronoun errors here.
(C) colonial woman and it was only the second that a Puritan published --> Wrong. Parallelism error. Here the 'colonial woman' and 'Puritan published' are not parallel unlike in option B.
(D) colonial woman and the second one only published by a Puritan --> Wrong. Parallelism error. Here the 'colonial woman' and 'Puritan published' are not parallel unlike in option B.
(E) woman in the colonies and the second one only that a Puritan published --> Wrong. Incorrect placement of only which is changing the meaning.

"the first book of poetry by a woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan." this part is trying to modify "An anthology of poetry"

(A) woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan
I have a problem with the second part of this option, introducing new clause is incorrect, we need noun modifier as first part

(B) woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan
This is my choice
the first book of poetry by a woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan
Two noun modifiers connected with and

(C) colonial woman and it was only the second that a Puritan published
The same problem as A

(D) colonial woman and the second one only published by a Puritan
one is redundant IMO
only is misplaced, should modify "second"

(E) woman in the colonies and the second one only that a Puritan published
Repeats the mistake of D

IMO

(A) woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan
Incorrect. Parallelism error. 'the first book of poetry by a woman in the colonies' is not parallel to 'it was only the second published by a Puritan'

(B) woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan
Correct. Parallelism error in A is corrected.

(C) colonial woman and it was only the second that a Puritan published
Incorrect. 'Colonial woman' changes the meaning. Parallelism error as in A.

(D) colonial woman and the second one only published by a Puritan
Incorrect. 'Colonial woman' changes the meaning. 'the second one only published by a Puritan' aslo changes the meaning, since now it means to say that "An anthology of poetry by Anne" is the second one

(E) woman in the colonies and the second one only that a Puritan published
Incorrect. Meaning error same as in D

Correct Ans: B

(A) woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan... need a Noun modifier, not a clause
(B) woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan.... Correct option
(C) colonial woman and it was only the second that a Puritan published.... Same mistake as in option A
(D) colonial woman and the second one only published by a Puritan......only is modifying published and that changed the intended meaning.
(E) woman in the colonies and the second one only that a Puritan published......Same mistake as in option D

An anthology of poetry by Anne Bradstreet, a Puritan settler in the North American colonies, was published in 1650, the first book of poetry by a woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan.

Meaning:

1. There is An anthology of poetry by Anne Bradstreet
2. Anne Bradstreet is a Puritan settler in the North American colonies
3. This anthology was published in 1650
4. This anthology was:
......................1) the first book of poetry by a woman in the colonies
......................2) the second published by a Puritan

We have //ism question here.
And entities 'the first book of poetry' and " it was only the second published" are not parallel.

placement of 'only' is also critical and changes the meaning of the sentence:
for more info please read here --->

only.PNG [ 327.32 KiB | Viewed 2098 times ]

Once you get intended meaning if the sentence, it is clear that 'only' intended to modify the book that was published by a Puritan.

POE:

A, B, and C can be eliminated straight away as they break the parallelism and have 'only' placement error.

(A) woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan
(B) woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan
(C) colonial woman and it was only the second that a Puritan published

D and E recifies parallelism error.
D looks fine from grammar and meaning stand pint, let's keep it so far.

(D) colonial woman and the second one only published by a Puritan
(E) woman in the colonies and the second one only that a Puritan published

'that' modifier needs to be proceeded with noun that it modifies. the usage of 'that' in E is incorrect.

(D) colonial woman and the second one only published by a Puritan

D is the answer

............................

Original sentence: An anthology of poetry by Anne Bradstreet, a Puritan settler in the North American colonies, was published in 1650, the first book of poetry by a woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan.

(A) woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan
The two sides of the conjunction (the first book of poetry by... and it was only the second....) are not parallel here. The left side is a phrase and the right side is a clause.

(B) woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan
CORRECT ANSWER. The two sides of the conjunction (the first book of poetry by... and only the second published by...) is now parallel. The adverb ‘only' correctly modifies ‘the second book’

(C) colonial woman and it was only the second that a Puritan published
The two sides of the conjunction (the first book of poetry by... and it was only the second....) are not parallel here. The left side is a phrase and the right side is a clause. In addition, the word "colonial woman" changes the intended meaning. It now means woman who lived in any colonies, not just the North American colonies.

