_______________________________________________
Meaning is important to solve the question. Lets use POE to arrive at a single answer.
A - it uses ''past simple'' - ''contemplated'', which means that an action was done in the past. Lets keep it
B - THis option uses ''present perfect'' , which means that an action started in the past and it has influence on the future. Lets keep B
C - Option uses past perfect incorrectly, there should have been an action in the past in order to say that 2 actions happened in sequence. C is out.
D - the same as in C.
E - The same as in C .

Between A and B, B gives more precise meaning that an action started in the past and it has influence on the future.
B is our winner.

Imo answer should be D

Had been contemplating (as he still hopes to perfect it before exhibition) then 'has been working on since' (continues to work)

A. contemplated about his latest masterpiece, which he had been working on since the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.
past tense, then past perfect continuous conveys the intended meaning that the artist thought about perfecting the working that had not been finished yet.

present perfect then past perfect continuous is just wrong
C. had contemplated his latest masterpiece, which he had been working on since the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.
past perfect and then past perfect continuous has logical flaw.

past perfect continuous and then present perfect continuous is a huge mass
E. had been contemplating his latest masterpiece, which he had been working on for the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.

We need to get the sequence of the events right before answering. The sequence is, the artist worked on the painting, then, once it is completed, he contemplated about it. We can use past perfect to show the earlier event while present perfect to show the action which started in past and still going on.
B captures this well and is the right choice.
So, quite confidantly, I can say that other options, A, C, D and E get the sequence of the events wrong and hence incorrect... or maybe I have got the entire thing wrong.. lol.
But I will go with the former! Fingers crossed.

A. Incorrect. "contemplated about" is unidiomatic, we don't need "about"
B. Correct. Right verb tenses with clear meaning
C. Incorrect. Past participle should not be used in the first part "contemplate" because "contemplate" happens after "work on"
D. Incorrect. "had been contemplated" is in passive voice, we must use active voice here
E. Incorrect. Same error as C

The original sentence is grammatically correct, but it is a bit wordy. The phrase "about his latest masterpiece" is redundant, since the word "contemplated" already implies that the artist was thinking about his masterpiece. The phrase "which he had been working on since the last six months" is also redundant, since the word "latest" implies that the artist had been working on the masterpiece for a period of time.

The answer choice (E) removes the redundant phrases and makes the sentence more concise and clear. The phrase "for the last six months" is used to clarify the length of time that the artist had been working on the masterpiece.

The other answer choices are not as good as (E).

(A) repeats the original sentence, which is wordy.
(B) uses the present tense verb "has been contemplating," which is not consistent with the fact that the artist was contemplating his masterpiece in the past.
(C) uses the past perfect tense verb "had contemplated," which is also not consistent with the fact that the artist was contemplating his masterpiece in the past.
(D) uses the past perfect tense verb "had been contemplating" and the present tense verb "has been working," which is inconsistent.

The answer is E

A. contemplated about his latest masterpiece, which he had been working on since the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.

(Correct. Two past events are being described here. The event in further past has been correctly represented by the use of past perfect tense, and the event in near past has been correctly represented by the use of simple past tense. Verb-ing modifier correctly describes the artist's contemplation with cause-effect relationship.)
B. has been contemplating his latest masterpiece, which he had been working on since the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.
(has been contemplating indicates that the artist is still contemplating continuously and there is no proper time marker from when he is contemplating.)
C. had contemplated his latest masterpiece, which he had been working on since the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.
(By using two past perfect tense we can't determine the timeline of events.)
D. had been contemplating his latest masterpiece, which he has been working on since the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.
(The first event comes ahead in timeline of events and hence can't be described with the use of past perfect tense.)
E. had been contemplating his latest masterpiece, which he had been working on for the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.
(By using two past perfect tense we can't determine the timeline of events.)

A. contemplated about his latest masterpiece, which he had been working on since the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.
contemplate about is some time in the past. had been working on since the first six months say the activity has been happening in the distant past before he contemplated. hoping to perfect takes verb of contemplate so it means artist was thinking to perfect it before art exhibition in past
so overall this options looks correct.

B. has been contemplating his latest masterpiece, which he had been working on since the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.
has been contemplating means this contemplation happened in the past and is continuing in present....had been working does not look correct as if it means to say it happened before a particular time but there is no mention of such. Hence incorrect

C. had contemplated his latest masterpiece, which he had been working on since the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.
Usage of past perfect had contemplated mean a certain point in the past

D. had been contemplating his latest masterpiece, which he has been working on since the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.
Usage of past perfect continuous means this activity was happening in the past

E. had been contemplating his latest masterpiece, which he had been working on for the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.
Usage of past perfect continuous in both the places looks incorrect.

A is the answer

We should use present continuous tense with since.

A. contemplated about his latest masterpiece, which he had been working on since the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.

Incorrect. We should use present continuous tense with since.

B. has been contemplating his latest masterpiece, which he had been working on since the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.

Incorrect. We should use present continuous tense with since.

C. had contemplated his latest masterpiece, which he had been working on since the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.

Incorrect. We should use present continuous tense with since.

D. had been contemplating his latest masterpiece, which he has been working on since the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.

Past perfect continuous tense the continuous nature of a past action in the past before another action. We don't have anything in here (so not sure if the sentence is correct). The use of present continuous tense with since is correct. The option is better than the other 4.

E. had been contemplating his latest masterpiece, which he had been working on for the last six months, hoping to perfect it before the art exhibition.

The use of two past continuous tense without a time reference is incorrect.