(D) colonial woman and the second one only published by a Puritan
The two sides of the conjunction (the first book of poetry by... and the second one only...) is now parallel. However, the adverb ‘only' modifies ‘published’, meaning that Puritans didn’t do anything other than publishing the second book, not even reading. In addition, the word "colonial woman" changes the intended meaning. It now means woman in any colonies, not just the North American colonies.

(E) woman in the colonies and the second one only that a Puritan published
The two sides of the conjunction (the first book of poetry by... and the second one only...) is now parallel. However, the adverb ‘only' restricts the meaning that Puritan did not publish any more than two books.

An anthology of poetry by Anne Bradstreet,a Puritan settler in the North American colonies, was published in 1650,
the first book of poetry by a woman in the colonies and
it was only the second published by a Puritan

To maintain the parallelism
the First , and the second is expected
use of it was is not necessary .

(A) woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan-Incorrect
As mentioned above , pronoun -it is not necessary

(B) woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan-Keep it -

(C) colonial woman and it was only the second that a Puritan published-Incorrect
Women is colonies is different from colonial woman , changes the meaning

(D) colonial woman and the second one only published by a Puritan-Incorrect
Women is colonies is different from colonial woman , changes the meaning

(E) woman in the colonies and the second one only that a Puritan published- Keep it

It is between B and E , one is in passive form and the other is not .
only the second published by a Puritan VS the second one only that a Puritan published
I guess the repetition of one in E is redundant and not necessary so will be going to B , short and simple

The intended meaning of the answer is that the book was
i. first by a woman in the colonies.
ii. second by a Puritan.
IMO - B.
Quote:
(A) woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan
it was only.. we only need a modifier parallel to "first book .." and "". Hence it is wrong.
Quote:
(B) woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan
Correct. both the modifiers are parallel. "first book" and "Only the second.."
Quote:
(C) colonial woman and it was only the second that a Puritan published
Same modifier issue
Quote:
(D) colonial woman and the second one only published by a Puritan
"the second one only" changes the intended meaning.
Quote:
(E) woman in the colonies and the second one only that a Puritan published
"second one only that" is unnecessary and inappropriate.

An anthology of poetry by Anne Bradstreet, a Puritan settler in the North American colonies, was published in 1650, the first book of poetry by a woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan.

Before we see the answer choices lets analyze the meaning first. The author is trying to say that AN ANTHOLOGY OF POETRY by Anne Bradstreet is the FIRST BOOK OF POETRY by a Woman in the colonies and THE SECOND published by a Puritan.

(A) woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan
Parallelism is not correct her First book || It was only are not quite parallel.

(B) woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan
This is the correct choice. The first book || Only the second is parallel.

(C) colonial woman and it was only the second that a Puritan published
Parallelism is not correct her First book || It was only are not quite parallel.

(D) colonial woman and the second one only published by a Puritan
This distorts the meaning. The second one only is not very clear and concise.

(E) woman in the colonies and the second one only that a Puritan published
This again is not a very clear choice. The second one only that a ... is not very clear in terms of the meaning.

The answer is B.

This one is about parallelism, so you must detect which entities must be parallel.

Meaning:

Here the sentence talks about an anthology that was published in 1650, the first book of poetry by a woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan.

Error analysis:

First book... and "it was only.." the first part is a noun phrase and the second one is a clause, so they are not parallel.

(A) woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan- mistake of error analysis
(B) woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan - looks good
(C) colonial woman and it was only the second that a Puritan published - same mistake of error analysis, noun phrase can not be parallel to a clause, also it changes the meaning mentioning "colonial woman" instead of woman in the colonies
(D) colonial woman and the second one onlypublished by a Puritan - wrong placement of only, also same mistake of C about meaning
(E) woman in the colonies and the second one only that a Puritan published - same mistake of error analysis, noun phrase can not be parallel to a clause

So (B) is our answer.

An anthology of poetry ......, a Puritan settler ......., was published in 1650, the first book of poetry by a woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan.

woman in the colonies and colonial woman -> both sound ok as both describe woman of colonial times

(A) woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan
parallelism error - the first book of poetry..... and it was only the second

(B) woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan
better with the parallelism and correctly describes the book to be only the second one published by a Puritan

(C) colonial woman and it was only the second that a Puritan published
parallelism error - the first book of poetry..... and it was only the second that Puritan published

(D) colonial woman and the second one only published by a Puritan
only modifies published here..suggesting, Puritan only published this book...original sentence does not mean to say any such thing..

(E) woman in the colonies and the second one only that a Puritan published
second one only suggests Puritan published only two books; also stretched sentence by adding That

B, seems good :)

(A) woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan
- "it" not needed. Eliminate A

(B) woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan
Correct

(C) colonial woman and it was only the second that a Puritan published
- "it "not needed , also "Puritan Published" is awkward. So Eliminate C

(D) colonial woman and the second one only published by a Puritan
- " Second one only" does not convey the meaning of the sentence clearly plus awkward and wordy- So Eliminate D

(E) woman in the colonies and the second one only that a Puritan published
- Same as option D- So eliminated E

Dream it! Achieve it!

The “it” creates confusion here to what it is referring to.

(B) woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan
Looks good, hold.

(C) colonial woman and it was only the second that a Puritan published
“colonial woman” gives a different meaning.

(D) colonial woman and the second one only published by a Puritan
“colonial woman” gives a different meaning.

(E) woman in the colonies and the second one only that a Puritan published
The second part of the sentence gives a different meaning and looks awkward.

(A) woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan
use of it is wrong

(B) woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan (correct)
correctly modifying the anthology by Anne Bradstreet that the book was first by women in colonies and only the second by Puritans
correct parallelism

(C) colonial woman and it was only the second that a Puritan published
use of it is wrong over here inserting it as a subject breaks the parallelism (since phrase and clause cant be parallel)

(D) colonial woman and the second one only published by a Puritan
one only is wrong here conveys illogical meaning

(E) woman in the colonies and the second one only that a Puritan published
one only is wrong here conveys illogical meaning

the first book doesnt have verb.

Meaning is right.

Not sure what that is refering to.

An anthology of poetry by Anne Bradstreet, a Puritan settler in the North American colonies, was published in 1650, the first book of poetry by a woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan.

(A) woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan

understanding the meaning of the sentence to start with, what this sentence says here is An anthology of poetry was the first book of poetry by a woman in the colonies and only the second book published by a Puritan (Puritans were English Protestants in the 16th and 17th centuries) - so in option (A), "it" is a red flag and leads to straight elimination of (A)

(B) woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan

Looks alright, removes the error in (A) without introducing any other error in the sentence - HOLD, until we find a better choice below

(C) colonial woman and it was only the second that a Puritan published

Now, I don't know how technical the GMAT gets, but colonial women and woman in colonies, TECHNICALLY, mean two different things, and that was my basis to eliminate (C) + it had the same issue with "it" as option (A)

(D) colonial woman and the second one only published by a Puritan

Same meaning error as in (C) + second one only published is outright wrong - this construction not only looks awkward but also changes the intended logical meaning of the sentence

(E) woman in the colonies and the second one only that a Puritan published

Same error as the second one identified in (D)

Easily skimming through all the options and by PoE, got to eliminate 4 of them, with multiple errors identified for some, and in the end, left with (B) as the correct answer choice.

So, (B), IMO

IMO B.

An anthology of poetry by Anne Bradstreet, a Puritan settler in the North American colonies, was published in 1650, the first book of poetry by a woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan.

Following are the flaws in the underlined portion-
-> "it was only" is incorrect and unnecessary.

(A) woman in the colonies and it was only the second published by a Puritan [ Same as original. Ignore.]
(B) woman in the colonies and only the second published by a Puritan [Correct. ]
(C) colonial woman and it was only the second that a Puritan published [ She was not a colonial woman but someone who lived in colonies.Change of meaning. Ignore.
(D) colonial woman and the second one only published by a Puritan [ She was not a colonial woman but someone who lived in colonies.Change of meaning. Ignore.]
(E) woman in the colonies and the second one only that a Puritan published ["second one only" is incorrect. ]
